Tata Play Smart is a new streaming app for supported Samsung smart TVs running Tizen in India. It delivers more than 500 live television channels through a broadband connection, with channel numbers, an electronic program guide (EPG) and selected catch-up content. You do not need a Tata Play satellite subscription, dish or set-top box, but you do need reliable internet access.
What Tata Play Smart offers
The app is designed to reproduce the familiar pay-TV experience inside a smart-TV application rather than through a satellite receiver. Tata Play says the service carries more than 500 live channels, arranged with dedicated channel numbers and an on-screen EPG for browsing what is live and what is scheduled next.

Catch-up viewing is available for selected channels, so supported programmes can be watched after their original broadcast. The service is initially highlighted for Samsung televisions using Tizen OS in India. Reports also identify versions for Android TV, Google TV, Amazon Fire TV and VIDAA devices, although availability can vary by country, device model and app-store listing.
Can you watch Tata Play without a dish?
Yes. Tata Play Smart streams television over the internet, so a satellite dish, outdoor installation and external Tata Play set-top box are not required. An existing Tata Play DTH subscription is also not required for the app.

How to install it on a Samsung Tizen TV
- Connect the Samsung TV to broadband and confirm that the television is set to India.
- Open the TV’s app store from the Home screen and search for Tata Play Smart.
- Check that the app is published for your model and region, then select Install.
- Open the app and follow its sign-in or subscription prompts. A satellite account is not required, but the service may request account and payment details.
- Choose the available language package and use the channel-number interface or EPG to start watching.
Samsung has many Tizen generations and regional model variants. The launch reports do not provide a complete model-by-model compatibility list, so the app-store result on your exact television is the practical first check. If the app does not appear, update the TV software, verify the Samsung account region and check Tata Play’s current supported-device information before subscribing.
What the launch says about Indian pay television
Tata Play is presenting the app as an additional distribution route, not as a replacement for satellite television. Managing director and CEO Harit Nagpal said: “Tata Play is not looking at this as a shift away from DTH, but as an expansion of how we serve evolving consumer needs.”

The move comes as India’s paid-DTH base contracts. The Economic Times, citing the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s April–June 2026 performance indicator report, said the four paid DTH operators had 48.56 million active subscribers on June 30, 2026, down 13.4% year over year from 56.07 million. Tata Play was reported at 14.84 million subscribers and a 30.56% market share on that date. The streaming app lets the company reach broadband-connected households that may not want a dish installation while continuing to serve existing satellite customers.
Check these points before subscribing
- TV support: Confirm that your Samsung model and Tizen version show Tata Play Smart in the Indian app store.
- Country: The launch described here is for India; an app listing or plan may not be available in other markets.
- Internet: Use a stable broadband connection, especially if several devices share the same network.
- Channel mix: “More than 500” is a total claim; the reports do not include a complete channel-by-channel catalogue or guarantee that every language is included in every plan.
- Price: Verify the current monthly fee, additional-language charges, taxes and any promotional conditions at checkout.
- Catch-up limits: Catch-up applies only to selected channels and programmes, not automatically to the entire lineup.
Bottom line for Samsung TV owners
If you are in India, have a supported Samsung Tizen TV and reliable broadband, Tata Play Smart is a way to get a large live-channel lineup without installing a dish or keeping a satellite box. Its reported INR 199 starting plan and TV-style channel navigation make it a direct internet-delivered alternative for households that still want scheduled television. Check your exact model, language needs, channel list and current price before committing.
