TCS Says AI Will Eventually Outgrow Traditional-Service Declines, but Gives No Timeline

TCS expects AI services revenue to grow enough to eventually more than offset declines in some traditional services—but CEO K. Krithivasan has not predicted when that will happen. The claim is a management outlook, not evidence that AI has already produced net incremental revenue after displaced work and productivity savings passed to clients are accounted for.

What TCS means by AI growth alongside traditional-service declines

On its April 9, 2026 Q4 FY26 earnings call, an analyst asked whether AI might follow the digital-services cycle: productivity gains are passed to clients, traditional service revenue falls, and newer technology revenue eventually compensates. Krithivasan agreed with the structure of that analogy, but not with any implied timetable.

“Structurally what you are saying is correct, however, I don’t know whether it will be the same time period in which the whole thing will change.”

He said TCS would expect AI revenue to rise while some traditional revenue “slowly taper[s] down,” with AI eventually overcompensating for reductions elsewhere. He also said he could not predict how the different cycles would move. That makes the headline a forecast about the direction of the business, not a claim that cannibalization has stopped or that the offset is already complete. (TCS Q4 FY26 earnings-call transcript)

Where TCS sees AI-related work coming from

COO Aarthi Subramanian grouped the opportunity into three kinds of client work. They help explain why an AI strategy can involve both existing technology services and newer transformation projects.

Enterprise transformation

Clients continue to modernize their technology environments, including cloud, data, cybersecurity and enterprise systems. This is broader transformation work that can provide a setting for AI adoption; it is not necessarily revenue from a standalone AI product.

AI-assisted modernization

TCS also sees scope to use AI in modernization and to reduce technology debt. If AI makes parts of delivery more productive, the commercial effect depends on how the work is priced and how savings are shared. The cited call does not quantify how much such productivity might reduce traditional-service revenue.

Direct AI-led business transformation

The third category is transformation using AI to change industry value chains and produce direct business impact. This is the clearest category of new AI-focused demand in Subramanian’s description, but the call did not put a revenue figure or timetable on it. (TCS Q4 FY26 earnings-call transcript)

What the latest reported numbers do—and do not—show

TCS’s July 9, 2026 Q1 FY27 results release reported an AI revenue run rate of US$2.6 billion on an annualized basis, up 13.6% sequentially. The company separately reported quarterly revenue of US$7.624 billion, up 2.7% year over year in US dollars, and total contract value of US$9.5 billion. These measures describe different things and should not be added together or treated as interchangeable.

Measure What TCS reported How to read it
AI revenue run rate US$2.6 billion annualized; up 13.6% quarter on quarter An annualized rate, not AI revenue recognized during the quarter.
Total quarterly revenue US$7.624 billion; up 2.7% year on year in US dollars Revenue for Q1 FY27 across the business, not an AI-only figure.
Total contract value US$9.5 billion Contract value reported for the quarter; it is not revenue recognized in that period.

The run rate indicates the scale TCS assigns to its AI business, but it does not by itself reveal how much revenue was newly created, how much replaced other work, or how much productivity benefit was passed to clients. The company’s release does not provide a quantified bridge separating those effects. (TCS Q1 FY27 results release)

Deals and client adoption show demand, not the net revenue offset

TCS said Q1 FY27 included an US$800 million AI-led transformation mega-deal with SKF, as well as multi-million-dollar agreements with ServiceNow and a Europe-based Fortune Global 50 company. The company also reported a strong order book. These announcements are evidence of contracted demand, but deal value is not the same as revenue recognized in the quarter or profit earned from the work. (TCS Q1 FY27 results release)

In its FY26 CEO letter, TCS said 130 of its 139 largest clients—those with more than US$50 million in annual revenue—had chosen TCS as their AI services partner. That is a company-reported measure of client adoption, not a measure of AI’s net contribution to revenue. The letter also describes TCS’s full-stack AI strategy, internal adoption and workforce skills as context for its approach; those company-reported measures do not establish the financial offset independently. Can AI revenue eventually make up for traditional work that tapers?

According to Krithivasan, that is the expected direction: AI revenue should grow, some traditional service revenue may taper, and AI could eventually more than compensate. But TCS has not supplied a quantified forecast for when that crossover might occur or how large either side of the equation will be.

The available company materials also do not isolate AI’s net revenue contribution after traditional work displaced, pricing changes and productivity savings passed to clients are considered. The US$2.6 billion annualized run rate, announced contracts and client-partner statistic therefore support the view that TCS sees and is winning AI-related business; they do not prove that AI has already offset cannibalization across the company.
