Choose the Hisense U7SG if your room has persistent window or lamp reflections, or if you need four HDMI 2.1 ports for a gaming PC and multiple consoles. Choose the TCL QM7L if you watch mostly in a darker room and prefer its glossy, punchier-looking color presentation and strong local-dimming blacks. Both are 4K Mini-LED Google TVs with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG, and both accept 4K/120Hz console signals.

This comparison covers the 2026 U.S. Hisense U7SG and TCL QM7L. “U7” is used for several generations and regions, so older U7 reviews may describe different hardware. Compare the same screen size, current price, return policy and warranty before deciding which is the better value.

Identify the exact models before comparing prices

The names are easy to mix up. This article concerns the 2026 U.S. Hisense U7SG and 2026 U.S. TCL QM7L. Hisense has sold U7 televisions in multiple model years and markets, and their panel hardware, ports and processing can differ. A listing that says only “U7” is not enough evidence that it is the U7SG discussed here.

Check the complete model code on the retailer page, carton or television settings menu. Match the suffix before relying on an older review, a specification sheet or a clearance price. The same rule applies to the QM7L: screen size can affect brightness, dimming-zone count, dimensions and weight.

Screen finish: matte U7SG versus glossy QM7L

Why the U7SG is safer in a reflective room

Hisense describes the U7SG’s matte anti-reflective treatment as reducing glare from lamps and windows. In practice, a matte surface diffuses reflections across a wider area instead of showing a sharp mirror-like image. That does not make a bright window disappear, but it can keep reflections from obscuring subtitles, dark scenes and game interfaces.

Prioritize this advantage if the television faces a window, sits opposite a light-colored wall, or is used during the day without blackout curtains. A matte coating can also make seating positions less sensitive to a single light source. The trade-off is that some viewers prefer the extra perceived punch of a glossy panel when the room is controlled.

Where the QM7L’s glossy finish works best

The QM7L uses a glossy screen according to the comparative testing. Gloss can preserve a cleaner-looking image in a dark room because it does not scatter ambient light across the panel. With lights off, its strong local dimming and deep blacks can make films and letterboxed content look especially contrasty.

Gloss becomes a liability when a lamp or window is visible from the seating position. Before buying, sit where you normally watch and look at the blank screen with the room lights on. If you can see a bright fixture in that position, the U7SG’s coating is the lower-risk choice.

Picture quality, HDR and color

Brightness figures need their test conditions

Tom’s Guide measured the U7SG at 2,866.9 nits on a 10% HDR window. That is one reviewer’s measurement using a specific test pattern; it is not a guaranteed brightness level for every scene, size or picture mode. Small highlights such as reflections, sparks and specular details can benefit from that headroom, while full-screen brightness can be lower.

TechRadar reported the QM7L series with up to 3,000 nits peak brightness and up to 2,100 local-dimming zones. Those are series maximums, not specifications confirmed for every diagonal. TCL does not publish a zone count by size in the cited review, so do not assume a 55-inch set has the same hardware as the largest model.

Color and black-level character

The QM7L uses TCL’s Super Quantum Dot technology. TechRadar measured 95% P3 color coverage in its 2026 review. That measurement belongs to the tested television and method, rather than being a promise that every size will measure identically.

TCL 55 Inch QM7L Series SQD-Mini LED QLED 4K Smart Google TV 55QM7L (2026) | 144Hz, Ultimate Color, Ultra Brightness & Contrast, HDR 10, Dolby Vision IQ, Dolby Atmos, Gemini Google AI, Gaming Streaming
  • SQD-Mini LED: As the ultimate Mini LED TV, it integrates the expansive TCL Deep Color System with the breakthrough TCL Halo Control System to ensure the most brilliant, pure, and immersive viewing experience possible.
  • TCL Ultra Color Filter: TCL’s Ultra Color Filter with fine 5 nanometer particles (vs. standard 60 nanometer particles) bring every scene to life with pinpoint, pixel-perfect color accuracy.

  • AIPQ Pro Processor: Harnessing the power of AI to finely control Picture Clarity, Contrast, Color, Motion, Upscaling, and Backlighting, all dynamically, based on the incoming video signal.

A side-by-side comparison characterized the QM7L’s color presentation as punchier, while describing the U7SG as bright and colorful. Those descriptions indicate a viewing preference rather than a laboratory ranking. The QM7L’s local dimming was also described as strong, with deep blacks in a dark room. If you watch films at night and value contrast around subtitles or stars, that behavior may matter more than a headline peak-nit figure.

The U7SG can be the better picture in a bright room even when its raw color is not your personal favorite, because reducing reflections preserves shadow detail and perceived contrast. Conversely, the QM7L can look more impressive in a dark room where its glossy surface and dimming system are not fighting ambient light.

Gaming: ports, refresh rates and motion behavior

Gaming specification Hisense U7SG TCL QM7L What it means
HDMI 2.1 inputs Four Two The U7SG can leave more high-bandwidth devices connected.
Other HDMI inputs Not stated in the comparison Two HDMI 2.0 inputs Older sources can use the lower-bandwidth ports.
Maximum listed PC signal Up to 4K/165Hz Up to 4K/144Hz Relevant to a suitably powerful gaming PC and compatible cable.
Current-console target 4K/120Hz 4K/120Hz Both meet the 120Hz ceiling used by current-generation consoles.
Motion caveat Assess the U7SG’s gaming performance in its own review RTINGS reports slow pixel transitions and noticeable gaming motion blur Refresh rate alone does not determine motion clarity.

When four HDMI 2.1 ports change the decision

Choose the U7SG if you routinely connect a gaming PC, two current consoles, a high-bandwidth receiver or another 4K/120Hz source. Four HDMI 2.1 inputs let those devices remain connected. On the QM7L, only two inputs are HDMI 2.1 in the comparison, so a third high-bandwidth device may require an HDMI switch, receiver routing or cable swapping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For one console and a streaming device, two HDMI 2.1 inputs are usually enough. Do not pay for four ports solely because a specification table looks larger if your equipment does not need them.

Refresh-rate ceilings are not console performance guarantees

The U7SG’s up-to-4K/165Hz and QM7L’s up-to-4K/144Hz figures describe PC input ceilings. They require a graphics card, game and cable capable of delivering those signals. Current consoles target 4K/120Hz, so both televisions support the relevant console mode.

RTINGS reports slow pixel transitions on the QM7L that can create noticeable blur during gaming. That observation is separate from the 144Hz input ceiling: a display can accept a high refresh signal yet show softer motion if pixels do not change quickly enough. Competitive PC players should weigh the observed motion behavior more heavily than the maximum number.

Set up a high-refresh source correctly

  1. Connect the PC or console to an HDMI 2.1 input; on the QM7L, use one of its two HDMI 2.1 ports.
  2. Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for a long or demanding 4K/120Hz connection. Neither television automatically requires a replacement cable if your existing cable is reliable and certified for the signal.
  3. Enable the television’s game or low-latency mode, then select 4K/120Hz, 4K/144Hz or 4K/165Hz in the source settings only when that source supports it.
  4. Confirm the source reports the intended resolution and refresh rate. If the signal drops out, reduce refresh rate first, shorten the cable run or test another HDMI 2.1 input.
  5. Check variable-refresh-rate and HDR options separately; enabling one does not prove the others are active.

HDR formats and smart-TV software

Both models use Google TV. The comparison lists Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG on each set. The available evidence does not establish a decisive difference in app ecosystem or basic HDR-format support.

That parity means picture processing, screen finish, ports and motion are more useful tie-breakers than the format checklist. App availability can still vary by country, account and service update, so verify any niche streaming service you rely on before purchase.

Screen sizes and installation planning

Model Listed sizes
Hisense U7SG 55, 65, 75, 85 and 100 inches
TCL QM7L 55, 65, 75, 85 and 98 inches

The largest option is not identical: U7SG listings reach 100 inches, while QM7L listings reach 98 inches. A two-inch diagonal difference affects width, stand spacing and wall clearance, so measure the installation rather than assuming the sets are interchangeable.

Before ordering a wall mount

  • Confirm the exact diagonal’s VESA pattern and television weight in the manufacturer’s specification sheet.
  • Choose a mount rated above the television’s loaded weight and suitable for your wall construction.
  • Check the wall for studs or use anchors rated for the actual substrate; a mount’s maximum rating does not make every wall safe.
  • Leave room for HDMI plugs, power cables and ventilation. A recessed mount can make the side-facing ports difficult to reach.
  • For a 98- or 100-inch set, measure doorways, stair turns, elevator dimensions and the final viewing distance before delivery.

Price, availability and how to compare value

Television prices change by size, retailer, promotion and stock. Tom’s Guide cited an example of about $898 for a 65-inch QM7L and described the U7SG as somewhat cheaper at the time of its comparison. Those were dated examples, not current prices. Do not use them as a present-day buying target.

Compare like-for-like diagonals on the same day. A cheaper U7SG may be a smaller size, an older U7 generation or a limited return offer. A QM7L discount may apply only to a particular size. Include delivery fees, haul-away charges, return windows, restocking fees and warranty coverage in the calculation.

Choose by room and equipment

Bright living room with windows

Buy the U7SG first, provided the price and size are comparable. Its matte treatment addresses the problem you will see every day. Positioning still matters: avoid placing the screen directly opposite a window, and use blinds when possible.

Dedicated movie room or evening viewing

The QM7L is the stronger alternative when you can control light. Its glossy surface, strong local dimming and reported deep dark-room blacks suit film viewing. If your room later becomes brighter, the U7SG’s reflection control may prove more valuable than the QM7L’s darker-room advantage.

PC gamer with several modern sources

The U7SG is the practical choice because four HDMI 2.1 inputs and a 4K/165Hz ceiling provide more flexibility. Still evaluate motion in the U7SG review and, where possible, use a return window: input capability does not by itself guarantee identical pixel response or processing.

One current console and streaming apps

Either set can work. Both support 4K/120Hz and the same listed HDR formats and Google TV platform. Let screen reflections, sale price, warranty and the preferred screen size decide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Very large screen on a fixed budget

Compare the 98-inch QM7L and 100-inch U7SG only after checking room dimensions and delivery logistics. The larger diagonal can dominate a room, and the cost of a suitable mount or installation may narrow the apparent price difference.

Common buying mistakes and fixes

Mistake: treating every U7 review as a U7SG review

Fix: verify the full model suffix and market. Older U7 televisions may have different coatings, ports, processors and refresh limits.

Mistake: choosing by peak nits alone

Fix: carry the test condition with the number. The 2,866.9-nit U7SG result used a 10% HDR window, while the QM7L’s 3,000-nit figure is a series maximum. Neither number describes every scene or size.

Mistake: assuming a higher refresh rate means clearer motion

Fix: consider pixel response and processing. RTINGS specifically reports noticeable gaming blur from slow QM7L pixel transitions despite its 144Hz ceiling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: buying a glossy screen for a room full of reflections

Fix: inspect the viewing position with lights on. If fixtures or windows appear on the blank panel, favor the matte U7SG or change the room layout.

Mistake: overlooking HDMI allocation

Fix: list every 4K/120Hz or higher-bandwidth device before ordering. Reserve HDMI 2.1 inputs for those sources and use HDMI 2.0 ports for older hardware where appropriate.

Mistake: comparing promotional sticker prices without return terms

Fix: compare the delivered total, return period, restocking rules and warranty for the exact size. A small price advantage is not useful if the set cannot be returned after a panel or motion issue.

Final buying rule

Buy the Hisense U7SG when glare control, four HDMI 2.1 ports or 4K/165Hz PC support solves a real need. Buy the TCL QM7L when you watch in a controlled, darker room and value its glossy presentation, strong local dimming and reported deep blacks. If your use is evenly split, compare the same size at the current delivered price and favor the model whose screen finish matches your room; that choice will affect every viewing session more than a small difference in headline specifications.
