TCL QM7L vs QM7: What Changed Between the 2024 and 2026 Generations?

Short answer: the TCL QM7L is a 2026 television, while the QM7 most buyers mean is the 2024 QM751G family. They are not adjacent generations: TCL introduced the QM7K for 2025 between them. The QM7L brings a newer SQD-Mini LED system, TCL’s Deep Color System, higher advertised dimming-zone and brightness ceilings, updated halo-control hardware, a different processor and newer Google TV software. Those improvements do not make it automatically better for every buyer. Screen size, current price, gaming motion, room brightness, HDR preferences and HDMI requirements still matter.

This guide separates TCL’s published claims from independent review findings so you can decide whether a 2026 QM7L is worth choosing over a remaining 2024 QM7 or an intervening 2025 QM7K.

The model-year timeline: QM7, QM7K and QM7L

TCL’s naming makes the comparison easy to misread. The original QM7 family launched for 2024 as the QM751G series. TCL then released the QM7K for 2025 and the QM7L for 2026. Therefore, a QM7L-versus-QM7 decision compares products separated by an intervening generation, not a simple one-year replacement.

Series Model year Sizes listed by TCL What it represents
QM7 (QM751G) 2024 55, 65, 75, 85 and 98 inches Original QM7 generation
QM7K 2025 Not established in the cited launch material Intermediate generation; TCL’s direct comparison reference for QM7L
QM7L 2026 55, 65, 75, 85 and 98 inches Current generation discussed here

TCL’s official QM7L comparison page compares the 2025 QM7K directly with the 2026 QM7L. Its descriptions of changed components are consequently QM7K-to-QM7L claims. They should not be presented as laboratory measurements of the 2024 QM7 against the 2026 QM7L. For the older QM7, TCL’s 2024 launch material supplies the relevant specifications and historical pricing.

Every “up to” figure in TCL’s specifications is a series-level ceiling or marketing claim. Actual brightness, zone count and behavior can vary by screen size and picture mode.

Display technology and color: what SQD-Mini LED changes

From QD-Mini LED to SQD-Mini LED

The 2024 QM7 uses TCL’s QD-Mini LED approach, described in the launch announcement as High-Zone QD Mini LED. The QM7L moves to SQD-Mini LED and adds the Deep Color System. TCL positions this as a color-purity and light-control upgrade rather than a change in resolution: both families are 4K televisions.

TCL’s direct QM7K-versus-QM7L comparison identifies two specific color-system additions in the newer set: a 5 nm UltraColor Filter and an Advanced Color Purity Algorithm. These components are intended to separate and control primary colors more cleanly. TCL does not publish an independent color-volume measurement in the cited material, so the practical gain should be treated as a manufacturer-described design change, not a guaranteed percentage improvement.

Brightness and contrast hardware

The 2024 QM7 launch materials advertise peak brightness of up to 2,400 nits and up to 1,500+ local-dimming zones. TCL’s current QM7L specifications raise the published ceilings to up to 3,000 peak nits and up to 2,100+ discrete dimming zones. More zones can reduce blooming around subtitles and bright objects because the backlight can be divided into smaller independently controlled areas.

Those numbers are not directly comparable as a promise that every QM7L size is 600 nits brighter or has 600 more zones. TCL’s figures are maxima for a series, and the panel, optical system and firmware can differ by size. The same qualification applies to zone counts: a 55-inch television cannot be assumed to use the same array as a 98-inch television.

What independent testing says about QM7L zones

RTINGS’ QM7L review lists the following dimming-zone counts by size: 800 for 55 inches, 1,152 for 65 inches, 1,352 for 75 inches, 1,624 for 85 inches and 2,176 for 98 inches. The reviewed television was a 65-inch sample. These are reviewer-published counts, not TCL’s series-level specification, and they show why size must be included in any comparison.

RTINGS describes the QM7L as bright and colorful. It also reports HDR overbrightening, meaning some highlights can appear stronger than the creator intended. A higher peak-brightness ceiling therefore does not automatically produce more accurate HDR; picture-mode tuning and personal preference still matter.

Processing and halo control

TSR AI Processor versus AiPQ Pro

TCL says the QM7L replaces the QM7K’s AiPQ Pro processor with a TSR AI Processor. The company presents this as part of the newer image-processing architecture. For the 2024 QM7, TCL’s launch description names AiPQ Pro processing. Because TCL’s explicit processor comparison is written for QM7K versus QM7L, it is safest to describe TSR as a newer platform rather than claim a measured QM7-to-QM7L processing advantage.

26-bit versus 23-bit halo control

The QM7L comparison page specifies 26-bit Enhanced Halo Control, replacing 23-bit control in the QM7K. More control levels can help the television manage transitions between bright objects and dark backgrounds, especially in subtitles, star fields and high-contrast game scenes. TCL does not provide a standardized blooming score in the cited information, so the bit-depth difference is a hardware description, not a quantified reduction in visible halos.

Gaming, motion and HDMI connectivity

Refresh-rate capability

TCL launched the 2024 QM7 with 4K/144Hz gaming capability. The QM7L is specified with a native 144Hz panel. Both descriptions indicate support for high-frame-rate gaming, but a console or PC must also output a compatible signal, and the game itself must render at that frame rate.

QM7L motion caveat

RTINGS reports blurry motion in Game Master mode on its QM7L sample. Its comparison describes the QM7K as having clearer gaming motion and more restrained HDR. This is important because a newer panel can improve brightness and color while still losing a particular motion-preference test. RTINGS’ comparison is not a controlled test against the 2024 QM7, so it cannot establish that the QM7L is universally blurrier than the original QM7.

Check the HDMI port layout before buying

The QM7L specification page lists HDMI inputs 1 and 2 for 4K at 144Hz, while inputs 3 and 4 are limited to 4K at 60Hz. If you have a gaming PC, a current console and another high-bandwidth source, only two ports provide the television’s top stated mode. You may need to swap cables, use an external HDMI switch, or reserve the 144Hz inputs for the devices that actually require them.

  • Use HDMI 1 or 2 for a 4K/144Hz-capable PC or other high-refresh source.
  • Use HDMI 3 or 4 for 4K/60Hz devices such as many streaming boxes and older consoles.
  • Confirm your cable, graphics output and device settings before diagnosing the television when 144Hz is unavailable.

The supplied QM7 material does not establish an equivalent HDMI-port breakdown, so do not assume the 2024 set has the same arrangement.

Smart-TV software and HDR formats

TCL identifies Google TV 14 with Gemini for the QM7L, replacing Google TV 12 with Assistant in the QM7K. The 2024 QM7 launch summary confirms Google TV but does not specify a software version. The newer interface may therefore offer a more current app platform and voice-assistant integration, but software features can change through updates and regional availability.

For HDR, TCL advertises Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+ and additional HDR formats on the QM7L. Dolby Vision IQ can use the television’s ambient-light information to adapt Dolby Vision scenes, while HDR10+ supplies dynamic metadata when the content carries it. Support for a format does not guarantee that every streaming service or disc uses it; the source and title must also provide compatible HDR data.

Screen sizes, historical pricing and availability

Both the 2024 QM7 and 2026 QM7L families are listed in 55-, 65-, 75-, 85- and 98-inch sizes. A direct size match is essential because zone counts, brightness behavior and viewing distance change with panel dimensions.

TCL’s 2024 launch announcement listed historical manufacturer suggested retail prices from $1,099.99 for the 55-inch QM7 to $6,999.99 for the 98-inch model. Those were launch MSRPs, not current street prices. The available material does not establish reliable 2026 pricing for the QM7L or current clearance pricing for the QM7. Check the exact size, seller, warranty and return policy at the time of purchase rather than treating launch MSRP as today’s value.

Buying situation More sensible starting point Why
You want the newest color, processing and smart-TV platform QM7L It adds SQD-Mini LED, Deep Color System, TSR processing and Google TV 14 with Gemini.
You find a heavily discounted 2024 QM7 in the same size Compare total price and condition The original still offers QD-Mini LED, 4K/144Hz gaming and strong advertised brightness.
Gaming motion is your top priority Compare QM7L and QM7K reviews and return terms RTINGS reports QM7K motion as clearer than QM7L in its comparison; no controlled QM7-versus-QM7L test is established.
You have three or more 4K/144Hz sources Verify ports before purchase QM7L lists only HDMI 1–2 for 4K/144Hz.
You watch HDR in a very bright room Favor the model with the better current price and measured performance QM7L’s advertised ceiling is higher, but independent results and picture-mode behavior matter more than the maximum number alone.

Which television should you choose?

Choose the QM7L when its specific upgrades fit your priorities

  • You want the 2026 model and its current Google TV 14 software.
  • You value TCL’s newer SQD-Mini LED, Deep Color System and 5 nm UltraColor Filter design.
  • You want the higher advertised ceiling of up to 3,000 nits and up to 2,100+ zones, accepting that actual results vary by size.
  • You can connect your high-refresh devices to HDMI 1 or 2.
  • You prefer a vivid, bright HDR presentation and are comfortable adjusting settings if HDR appears overbright.

Choose a discounted QM7 when the price difference is substantial

  • The exact size you need is available with a dependable warranty and return window.
  • You mainly watch movies, shows and 4K/60Hz games rather than requiring every newer processing feature.
  • The savings outweigh the QM7L’s newer color system, software and higher published ceilings.
  • You have confirmed the older set’s ports and features meet your sources, since the supplied QM7 information does not specify its HDMI layout.

Consider the QM7K only as the middle reference

The QM7K matters because it explains the generation sequence and is the model TCL directly compares with QM7L. It may be attractive if priced well, but the cited evidence does not establish current availability or a complete QM7K specification table. Treat any deal as a separate model evaluation rather than assuming it has all QM7L features.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  1. Write down the exact model and size. Confirm whether the listing says QM751G, QM7K or QM7L and whether it is 55, 65, 75, 85 or 98 inches.
  2. Compare the delivered price. Include taxes, delivery, wall-mount hardware, warranty length and the retailer’s return period. Do not use the 2024 launch MSRP as a current quote.
  3. Map your sources to HDMI ports. Reserve QM7L HDMI 1 and 2 for devices that need 4K/144Hz; place 4K/60Hz sources on HDMI 3 and 4.
  4. Check room lighting and seating distance. A brighter set can help in daylight, while a very large panel may expose uniformity or blooming differences more readily.
  5. Plan to adjust HDR and gaming settings. RTINGS’ QM7L findings on HDR overbrightening and Game Master motion mean the default mode may not suit every viewer.
  6. Use the return window for your own sources. Test your console, PC, streaming apps, subtitles and dark-room viewing before the return deadline.

What the numbers do—and do not—prove

The QM7L’s advertised 3,000-nit and 2,100-plus-zone ceilings are higher than the QM7’s 2,400-nit and 1,500-plus-zone launch claims. They establish a newer specification target, not a guaranteed difference visible in every scene or size. RTINGS’ size-specific QM7L counts further demonstrate that the series headline is not the same as the count on each panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, a 144Hz panel does not eliminate motion blur, and a newer processor does not guarantee better upscaling for every source. TCL’s feature descriptions explain what changed in the design; independent testing supplies the practical caveats. The most defensible choice combines both with the exact price and size available to you.

Frequently asked questions

Does every QM7L have more than 2,100 dimming zones?

No. “Up to 2,100+” is TCL’s series-level ceiling. RTINGS lists 800 zones on 55 inches, 1,152 on 65 inches, 1,352 on 75 inches, 1,624 on 85 inches and 2,176 on 98 inches.

Are the QM7L’s 3,000 nits independently measured?

The 3,000-nit figure is TCL’s advertised peak ceiling. The cited RTINGS review evaluates the television’s brightness and HDR behavior but does not turn TCL’s headline into a universal guarantee for every size.
