Three launches define the holiday hardware race
The three products target different budgets and use cases. Microsoft is promoting a premium Windows laptop built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform. Amazon is expanding its Alexa line with tablets, including a higher-end model that costs substantially more than its predecessor. Apple is introducing HomeView, a small display intended to become a control and information center in the home.

Microsoft and Nvidia RTX Spark Windows laptop
The laptop starts at $2,599. Its central pitch is local computing: Microsoft says the RTX Spark hardware can run demanding AI workloads without relying on a cloud service for every request. That could appeal to professionals, developers and privacy-conscious users who need predictable access to models or want to avoid sending sensitive prompts and files to remote servers.

The price also makes it the least accessible of the three launches. Exact original-equipment manufacturers, configurations and retail availability were not specified in the report, so the starting price should not be treated as the cost of every model.
Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro
The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is reported at $550, compared with $155 for the Fire HD10 predecessor. Amazon also announced two other Alexa-branded tablets. The premium model adds an “Ask Alexa” button and a hands-free On-Screen Intelligence mode that can inspect what is displayed and take actions. One example is turning information from a cooking video into a shopping list.

Apple HomeView
HomeView costs $299 and has a 7-inch display designed for wall mounting or tabletop use. Apple says it combines Siri with Apple Intelligence to proactively surface messages, calendar appointments and photos. Facial recognition is described as part of the personalization system, allowing the display to tailor what it shows to people in the household.

HomeView uses Apple’s A18 chip. The CNBC report described that processor as the fastest smartphone chip when it was introduced in September 2024; that is historical launch context, not a current independent performance ranking. The report also does not specify which HomeView AI tasks run without a network connection.
What the devices actually do with AI
“AI gadget” covers very different experiences here. RTX Spark is aimed at computation: generating or analyzing content on the laptop itself. Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is aimed at an assistant that can understand the screen and carry out practical tasks. HomeView is aimed at ambient assistance, presenting information before a user explicitly asks.

For readers specifically asking whether these products can run AI without the cloud, the evidence is uneven. Microsoft explicitly markets local execution for RTX Spark. Apple and Amazon describe AI capabilities, but the report does not provide an offline feature list or a task-by-task split between on-device and server processing. Buyers should not assume that every assistant function works without an internet connection.

The real cost includes subscriptions and ecosystem ties
Amazon’s redesigned Alexa is reported to require a $19.99 monthly subscription or a Prime membership. That changes the tablet calculation: a $550 purchase can become an ongoing service commitment, particularly for someone who is not already a Prime member.

Apple’s secure-video recording requires an upgraded iCloud plan. HomeView therefore works best for households already invested in Apple accounts and services, while the device’s long-term cost depends on which storage and security features a household chooses.
RTX Spark has no subscription price stated in the report. Its ownership cost is more likely to come from the initial hardware purchase, software requirements and eventual replacement of a high-end laptop. Local processing can reduce dependence on recurring cloud fees, but it does not make a $2,599 computer inexpensive.
Why analysts expect a slow start
IDC analyst Jitesh Ubrani said the immediate objective is not necessarily a mass-market sales surge: “This is really about getting devices into consumers’ hands, into consumers’ homes, slowly teaching them how to use it, and getting feedback from them.” That frames the 2026 holiday season as a field test in onboarding and behavior change.

Forrester analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee sees a gap between curiosity and purchasing intent: “I think consumers are interested in what AI can do.” He added, “What’s less clear is whether they are interested in buying hardware specifically because it is an AI device.” In other words, a useful feature may help sell a tablet or display, but the AI label alone may not justify replacing an existing product.

Creative Strategies analyst Carolina Milanesi made the price sensitivity explicit: “Consumers out there are, I think, yet to be convinced that on-device matters as much, especially when you ask them to spend more for a device.” That concern applies most directly to RTX Spark and the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, where the AI proposition is tied to a substantial premium.
There is also an ownership argument. Jeff Morgan, CEO of Ollama, said, “I think there’s something about owning your AI versus renting it.” Local models can offer control and independence, but buyers still need to check model support, update policies and how much storage or memory their preferred workloads require.

The report describes consumer sentiment as its weakest in 12 years, without providing a precise percentage. Inflation, AI-safety concerns and the learning curve for new assistants all add friction. AI-server demand is also raising memory and storage costs, while smartphone and laptop shipments have plunged this year, encouraging people to keep existing devices longer.
A McKinsey survey cited in the report found that nearly half of U.S. consumers expected to spend the same amount or more than in the previous holiday season. That does not mean they will spend on AI hardware. Bain forecast more than $1 trillion in U.S. holiday retail sales, but attributed more than half of nominal growth to inflation; some electronics and appliance categories were expected to remain flat. Bain retail chief Aaron Cheris said discretionary shoppers may delay replacement purchases.

How to decide whether an AI gadget makes sense
Choose RTX Spark when local computing is the requirement
The laptop is the clearest fit for someone who has a specific, demanding AI workload and values running it locally. It is difficult to justify solely as a general-purpose computer when less expensive laptops already handle ordinary productivity, browsing and cloud AI services.
Choose the Alexa tablet when screen-aware assistance solves a daily task
The premium tablet’s strongest demonstrated use case is combining visual content with an action, such as extracting ingredients from a video into a shopping list. Compare that convenience with the $395 gap between its reported price and the $155 Fire HD10 predecessor, then include the possible $19.99 monthly Alexa charge if Prime membership is not already part of the household.
Choose HomeView when the household wants an ambient Apple display
HomeView is designed for people who want messages, schedules and photos visible in a shared space without reaching for a phone. Its value depends on whether that persistent display is genuinely useful and whether the household is comfortable with Apple account, facial-recognition and iCloud integration.
Wait when the feature is curiosity rather than a need
Because immediate sales are expected to be modest and the products are intended to teach consumers how to use new behaviors, waiting is reasonable for buyers who cannot name a task the device will improve. Early adoption may provide feedback that leads to better software, broader compatibility or more practical second-generation hardware.
What to verify before placing a holiday order
- Confirm the current price, configuration and delivery date for the exact model.
- Check whether the advertised AI features are available in your country and language.
- Ask which functions continue to work during an internet outage and which send data to a remote service.
- Calculate subscription and cloud-storage charges over the first year, not just the device price.
- Read the retailer’s return window and restocking terms, especially for a new product category with an unfamiliar learning curve.
The holiday race is therefore less a settled victory for AI hardware than a high-profile experiment. Microsoft is testing whether local performance can justify a workstation-class price, Amazon whether screen-aware Alexa can support a premium tablet and recurring service, and Apple whether a $299 home display can become a daily household habit. Their results will depend on usefulness after the novelty fades, not on launch-week excitement alone.
