Tech Companies and Startups in Irvine in 2026: What the Local Scene Actually Includes

Irvine has a broad technology economy rather than a single dominant specialty. Companies connected with the city work in healthcare innovation, medical devices, data software, cybersecurity, games, e-commerce, fintech, advertising technology, industrial internet of things (IoT), and venture building. A 2026 Built In LA roundup identifies a useful set of local companies, but it is an editorial selection—not a verified directory of Irvine-headquartered employers. Some firms have an Irvine office or regional hub instead of their corporate headquarters.

The clearest way to read the list is to separate what each company does from how it relates to Irvine. The sections below explain both, then add the city’s employment and investment context from the City of Irvine’s 2024 Innovation Economy Report.

What “in Irvine” means in this list

The phrase can describe several arrangements: a company headquartered in Irvine, an Irvine-based operating company, a satellite office, a research site, or a regional hub. The Built In LA article does not establish the same relationship for every company it names. For example, it explicitly says Better is headquartered in New York City and maintains a West Coast hub in Irvine. That makes Better relevant to Irvine’s technology ecosystem without making it an Irvine-headquartered company.

The roundup also contains two lists that do not match exactly. Its introductory “Top Companies” list names Viant, iHerb, Better.com, Cloudvirga, Acorns, Blizzard Entertainment, Weedmaps, CrowdStrike, and Alteryx. The body presents profiles for 12 companies, adding Cie, Bonfire Studios, Lantronix, Kantata, and MFour Data Research while not treating every introductory name as a separate profile. The 12 profiles below are therefore best understood as the article’s featured selection, not a definitive census.

The 12 companies featured in the 2026 selection

This table gives the practical comparison first. “Irvine connection” uses only the location description available in the cited roundup; it does not infer headquarters where the source is silent.

Cie

Built In LA describes Cie as an Irvine-based venture studio and innovation accelerator. Its role is different from that of a conventional software vendor: it helps create, test or accelerate businesses and products. That makes it relevant to founders, startup operators and people looking for venture-building work as well as to traditional engineering candidates.

Alteryx

Alteryx is presented as a self-service data-analytics company built around repeatable analytical workflows. The model is aimed at organizations that need analysts and business teams to prepare, combine and analyze data without making every task a custom engineering project. The roundup’s “recent IPO” wording should not be treated as a current status statement; corporate status and local operations can change.

Bonfire Studios

Bonfire Studios is described as an independent multiplayer-game developer. The roundup references its title Arkheron, placing the company in Irvine’s creative-technology and game-development cluster. Multiplayer studios typically combine game design, engineering, art, user research, online infrastructure and live-service operations, so the opportunity set is broader than game programming alone.

CrowdStrike

CrowdStrike’s Falcon platform is characterized in the roundup as cloud-delivered endpoint protection paired with threat intelligence. In practical terms, that means security software monitors computers and other endpoints, sends telemetry to cloud services and uses that data to identify threats. Irvine’s connection should be confirmed from current company information before assuming a particular office, team or hiring program remains active.

iHerb

iHerb operates an e-commerce business focused on supplements, personal care and wellness products. Its technology work can include retail platforms, search and recommendation systems, payments, fulfillment software, data engineering and customer-service tools. The company belongs in an Irvine technology overview because digital commerce is an enabling technology sector as well as a retail category.

Blizzard Entertainment

Blizzard Entertainment is associated with World of Warcraft, Diablo, StarCraft, Overwatch and Hearthstone. Those franchises require large production teams, online services, community management and anti-abuse systems. The presence of a major game publisher also helps explain why Irvine’s technology economy includes creative and interactive media alongside enterprise software.

Better

Better provides home-buying and fintech services. The key geographic qualification is explicit: its headquarters are in New York City, while Irvine serves as a West Coast hub. Readers researching Irvine employers should therefore distinguish the company’s local jobs and operations from its corporate headquarters. Financial products, eligibility rules and availability can change, so prospective customers should confirm details directly with the company.

Lantronix

Lantronix works in IoT and edge computing, with products described as gateways, embedded modules and the Percepxion platform. These technologies connect equipment, collect data near where it is generated and move selected information to cloud or enterprise systems. The company represents the hardware/software combination that is often missing from lists focused only on consumer apps and web platforms.

Kantata

Kantata sells cloud-based project and resource-management software for professional-services firms. The business was formerly known as Mavenlink. Its tools address staffing, utilization, project planning, time and financial visibility—problems that differ from consumer productivity apps because they tie work allocation to client delivery and revenue.

MFour Data Research

MFour Data Research is described as a consumer-research and insights company using an opt-in panel. It can help organizations gather opinions and behavioral information for product, advertising and market decisions. Any panel-size or reach figures should be treated as source-reported rather than independently confirmed, and readers should check current methodology and privacy terms before relying on a particular study.

Acorns

Acorns is presented as a personal-finance app that automates investing through round-ups. The basic idea is to direct small amounts associated with purchases into an investment account, subject to the product’s current rules, fees, disclosures and availability. Because financial features and state availability can change, confirm all account terms with Acorns before opening or recommending an account.

Viant Technology

Viant Technology is an advertising-technology company offering an AI-powered demand-side platform. A demand-side platform lets advertisers and agencies plan, buy and optimize digital media across publishers and exchanges. Its inclusion shows that Irvine’s technology base extends into the infrastructure behind online advertising, not just consumer-facing websites.

How Irvine’s technology economy is organized

The City of Irvine’s August 2024 Innovation Economy Report groups the local economy into three broad innovation industries. The employment and wage figures below refer to 2023 Q4, not to headcounts at the 12 featured companies.

Innovation industry Jobs (2023 Q4) Average annual wage Employment growth, 2003–2023
Healthcare Innovation 21,220 $62,635 347%
Medical Technologies 19,424 $115,711 56%
Enabling and Creative Technologies 22,330 $152,664 34%

The report defines these as sector-level estimates compiled from JobsEQ 2023 Q4 data and the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages. They include many employers beyond the companies in the Built In LA selection. The especially rapid long-term expansion of Healthcare Innovation helps explain why an Irvine technology list should include biomedical and health-related activity even when individual companies are not consumer software brands.

Investment and the UCI Research Park connection

Irvine’s innovation story predates the current startup cycle. The City report says the UCI Research Park was founded in the 1990s to attract biomedical and high-tech firms. By 2004 it contained 2.4 million square feet of research space and 30 corporations, startups and UCI-affiliated offices. That physical and institutional base helps connect university research, medical technology, venture capital and commercial product development.

The same report records $4.6 billion in Irvine venture-capital funding in 2020. Healthcare Innovation funding peaked at $2.4 billion and Medical Technologies at $1.2 billion in 2022. Enabling and Creative Technologies funding peaked at $1 billion in 2019 and stood at $0.7 billion in 2023. The series covers Crunchbase rounds from 2003 through 2023, so the figures describe disclosed venture rounds rather than every form of company financing.

Other Irvine names that appear in dated business lists

Separate rosters broaden the candidate pool but should not be merged silently into the 2026 selection. An Orange County Business Journal software-company list dated September 1, 2025 includes Irvine entries such as Kajabi, MobilityWare and Microsoft. A January 20, 2025 chipmaker list identifies Skyworks Solutions as headquartered in Irvine. These lists are useful leads for further checking, not proof that every company still has the same headquarters, office footprint or hiring status in 2026.

How to compare Irvine companies for a job or business decision

If you want software and data work

Start with Alteryx, Kantata, MFour Data Research and Viant Technology. Their products differ—analytics workflows, professional-services management, consumer research and advertising infrastructure—so compare the customer problem and technical stack rather than treating all four as generic software companies.

If you want hardware, security or connected-device work

Lantronix represents embedded and edge systems, while CrowdStrike represents cloud security. The roles, certifications and development environments can be very different. Ask whether a position centers on firmware, networking, cloud services, detection engineering, data science or customer deployment.

If you want games and creative technology

Bonfire Studios and Blizzard Entertainment are the clearest matches. Compare studio size, project stage, multiplayer responsibilities and the difference between creating a new title and supporting an established franchise. Production, art, community and quality-assurance roles can be as important as programming.

If you want consumer products or fintech

iHerb, Better and Acorns all serve consumers but operate in different regulatory and operational environments. E-commerce emphasizes merchandising and fulfillment; home finance involves lending and compliance; investing apps involve financial disclosures and account servicing. Confirm the Irvine relationship and current product availability before making a location or career assumption.

If you want startup formation

Cie is the most direct fit because its stated role is venture creation and acceleration. It may be a better starting point for someone who wants exposure to multiple ideas and early-stage experiments than for someone seeking one mature product line.

How to verify a company’s current Irvine presence

  1. Check the company’s current contact, office or careers page and record the exact Irvine address or region, if one is provided.
  2. Distinguish “headquarters,” “office,” “hub,” “campus” and “remote hiring” rather than treating them as synonyms.
  3. Confirm that the product description and ownership are current; mergers, rebrands and discontinued services can make older summaries misleading.
  4. For regulated financial products, review current disclosures, fees, eligibility and state availability.
  5. For job research, check the date on each posting and whether the role is assigned to Irvine, another city or a remote workforce.

This verification step matters because the Built In LA roundup was published August 19, 2026, while the city’s employment and funding data are historical series ending in 2023. Together they provide a useful map of Irvine’s technology ecosystem, not a guarantee that every detail remains unchanged.
