The Tamron 12-20mm F2.8 (A084) is a full-frame ultra-wide zoom for Sony E- and Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras. Its unusual draw is a 12mm wide end with a constant F2.8 maximum aperture, in a lens Tamron lists at 570g for Sony E and 585g for Nikon Z. Digital Camera World’s early review found the center sharpness acceptable but the edges softer, and said precise star focus was difficult; its lab comparison was still pending. That makes this a promising, unusually wide option—not yet a lens with a settled independent lab verdict.
What the Tamron 12-20mm F2.8 is
The A084 is designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras and is available in two mounts. Tamron announced it on July 15, 2026, with Sony E availability listed for July 30 and Nikon Z availability for August 27. Check Tamron’s launch announcement for the release details and its A084 specifications for the manufacturer’s current listed figures; Tamron notes that specifications and functionality may change.

The 12–20mm range covers an expansive 121°58′ diagonal angle of view at 12mm to 94°30′ at 20mm on full frame. The constant F2.8 maximum aperture is useful when light is limited and gives more exposure flexibility than an F4 zoom. The trade-off is reach: 20mm remains an ultra-wide view, not a general-purpose standard zoom focal length.

What the early review found
Digital Camera World published its review on July 15, 2026, and says its reviewer made more than 800 photos. The publication describes the lens as portable, reports acceptable center sharpness with somewhat smudged edges, and notes minor vignetting and no observed aberration in its assessment. It also found that getting stars perfectly in focus was challenging. These are that outlet’s early review observations, not a universal test result. The reviewer said laboratory testing was still forthcoming and would provide a better overall comparison. Read the Digital Camera World review for its full account.
For landscape and architecture work, edge performance matters because detail often runs across the frame; for night skies, reliably focusing stars is central. The early findings give potential buyers specific questions to investigate in later testing, but they do not establish how every copy performs or resolve the lens’s overall image quality.

| Lens | What the review says it offers | How to think about the trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Tamron 12-20mm F2.8 | 12mm wide end and F2.8 maximum aperture (Tamron specifications, 2026) | Prioritizes an especially wide view and fast aperture, but tops out at 20mm. |
| Nikon Z 14-24mm F2.8 S | Begins at 14mm; the review characterizes its sharpness as excellent (Digital Camera World, July 2026) | Consider it if you value the review’s sharpness assessment and prefer a longer tele end over the Tamron’s extra-wide 12mm view. |
| Sony FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM | Reaches 24mm while retaining F2.8; the review describes it as heavier and more expensive than the Tamron (Digital Camera World, July 2026) | Offers more range at the long end, with weight and cost identified by the review as compromises. |
| Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G | Described by the review as closer in price and weight, but with a slower F4 maximum aperture (Digital Camera World, July 2026) | May suit buyers prioritizing the review’s size-and-price comparison over a faster aperture. |
Digital Camera World reported July 2026 launch prices of $1,699 / £1,449 / CA$2,299 for Sony E and $1,799 / £1,529 / CA$2,399 for Nikon Z. Those are historical launch prices, not verified current offers; check a current retailer or Tamron’s regional listings before budgeting.
