TCL Australia lists 3,200 local-dimming zones and peak brightness of up to 6,000 nits for this size, alongside 4K 144Hz gaming support. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Early viewing reports are promising, but the available evidence does not amount to a completed independent test of every regional 85C8L variant.
What is the TCL 85C8L?
It is the 85-inch version of TCL’s C8L SQD-Mini LED television family, with 4K resolution and Google TV. The exact features can vary by market: TCL says specifications may change, and some features may require a software update. Check the listing and manual for the television sold in your region before buying. TCL’s product page and the TCL Australia specification sheet are useful references, but neither guarantees that every regional model is identical.

Picture quality: bright Mini LED, with important caveats
TCL Australia lists 3,200 local-dimming zones for the 85-inch model and peak brightness of up to 6,000 nits. These are TCL-published specifications, not results from an independent lab test. TCL Europe’s IFA 2026 announcement gives a C8L range maximum of up to 4,032 zones; that range-level figure should not be attributed to the 85-inch set. TCL Europe’s announcement describes the wider range, while the Australian sheet specifies the 85-inch model.

More dimming zones can give a Mini LED TV finer control over bright and dark parts of an image, but the count alone cannot establish black level or eliminate halos around subtitles and bright objects. Room lighting, picture settings and viewing angle matter. What Hi-Fi?’s January 2026 CES hands-on preview reported very little blooming when viewed straight on, but some blooming from off-axis seats; it also noted that the specification information available at CES was limited. That is an early impression, not a controlled test of a retail 85C8L. Read What Hi-Fi?’s C8L/QM8L preview.

For a bright room or daytime sports, the manufacturer’s high-brightness claim makes the set worth considering. For films watched in a dark room, pay closer attention to black detail and blooming from your actual seating positions. The available evidence does not establish how the 85C8L compares in measured brightness, contrast or color with a specific OLED or competing Mini LED television.
Gaming, HDR and smart TV features
TCL Australia’s sheet lists four HDMI 2.1 ports, 4K at 144Hz with variable refresh rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and FreeSync Premium Pro. It also lists HDR10+, Dolby Vision IQ and Google TV. These are Australian-market specifications; verify the ports, enabled features and firmware on the regional model before relying on them for a console or PC setup. See TCL Australia’s specification sheet.
If you use more than one high-bandwidth source, check how the ports are arranged and whether your preferred sound system or receiver needs one of them. HDR format support is useful only when it matches the services and devices you use; the listed formats do not by themselves indicate how well the TV renders HDR.

What independent coverage says—and does not say
There is limited independent evidence for the exact regional 85C8L. What Hi-Fi?’s CES preview offers initial viewing impressions, not a full lab review. TechRadar’s favorable findings for the US QM8L came after testing that US model; its article describes it as equivalent to the UK C8L. That does not establish identical firmware, tuner, ports or calibration across regions. Read TechRadar’s report and its model qualification.
TCL Germany also lists connect’s June 2026 “Überragend” and “Highlight” references for the 85C8L. The product listing does not provide the review methodology, so those references are not enough to infer how the TV performs in a controlled comparison.
Sound and installation
TCL Australia lists Dolby Atmos and Bang & Olufsen audio for the C8L. Those are manufacturer-listed features; they do not establish that the built-in speakers will suit every room or replace a separate sound system.

The Australian specification sheet says a wall bracket is not included and provides a VESA mount section. Before choosing a mount, confirm the exact regional TV’s VESA pattern and mass, then check the mount’s load rating, wall construction and required clearance. Do not assume a mount will fit based only on the screen size.

How to decide whether it is worth buying
The 85C8L is a plausible choice if you want a very large screen, a bright Mini LED picture and the gaming features listed for the Australian model. The case is less certain if your priority is dark-room performance, consistent picture quality from wide seating angles or a proven head-to-head advantage over OLED: the available material does not provide controlled comparisons for this exact television.
- Check your room and seating: evaluate the screen from the seats you use, especially if viewers sit far to the sides.
- Verify your region’s model: confirm local specifications, ports, HDR formats, firmware, warranty and service options rather than assuming the Australian sheet applies elsewhere.
- Compare local prices: weigh the 85-inch C8L against OLED and other Mini LED sets available at the price you can actually buy. TechRadar reported a UK C8L family launch-price range of £1,099–£3,999 in May 2026; that historical range is not the current price of the 85-inch model.
- Check delivery and fit: measure the route into the room, furniture or wall space, and installation requirements for an 85-inch television.
Buy based on the exact regional model, current local price and your viewing conditions—not on the C8L family’s maximum zone count or an assumed equivalence between markets.
