Verdict: The U.S. TCL 50 XE NXTPAPER 5G is worth considering only when heavily discounted and when its low-glare, paper-like screen matters more to you than sharpness, speed, cameras, or long-term software support. Its 5,010mAh battery, microSD slot, headphone jack and 5G are useful, but the 720p-class display, 4GB of RAM and unclear update commitment make it a weak choice at anything close to its original under-$199 positioning.
What the TCL 50 XE NXTPAPER 5G actually is
This is the U.S. model announced by TCL at MWC 2024, with North American availability planned from the third quarter of 2024. TCL positioned it below $199 at launch; that is historical launch guidance, not a verified September 2026 street price. The announcement is documented at TCL’s MWC 2024 release.
Do not confuse it with the conventional-display TCL 50 XE 5G, the larger 50 XL NXTPAPER 5G, or global TCL 50/50 Pro NXTPAPER models. Those devices can have different screens, processors, cameras, bands and software.

What NXTPAPER changes—and what it does not
NXTPAPER 3.0 is a conventional color smartphone display, not electronic ink. It runs video, animation, games and ordinary Android apps at 90Hz. TCL markets the screen’s treatment and display processing as reducing glare and blue-light exposure and creating a more paper-like view. That can be more comfortable for some readers, but it is not a medical guarantee and individual results vary.
The benefit: less glare for reading
For articles, ebooks, messaging and web pages, the reduced-glare presentation is the reason to choose this phone. The matte-like effect can be preferable to a glossy budget LCD in bright rooms or under overhead lights.
The cost: noticeably lower sharpness
At 720 × 1612 on roughly 6.6 inches, small text, icons and photos are less crisp than on a 1080p phone. The 90Hz refresh rate makes scrolling smoother, but it cannot add detail. If you watch high-resolution video, read dense PDFs or care about fine UI text, the resolution is likely to bother you more than the glare reduction helps.

NXTPAPER also is not an e-reader replacement: it does not provide e-ink’s reflective, static-image behavior or distraction-free reading experience.

The MT6835 and 4GB of RAM are aimed at calls, messaging, email, browsing, navigation, streaming and light multitasking. Casual games should be reasonable, but this is not a gaming or demanding-editing phone. Four gigabytes leaves less room for keeping many apps active, and large games or camera processing may feel constrained as software gets heavier.
No independent benchmark, frame-rate, thermal or app-retention testing is established by the cited official material, so performance claims should remain practical rather than numerical. A microSD card expands file storage; it does not turn removable storage into equivalent system RAM or guarantee that every app can move there.

- Next-Level Eye Comfort: The TCL NXTPAPER 70 Pro phone features a 6.9" FHD+ 120Hz NXTPAPER 4.0 display with anti-glare, flicker-free visuals, and natural light simulation, so everything feels clear, calm, and comfortable from your first morning message to your last bedtime scroll. Hardware-level blue light is reduced to 3.41%, while the TCL Eye Care Assistant smartly adjusts settings to help ease eye strain during reading, videos, browsing, or long screen sessions
- Four Display Modes: With the dedicated NXTPAPER Key, the TCL NXTPAPER 70 Pro smartphone lets you instantly choose the best view for what you’re doing. Use Standard Mode for crisp everyday browsing, Color Paper Mode for comics and digital art, Ink Paper Mode for comfortable reading, and Max Ink Mode for a focused e-reader-like experience with longer battery life
- Fast Android 16 Performance: Keep more of what matters with the TCL NXTPAPER 70 Pro cell phone. Powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chipset, 8GB RAM, and up to 16GB expandable RAM for 24GB total, it delivers smooth, responsive performance for streaming, gaming, work apps, social media, and everyday multitasking
- All-Day Battery, Fast Charge: Stay powered through long workdays, travel days, and everyday scrolling with the TCL NXTPAPER 70 Pro’s long-lasting battery. When it is time to recharge, 33W fast charging powers the Android phone from 0% to 50% in just 38 minutes. Reverse charging also lets you share power with other mobile phones or devices when you, or someone nearby, needs a quick boost. Note: Charger not included
- Capture Clear, Crisp Moments: With a 50MP main camera, 8MP ultra-wide lens, and 32MP front camera, the TCL NXTPAPER 70 Pro smart phone helps you capture sharper details, wider perspectives, and beautifully natural selfies. Powered by TCL MuseFilm, CCD-inspired filters, and AI editing tools, every shot gets a cinematic look with less effort. Super Night Mode, OIS + EIS stabilization, and horizon lock help deliver clear, steady photos and videos in low light or on the move
Cameras: useful hardware, unproven image quality
The rear array combines a 50MP main camera, 5MP ultrawide and 2MP depth sensor. The front camera is 8MP. Both sides are specified for 1080p video at 30fps. Autofocus, fixed-focus modules and an LED flash are listed in the U.S. sheet.
Those numbers do not establish low-light quality, autofocus reliability, portrait separation or stabilization. The official specifications provide no independent samples or measurements. Expect the camera system to be oriented toward basic daylight photos and video rather than flagship-like results, and treat any listing that promises “excellent” photography as marketing unless it supplies credible testing.

Battery, charging and physical features
The 5,010mAh battery is a strong capacity for this price class. TCL/Cox lists “up to” 22 hours of mixed use, up to 29 days of standby and charging time of up to two hours; these are manufacturer or carrier-sheet figures, not independent endurance tests. Actual results vary with 5G reception, brightness, refresh-rate settings, gaming, background apps, temperature and battery age.

The listed U.S. package includes an 18W charger and USB-C cable, but clearance, used and third-party bundles can omit them. USB-C is USB 2.0 rather than a high-speed interface. A 3.5mm headphone socket, two speakers, side fingerprint reader and face unlock are practical advantages, while the phone also includes GPS, gyroscope, compass, barometer, proximity and light sensors.

The manual lists LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 12, 13, 25, 26, 41, 48, 66 and 71, plus 5G bands n2, n5, n25, n41, n48, n66, n71, n77 and n78. It also documents nano-SIM, hotspot support and Bluetooth 5.3. Band lists are useful, but they do not guarantee VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, 5G access, IMEI acceptance or carrier certification.
Before buying, obtain the exact model number and IMEI and check them with your intended carrier. This is essential for imported, refurbished, marketplace and carrier-branded stock. Verify all of the following:
- Whether the phone is unlocked or tied to a carrier.
- Carrier approval for VoLTE, 5G and Wi-Fi calling.
- That the IMEI is clean and accepted.
- The return window, warranty provider and included charger.
Software and support in 2026
The phone launched with Android 14. Do not assume that is the current installed version, or that Android 15 or later is guaranteed. TCL’s official support page provides manuals and downloads but does not clearly document a long-term Android-version or security-update schedule for this model.
TCL’s broader 50-series support index marks several related phones as end-of-life for repair or replacement while still listing this model’s downloads. That points to an older, potentially clearance-stage product; it is not proof that updates stop immediately. On a used or open-box unit, check Settings > System > System update and Settings > About phone for the installed Android and security-patch dates. Confirm warranty and parts availability with the actual seller.

| TCL 60 XE NXTPAPER 5G | Newer generation with a 6.78-inch FHD+ NXTPAPER display, 50MP rear system, 32MP front camera and 5,010mAh battery listed by TCL. | Exact U.S. configuration, carrier certification, software policy and live price. |
| TCL 50 XE 5G | May cost less if you only need basic 5G and do not care about NXTPAPER. | It has a conventional display and is not the same phone. |
| Dedicated e-reader | Better for long-form reading, outdoor readability and distraction-free use. | It is not a cellular Android phone. Kindle and Kobo product ranges are at Amazon Kindle and Kobo. |
| Current 1080p budget Android phone | Usually preferable for text sharpness, video, gaming and photography. | Compare current RAM, update policy, warranty and carrier approval rather than relying on the TCL’s old launch price. |
