TaxSlayer Self-Employed is worth considering if you need to report freelance or other self-employment income on an individual return and want plan-specific 1099 and Schedule C guidance. TaxSlayer listed the federal plan at $74.99 on October 7, 2026, with state filing extra. That is not an all-in quote: check the checkout total and confirm the software supports your forms before deciding. The features described here are TaxSlayer’s claims; the software’s ease of use and calculation accuracy were not independently tested.
What TaxSlayer Self-Employed is designed to handle
TaxSlayer presents Self-Employed as its consumer filing plan for contractors, 1099 filers, side hustlers, and other self-employed people. It is for preparing an individual tax return that includes self-employment activity—not necessarily for preparing a separate return for a business entity.

TaxSlayer advertises extra guidance for 1099 income and Schedule C, access to tax professionals with self-employed expertise, a self-employed tax guide, and year-round reminders about quarterly estimated payments. Those are features the company lists; they do not establish how easy a particular return will be to complete or what help will be available for every question.

What the federal plan costs—and what the price leaves out
TaxSlayer’s product page listed these consumer plan prices on October 7, 2026. Prices and offers can change, and TaxSlayer says the actual price depends on a customer’s selections, submitted information, and applicable coupons, discounts, or promotions.
#1 Best Overall
| Plan | Displayed price or offer | Relevant qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Simply Free | Free federal return for qualifying taxpayers | Eligibility is restricted; self-employment income should not be assumed to qualify. |
| Classic | $44.99 | State filing fees and any applicable offers or selections may affect the total. |
| Premium | $64.99 | TaxSlayer lists priority support, live chat, and Ask a Tax Pro for this tier. |
| Self-Employed | $74.99 | Federal filing price; state filing costs extra. |
The paid Self-Employed price is therefore a starting point, not the amount to budget for every return. Before filing, confirm the federal and state charges, any additional-state filing needs, and any optional services shown at checkout. TaxSlayer states that prices may change without notice.
How Schedule C and estimated taxes fit into a freelancer’s return
Self-employment filing is not just entering a 1099. TaxSlayer’s 2024 guide gives this basic form context:
Rank #2
- Schedule C reports business profit or loss.
- Schedule SE calculates self-employment tax based on net earnings reported on Schedule C.
- Form 1040-ES is used to calculate estimated tax payments.
W-2 wages and 1099 income can both appear on the same individual return. TaxSlayer’s guide also stresses keeping income and mileage records. Good records can make preparation more organized, but whether an expense is deductible depends on the applicable tax rules and the facts of the business. Because that guide is labeled 2024, use current IRS materials or qualified tax advice for current-year requirements rather than treating it as an up-to-date statement of law.

It may suit a straightforward individual return
The plan’s stated audience and advertised 1099 and Schedule C guidance make it relevant to freelancers or contractors whose work belongs on an individual return. The quarterly-payment reminders may also be useful to someone who wants prompts to consider estimated payments, though reminders are not a substitute for calculating what is due.

Check carefully if your filing is specialized
TaxSlayer says its description of support for “all tax situations” refers to the forms, credits, and deductions its software supports; it also cautions that business tax returns and other specialized situations may not be included. If you operate through an entity with its own filing requirement, have unusual circumstances, or need specialized forms, verify coverage directly or consider a qualified preparer. Do not infer that a consumer self-employment plan prepares a separate business return.
Do not choose Simply Free based on the word “free” alone
TaxSlayer says Simply Free has age, income, credit, and deduction restrictions, and that fewer than a majority of U.S. taxpayers may qualify. Check the current eligibility rules and supported forms for your situation before relying on that tier, especially if you have self-employment income.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the available evidence does—and does not—say about quality
The listed features and prices establish what TaxSlayer advertises, not whether its interface is intuitive, whether a deduction is easy to find, how well records can be imported, or whether support will resolve a specific issue. Those points were not independently tested here, and no consumer-product accuracy or satisfaction statistic is established by the sources cited for this review.
There is limited institutional context: the IRS’s Publication 5361, TaxSlayer Procedural Updates for SPEC Partners and Employees, revised August 2025, says TaxSlayer remained a software provider for the VITA/TCE program for filing season 2026. That statement concerns the program’s software provider; it is not an IRS endorsement of TaxSlayer’s consumer Self-Employed plan or evidence of its performance.

How to decide before filing
- Identify what you are filing. Confirm whether you need an individual return with self-employment income or a separate business return, and list any specialized forms involved.
- Verify form coverage. Check TaxSlayer’s current supported forms and confirm that your specific Schedule C, credits, deductions, and other filing needs are covered.
- Compare the checkout total. Include the federal plan, state filing, any additional states, and optional services; use the live price rather than treating the displayed federal amount as your final bill.
- Match the support to your needs. Review what access to self-employed tax professionals includes for the current plan, and compare it with the kind of assistance you expect to need.
- Organize your records. Gather income documents and relevant business records, including mileage records where applicable, before starting. Confirm current tax treatment with current IRS guidance or a qualified professional when a rule is uncertain.
