Short answer: Choose a TCL NXTPAPER phone if you need one device for reading plus full Android apps, color, video, cameras and fast interaction. Choose a true e‑ink phone if your priority is static black-and-white text, direct-sun readability, low distraction and the least display light. NXTPAPER can make an active phone screen more comfortable, but its reading modes do not turn the panel into E Ink.

What you are comparing

These phones solve different problems. TCL NXTPAPER is an LCD-based smartphone system that combines a matte, anti-glare surface with hardware filtering, software controls and, on selected generations, circularly polarized light. It remains an active display: pixels refresh continuously, the phone has a backlight, and the operating system behaves like a conventional Android device.

E-paper, usually called E Ink in product descriptions, is reflective. It uses available ambient light instead of continuously emitting its own light and can hold a static page with little or no continuing display power. That reflective, bistable behavior is why an e-ink phone generally feels closest to printed paper during long sessions and remains legible in direct sun.

TCL says NXTPAPER launched in 2021 as a hardware-and-software approach to a full-color, paper-like display. Its technology page lists 106 patents and 143 awards, with those figures stated as accurate in July 2025. Those numbers describe TCL’s development work; they do not make NXTPAPER an e-paper panel.

NXTPAPER and e-ink at a glance

Reading factor TCL NXTPAPER phone Dedicated e-ink phone
Display principle Active, backlit color display with matte treatment and software modes Reflective e-paper designed to retain static images with minimal continuing display power
Long-form text More comfortable than a glossy phone, but still an emitting display Closest to paper for sustained, static reading
Bright sunlight Improved by reduced reflections; can still lose contrast in harsh sun Usually strongest because ambient light makes the page more visible
Color Full color; useful for comics, magazines, maps, photos and ordinary web pages Often monochrome or muted, depending on the model
Scrolling and animation Fast, familiar smartphone response Slower refresh and visible transitions are common trade-offs
Apps and cameras Normal Android apps, video, camera and messaging experience Android availability varies; app performance and refresh behavior can be restrictive
Distraction control Max Ink can restrict apps and suppress unwanted messages Limited hardware and slower interaction naturally create more friction
Battery while reading TCL quotes up to seven days of immersive reading under a stated internal simulation Reflective, bistable operation favors very long static-reading sessions

No single row decides the purchase. The right choice depends on whether reading is the phone’s primary job or one activity among many.

How NXTPAPER changes a conventional phone screen

Matte and anti-glare treatment

The surface diffuses reflections that would otherwise mirror windows and overhead lights. Text therefore looks less like it is printed beneath glass. Diffusion can also soften fine details slightly compared with a glossy panel, so a reader who prefers maximum crispness may want to compare the same font at the same size in person.

Blue-light and color filtering

TCL describes multi-layer filtration that reduced harmful blue light to 3.41% in its internal test condition. That is a vendor laboratory figure, not an independently verified health outcome and not proof that the phone prevents eye strain or disease. Comfort still depends on brightness, viewing distance, font size, blinking and breaks.

Ambient adaptation and polarization

NXTPAPER generations use combinations of ambient adaptation, hardware filtering and, on selected models, circularly polarized light. The exact stack varies by phone, so do not assume every NXTPAPER model has identical optical behavior. Check the specification page for the particular regional version.

Reading modes are software profiles

Modes can change color rendering, filtering, contrast and which apps are available. They do not remove the backlight or replace the underlying display technology. An independent review noted that NXTPAPER’s modes improved readability substantially while remaining less visible than E Ink in strong sunlight.

The TCL 60 NXTPAPER reading tools

The TCL 60 NXTPAPER is the clearest documented example of the system. It has a 6.8-inch FHD+ display and three relevant modes:

  • Ink Paper Mode: a low-color, chapter-friendly profile for books, news, PDFs and documents.
  • Color Paper Mode: keeps color for comics, magazines and other illustrated pages.
  • Max Ink: a restricted reading environment that can block unwanted messages, whitelist selected apps and close running apps that are not needed.

TCL’s Europe product page claims up to seven days of immersive reading and 26 days of standby. The seven-day result is an internal simulation based on at least four hours of reading per day, and the standby figure is likewise a manufacturer claim. Treat both as planning estimates rather than a guarantee for every network, brightness level, app mix or battery condition.

Practical setup for a long chapter

  1. Open the display or NXTPAPER controls from Settings, or use the dedicated mode shortcut if your regional software provides one.
  2. Select Ink Paper Mode for novels, news, PDFs and mostly text-based documents. Use Color Paper Mode when illustrations carry information.
  3. Set text size and line spacing before judging comfort. A larger, well-spaced typeface usually helps more than extreme filtering.
  4. Enter Max Ink when you want a reading-only session. Allow only the reading, dictionary or note-taking apps you actually need.
  5. Lower brightness until the page remains clear without looking luminous, then adjust again when room lighting changes.
  6. Turn off notifications that are not needed for the session. Max Ink is useful for this, but ordinary Android notification controls can provide a similar result.

These steps make NXTPAPER behave more like a focused reader, but they cannot produce the reflective contrast of an e-ink panel under direct sun.

Why e-ink remains the better text reader

Reflective appearance

E-paper reflects the light already in the room or outdoors. With a static page, the display does not need to keep driving a backlight to maintain the image. That is the physical reason many readers report less glare and less visual fatigue during long, unchanging text sessions. It is not a promise that every person will experience zero strain; typography, ambient light and individual eyesight still matter.

Sunlight advantage

Direct sunlight that washes out an active display can make a reflective page easier to see. This is especially important for beach reading, outdoor work, travel and any situation where you cannot shade the phone. NXTPAPER’s matte surface reduces reflections, but it does not change the fact that a backlit panel can lose apparent contrast in harsh light.

Static-page battery behavior

An e-ink phone’s strongest battery advantage appears when a page remains static and the user reads rather than streams, scrolls rapidly or runs demanding apps. Once you add frequent refreshes, wireless radios, audio, navigation or video, the whole phone—not just the display—determines endurance.

Friction as a feature

Many e-ink phones make rapid, colorful, notification-heavy interaction less appealing. That inconvenience can protect reading time. NXTPAPER’s Max Ink mode can reproduce part of this effect, but a full Android phone remains only a tap away from video, social feeds and games unless you deliberately restrict it.

Where NXTPAPER is clearly stronger

Color content

Comics, magazines, illustrated textbooks, shopping pages, maps and photo-heavy articles benefit from NXTPAPER’s color capability. A monochrome e-ink phone may preserve the words but lose distinctions carried by hue, shading or photographs. Color e-paper exists, but many phone models still offer muted output and slower refreshes compared with an active display.

Fast interaction

Scrolling a long webpage, switching between references, typing notes, opening a link or watching a video feels normal on NXTPAPER. E-ink refresh behavior can make those actions slower and may show flashes or partial-refresh artifacts. If reading includes frequent research, translation, annotation or web navigation, the active display saves time.

One-device convenience

NXTPAPER combines reading with cameras, messaging, banking, navigation and ordinary app compatibility. Carrying one phone avoids the synchronization, charging and connectivity decisions that come with a separate reader. The trade-off is that the same convenience brings more notifications and more opportunities to leave the book.

Comfort, eye strain and what the claims mean

Do not interpret a paper-like marketing description as a medical certification. TCL’s 3.41% figure comes from an internal test of its filtration system; it does not establish a clinical reduction in eye strain. The company’s patent and award counts likewise indicate technology activity, not reading performance.

For either phone, use a comfortable font, keep the device at a sensible distance, avoid reflections, blink normally and take periodic distance breaks. If text remains uncomfortable, headaches persist or vision changes, a display mode is not a substitute for professional eye care.

Common misconceptions

“Ink Paper Mode turns NXTPAPER into E Ink.”

No. It changes the image profile and may limit apps, but the phone still uses its original active, backlit panel.

“The seven-day figure is normal smartphone battery life.”

No. TCL describes it as an internal simulation with at least four hours of reading per day. Your result will change with cellular signal, brightness, wireless use, app activity and battery age.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“E-ink is always better for every kind of reading.”

No. E-ink is strongest for static text and sunlight. Color documents, interactive web pages, video and rapid note-taking favor NXTPAPER.

“A lower blue-light number proves the display is healthier.”

No. The 3.41% statement is a vendor test result, not an independent clinical endpoint. Comfort and health should be judged separately.

Buying checklist

  • Confirm the exact model and region. NXTPAPER hardware and mode names can differ between generations and markets.
  • Check whether the phone includes Ink Paper Mode, Color Paper Mode and Max Ink, rather than assuming every model has all three.
  • Read the battery footnote. Separate continuous-reading simulations from standby estimates and ordinary mixed-use claims.
  • View the screen outdoors if sunlight reading is important. Matte treatment helps, but it cannot guarantee e-ink-level visibility.
  • Test your essential apps. Max Ink may restrict apps by design, while an e-ink phone may run them with slower refresh or limited color.
  • Decide whether you want color. If magazines, comics or photos are central, an active color display is the safer choice.
  • Consider distraction honestly. A reading mode helps only if you are willing to keep notifications and entertainment outside the session.

Bottom-line decision

NXTPAPER is the better compromise: it makes long reading more pleasant without giving up color, cameras, video or fast Android apps. It is particularly compelling for commuters, students and anyone who alternates between books and ordinary phone work.

A true e-ink phone is the better specialist tool when reading is the main purpose, pages are mostly static and direct-sun legibility, low distraction and minimal display emission matter more than speed. Its limitations are not defects for that use; they are what keep the device from behaving like another bright, interruption-heavy smartphone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of NXTPAPER as a comfort-focused smartphone display and e-ink as a reflective reading display that happens to run phone software. Pick the technology that matches the conditions in which you read most often, not the one with the more paper-like name.
