The aim is not simply to finish once; it is to make the next attempt easier and more independent.
Why patient, practical support matters
Digital skills and confidence vary from person to person; age alone does not explain someone’s experience. In its 2025/2026 survey, the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology reported that 95% of adults had used the internet in the previous three months. The figure was 78% for people aged 75–84 and 46% for those aged 85 and over. These are UK self-reported results, and broad age bands do not describe every individual.
The same survey found that 76% of UK adults felt able to complete most digital tasks without difficulty, compared with 13% of people aged 85 and over. It also found that 56% of adults said they had improved their digital or online skills in the previous 12 months; 37% reported self-teaching and 23% learning from family and friends. These figures describe different measures and should not be read as evidence that every older person needs help. UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, 2026 survey.
In a separate UK study of informal and proxy digital support, supporters said people they helped faced barriers including lack of digital skills (55%), low confidence (53%) and fear of making a mistake (47%). The report also identifies literacy, language, health conditions, unfamiliar terminology and interface design as possible factors. These are reported challenges among people receiving support, not traits of older adults as a group. UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, 2026 report.

How to teach a smartphone task without taking over
- Ask what they want to do. Choose their goal—perhaps sending a photo, joining a video call or adjusting a setting—rather than deciding what they ought to learn.
- Make the task relevant. Use their own device and a situation they recognize. Explain unfamiliar words in plain language and check whether the screen is comfortable to see and use.
- Let them control the phone. Sit where both of you can see the screen, then describe one action at a time. Pause so they can find and tap the control themselves.
- Invite them to try again. After showing a step, let them repeat it. If they get stuck, give a clue or demonstrate that step again instead of completing the whole task for them.
- Make questions and mistakes ordinary. Leave time for questions and avoid suggesting that a mistake has caused harm before checking what happened. If a screen or process is confusing, treat that as a possible design problem, not a personal failing.
- End with a useful reminder. Let them explain or demonstrate the steps in their own words. If they want, write a short, private note using the labels they see on the screen; do not include passwords or sensitive details.
This is an evidence-informed approach, not a teaching formula tested as a package. It follows the distinction between teaching someone through a task and doing it for them, and the learner-paced, real-life scenario approach described by TechBridge. EPALE’s TechBridge account, 19 March 2026.
When to guide and when to do a task for someone
The UK informal-support report distinguishes teaching support, in which a helper guides someone through a task, from proxy support, in which the helper does it on the person’s behalf. Teaching can build independence, but it takes time and emotional effort and is used mainly for simple, repeatable tasks. Proxy help can resolve an urgent or complex problem sooner, but relying on one person to act can make future access fragile.

| Situation | More suitable kind of help | What the helper should do |
|---|---|---|
| A low-stakes task the learner wants to repeat | Guided practice | Break it into steps, let the learner operate the device and allow time to practise. |
| A complex, urgent or high-stakes task | Careful assistance may be needed | Agree on what help is wanted. Where a service allows it, use its official permissions or account-recovery process rather than informal credential sharing. |
| A task that repeatedly causes difficulty | Change the support or route | Check whether the barrier is the instructions, interface, accessibility, language or the service’s process—not only the person’s familiarity with technology. |
Do not ask for or keep another person’s password. If they want you to act for them, look for the service’s official delegated-access, representative or recovery options. If none is available, help them contact the provider through an official channel while they remain in control of their account.
Make the learning setup accessible and sustainable
A useful session depends on more than patience. The learner may need larger text, a quieter setting, more time, a different explanation or a break. Health, language and literacy needs can affect how a task feels, while confusing interface design can make it harder for anyone to follow instructions. Ask what would make the next step easier instead of assuming.

Supporters have constraints too. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner describes mentor-side challenges such as time, patience, confidence and practical logistics including transport. Its account cites a 2017 Australian Youth Digital Participation Survey in which 59% of people aged 8–17 said they had shown an older family member how to use technology; among teenagers, the figure was 75%. Those historical Australian findings should not be treated as current UK figures. eSafety Commissioner: older Australians and digital technology.
If family help is becoming difficult to arrange, a community or structured learning setting may offer a more reliable pace and routine. UNESCO’s 2025 report draws on case studies in Bahrain, Chile, China, Poland, South Africa and the United States, emphasizing that accessible learning environments, teaching approaches and policy shape participation alongside individual motivation. What intergenerational programs can—and cannot—show
There is promising, but limited, evidence that learning across generations can benefit both sides. A 2018 peer-reviewed study of Cyber-Seniors used pre- and post-program data from 29 older participants (mean age 73.45) who completed at least three sessions and 28 young volunteers (mean age 21.81). It reported increased social engagement among older participants, improved attitudes toward older people among volunteers, and a significant increase in older participants’ attitudes about their own technology use, with a medium effect size. The small participant sample does not establish that every program will have the same results. Yuen et al., Innovation in Aging, 2018.
EPALE’s March 2026 account describes TechBridge as pairing adults aged 50 and over with coaches aged 18–30, using real-life scenarios and learner-controlled pace. It lists a modular curriculum, trainer handbook and assessment toolkit as digital resources, and gives the project end date as February 2026. That account describes a model; it is not independent evidence of long-term outcomes, and resource availability may change. EPALE’s TechBridge account.
