Its headline features include a native 144Hz panel, Google TV, support for four HDR formats and four HDMI 2.1 inputs reported by reviewers. TCL advertises up to 4,000+ local dimming zones and 6,000 peak nits, but those are maximum manufacturer claims—not measured guarantees for every screen size. Independent reviews covered 65- and 75-inch samples, so their findings should not be treated as separate tests of all four models.
What is the TCL QM8L?
The QM8L is TCL’s 2026 premium SQD-Mini LED 4K television range. The US models are 65QM8L, 75QM8L, 85QM8L and 98QM8L. It is distinct from the prior-year QM8K and the lower-tier QM7L. TCL’s North American announcement said the QM8L models were available in 2026. TCL’s announcement

The series is positioned around a high-refresh-rate picture, local dimming, broad HDR support and Google TV. The strongest claims about brightness and dimming are TCL’s own maximum specifications; independent reviewer observations add useful context, but they do not amount to testing of every size.

What the specifications say
TCL’s specification sheet lists a WHVA 2.0 Ultra panel with 4K UHD resolution (3840 × 2160), Super Quantum Dots and full-array local dimming. The native refresh rate is listed as 144Hz; TCL also names Game Accelerator 288, Filmmaker Mode and IMAX Enhanced. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent test results. Brightness and local dimming claims
TCL advertises “up to 4000+” discrete dimming zones and “up to 6000” peak nits. “Up to” matters: these are maximum claims and should not be read as a measured result for every size, scene or viewing condition. The available independent coverage does not establish a size-by-size measurement comparison.

HDR, smart TV and audio
The sheet lists Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG, with Google TV as the smart TV platform. It also lists Wi-Fi 6, hands-free voice control and a backlit voice remote. TCL describes the audio as by Bang & Olufsen and lists an upgradable audio system with an optional wireless subwoofer, along with optional Dolby Atmos FlexConnect speakers. Verify the feature set for the exact regional model before relying on market-specific implementation or availability.
Gaming connections
Independent reviewers report four HDMI 2.1 inputs. Tom’s Guide reports 4K/144Hz support, eARC on HDMI port 1 and a VRR range of 48–288Hz for its 75-inch review sample. TechRadar also lists ATSC 3.0 in the specifications for its reviewed model; tuner features should not be assumed identical across regions. Tom’s Guide’s 75-inch review and TechRadar’s review
What independent reviews found
The available independent assessments cover two sample sizes. RTINGS says it bought and tested a 65-inch QM8L and that its results also apply to the 75-, 85- and 98-inch models. That is RTINGS’ stated scope, not evidence of four separately tested sizes. TechRadar and Tom’s Guide reviewed 75-inch samples. RTINGS’ QM8L review

Brightness, contrast and picture
Tom’s Guide describes its 75-inch sample as strong in bright rooms, with deep blacks that retain fine detail and favorable dynamic range. Those are that publication’s review conclusions, not measurements or hands-on findings for every size.
TechRadar discusses its own viewing observations around blooming and color. It also reports that its measurements did not reach TCL’s claimed 100% BT.2020 or DCI-P3 coverage. TCL’s color-coverage claim and a reviewer’s measured result are different kinds of evidence; the available information does not provide a precise measured percentage to quote.
How to read the review evidence
- RTINGS’ coverage is based on a purchased 65-inch sample; its stated applicability to other sizes is the reviewer’s assessment.
- TechRadar and Tom’s Guide describe 75-inch review samples, so attribute subjective picture-quality conclusions to those publications.
- Do not treat TCL’s maximum brightness, dimming-zone or color-coverage claims as independently verified results for every diagonal.
Choosing a size and planning installation
Screen size is not a performance ranking: the evidence available here does not establish that one QM8L size performs better than another. Choose based on room fit and viewing distance, budget, installation constraints, and whether the reviewed size is a useful proxy for the model you intend to buy.

TCL’s sheet lists these VESA patterns and television weights without the stand. Check that a mount supports the exact pattern and weight, and confirm its load rating, wall construction and installation requirements.
| Model | VESA pattern | Weight without stand |
|---|---|---|
| 65QM8L | 300 × 300 mm | 46.5 lb |
| 75QM8L | 400 × 400 mm | 62.6 lb |
| 85QM8L | 600 × 500 mm | 85.8 lb |
| 98QM8L | 600 × 500 mm | 121.3 lb |
The 98-inch set’s listed weight makes delivery, access through doors and stairways, and installation especially important to plan in advance.

The QM8L’s documented feature set makes it a compelling candidate for buyers seeking a large 4K TV with a 144Hz native panel, multiple HDR formats, Google TV and reviewer-reported four-port HDMI 2.1 connectivity. Whether it is a good buy depends on the price available for the exact model and on how much weight you place on review findings from 65- and 75-inch samples. Treat TCL’s headline brightness and zone counts as maximum claims, and compare the current price with the launch MSRP rather than assuming an observed discount will remain available.
