TCL QM6K vs Hisense U7SG: Which Midrange Gaming TV Is Better?

For the better picture, especially in a bright room or in HDR-heavy games, choose the correctly identified Hisense U7SG. RTINGS’ 2026 comparison found it significantly better overall than the TCL QM6K because it gets brighter, produces brighter colors, has slightly stronger contrast, controls local-dimming halos more effectively, and handles glare better. Choose the TCL QM6K when price, Google TV, and flexible high-refresh PC gaming matter more than maximum HDR impact. The most important shopping step is checking the suffix: “Hisense U7” is a family label, while U7SG, U7N, and U7QG are different model-year or regional products.

What the comparison actually covers

The independent head-to-head testing available for this article compares the TCL QM6K with the Hisense U7SG. That is not a universal comparison of every television sold under the U7 name. Hisense U7N and U7QG are other generations or regional variants, so their brightness, refresh-rate support, ports, finish, and processing can differ.

When you shop, copy the complete model code from the product page or box. A listing that says only “Hisense U7” is incomplete. Match the suffix, screen size, and sales region before relying on a review or specification sheet.

Picture quality: where the U7SG pulls ahead

HDR brightness and color volume

RTINGS judged the U7SG significantly better overall, with higher peak brightness and brighter colors. That difference is most visible in games and movies with small, intense highlights: sunlight on metal, explosions, neon signs, or reflections on water. On the U7SG those elements have more headroom before they look muted. In a room with daylight or overhead lighting, the extra brightness also helps the image retain impact.

The QM6K is still a QD-Mini LED 4K television designed for high HDR brightness. TCL lists support for Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, and HLG, so it accepts the major HDR formats named in its specification. The available comparison does not establish a numeric brightness advantage for the TCL; its value is the feature set and gaming bandwidth rather than class-leading luminance.

Contrast and local dimming

Both sets use LCD panels with Mini-LED backlights and local dimming. The U7SG has slightly stronger contrast and more effective local-dimming control in RTINGS’ assessment. Better control means dark areas stay darker while bright objects remain bright, with less visible light leaking around subtitles, star fields, or HUD elements.

TCL describes the QM6K as having up to LD500 precise dimming. “Up to” matters: the maximum zone or dimming specification can depend on screen size, and it does not by itself predict how cleanly a television handles halos. In the independent comparison, the U7SG controlled those halos more effectively than the QM6K.

Reflections and room lighting

The U7SG comparison model has a matte finish. RTINGS found its glare handling better than the QM6K’s, making it the safer choice if a window, lamp, or bright wall sits opposite the screen. Matte coatings can reduce the visibility of direct reflections, although they can also alter the appearance of very bright highlights compared with a conventional glossy surface.

If you watch mostly at night with controllable lighting, the QM6K’s reflection disadvantage is less important. If the television faces an uncovered window or is used for daytime sports and gaming, the U7SG’s advantage is easier to appreciate.

Resolution and panel design

The QM6K is a 4K QD-Mini LED television with a 144Hz native panel refresh. The tested U7SG is a 4K VA LCD Mini-LED television with a 165Hz native refresh, Dolby Vision, and a matte finish. Native refresh rate is the panel’s maximum operating rate; the game, console, graphics card, cable, and selected HDMI mode must all support the desired signal.

Gaming features and limitations

TCL QM6K refresh-rate and VRR support

RTINGS reports that the QM6K accepts 4K at 144Hz and 1080p at 288Hz with VRR on two HDMI 2.1 ports. TCL’s official specification lists a 144Hz panel refresh and VRR up to 144Hz. TCL also lists AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, which is particularly relevant to a compatible PC graphics setup.

Those modes give the QM6K unusual flexibility for its price category. A gaming PC can target 4K high-refresh play when the graphics card and game can sustain it, or use a lower resolution at a much higher refresh rate for competitive titles. Variable refresh rate synchronizes the display’s refresh timing to changing frame rates, reducing tearing when the frame rate is not fixed.

Hisense U7SG refresh-rate context

The U7SG has a higher stated native refresh rate of 165Hz, but the cited comparison does not provide a complete, matching table of every supported resolution, VRR ceiling, or HDMI bandwidth mode. Do not assume that a 165Hz label automatically means 4K at 165Hz through every input. Confirm the exact U7SG regional specification before buying for a particular PC configuration.

HDMI 2.1 ports and cable choice

The QM6K has four HDMI inputs in TCL’s official specification, including two HDMI 2.1 ports according to RTINGS, plus one eARC port. Use the HDMI 2.1 inputs for the highest-bandwidth gaming devices; the remaining inputs may not expose the same refresh modes.

For a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or gaming PC, check the on-screen input information after connecting the device. Enable the input’s enhanced, high-bandwidth, or similar mode if the television provides one, and use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. A cable that works for 4K video at a lower refresh rate is not proof that it will reliably carry every high-refresh VRR mode.

Input lag: what is and is not established

The available sources do not provide a complete, directly comparable input-lag measurement for both televisions. Treat claims that one is definitively faster as unverified here. For a responsive setup, enable the television’s Game or low-latency mode, turn off unnecessary motion processing, and verify that VRR and the intended resolution/refresh combination remain active after those changes.

Console and PC buying guidance

  • PS5 or Xbox Series X: prioritize a confirmed high-bandwidth HDMI input, VRR support, and a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. The QM6K’s two HDMI 2.1 ports are documented; verify the exact U7SG suffix and region before assuming equivalent port behavior.
  • PC at 4K: the QM6K has documented 4K/144Hz support with VRR on HDMI 2.1. The U7SG may be attractive for HDR brightness, but confirm its supported 4K refresh mode for your regional model.
  • Competitive PC play: the QM6K’s reported 1080p/288Hz VRR mode can be useful when high frame rates matter more than 4K detail.
  • HDR-focused single-player games: the U7SG’s higher brightness, brighter colors, and stronger local dimming make it the better picture choice.

Smart-TV software and built-in sound

Google TV on the QM6K

The QM6K runs Google TV. That makes it the straightforward choice if you want Google’s app-centered interface, integrated recommendations, and familiar account ecosystem. TCL also lists Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, and HLG support, allowing compatible content to use those formats.

The cited U7SG comparison identifies Dolby Vision but does not establish the complete smart-TV platform or app support for every region. Confirm the operating system on the exact retailer listing if a particular app, voice assistant, or casting feature is essential.

Audio

TCL specifies an Onkyo 2.1 audio system for the QM6K. That gives the television a defined built-in speaker configuration, but it does not replace a dedicated soundbar or receiver when you want stronger bass, wider imaging, or higher volume. The available U7SG comparison material does not state an equivalent speaker specification, so no fair built-in-audio winner can be established from these sources.

Sizes and US pricing

TCL announced the following US manufacturer’s suggested retail prices for the QM6K on January 6, 2025:

Screen size Announced QM6K US MSRP
50 inches $749.99
55 inches $799.99
65 inches $999.99
75 inches $1,299.99
85 inches $1,999.99
98 inches $3,499.99

A TCL direct listing showed the 55QM6K at $499.99 on October 18, 2026. That is an observed price on that date, not a permanent MSRP; sale pricing can change without notice. The cited material does not provide a matching U7SG price list, so a universal “pay this much more” calculation would be misleading. Compare the exact size, suffix, region, and current retailer price at checkout.

How to choose between them

Choose the Hisense U7SG when picture quality comes first

  • Your room is bright or has difficult reflections.
  • You play HDR-heavy games and want stronger highlight intensity.
  • You value brighter colors and cleaner local-dimming behavior more than Google TV.
  • You have verified that the listing is the U7SG, not a different U7 generation.

Choose the TCL QM6K when value and PC flexibility matter most

  • You want Google TV and TCL’s broad HDR-format support.
  • You need documented 4K/144Hz VRR on a midrange television.
  • You may use 1080p at very high refresh rates for competitive PC games.
  • The current QM6K sale price gives you a meaningfully lower total cost at the size you need.

When the cheaper model is the smarter purchase

A lower price is not a compromise if your room is dim, your games are mostly SDR or moderately bright HDR, and you will use Google TV every day. The QM6K still provides Mini-LED backlighting, 144Hz VRR, four HDMI inputs, and two HDMI 2.1 ports. Paying more for the U7SG makes the most sense when you will actually see its brightness, matte-screen, and local-dimming advantages.

Setup checklist for either television

  1. Verify the identity: photograph the model label and confirm the complete suffix, screen size, and region before opening the box.
  2. Use the right input: connect the console or PC to a documented HDMI 2.1 port; on the QM6K, RTINGS identifies two such ports.
  3. Install the cable: use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for high-bandwidth 4K gaming.
  4. Enable enhanced HDMI mode: select the television’s enhanced, input signal plus, or equivalent setting when required for high refresh and VRR.
  5. Turn on Game mode: this reduces processing that can add delay. Recheck the displayed resolution, refresh rate, and VRR status afterward.
  6. Calibrate HDR in the console or PC: follow the device’s HDR adjustment screen rather than copying settings from a different U7 suffix or QM6K size.
  7. Position for reflections: if you selected the QM6K, reduce direct light facing the panel; if you selected the matte U7SG, still avoid placing a bright lamp directly in the viewer’s sightline.
  8. Test every source: verify the actual signal from each console, PC, and streaming device because HDMI capabilities can differ by input.

Warranty, returns, and model verification

The cited material does not state a single warranty length or a universal return policy for either television. Those terms can vary by country, retailer, seller, and promotion. Read the policy attached to the exact listing, including who handles a defective-panel claim, the return window, shipping responsibility for a large screen, and whether a restocking fee applies.

Keep the carton and accessories until you have checked for dead pixels, backlight defects, HDMI handshake problems, and stable VRR operation. If a retailer ships a different suffix than the one ordered, treat that as a model mismatch rather than assuming the specifications are interchangeable.

Bottom line

The Hisense U7SG is the better overall midrange gaming TV when you prioritize HDR brightness, bright-room visibility, brighter colors, contrast, and local-dimming control. The TCL QM6K is the better value-oriented choice, with Google TV, a documented 144Hz panel, 4K/144Hz VRR support, two HDMI 2.1 ports, and a potentially much lower street price. Verify the U7 suffix before comparing prices or specifications; “Hisense U7” alone is not precise enough for a purchase decision.
