That distinction matters. Bandai Namco’s launch notice does not establish a repeatable, title-specific crash, save-loss, or controller defect. What to do first when Tales of Eternia Remastered fails
- Apply version 2.0.0. Start the update from your console or Steam library, wait for the download and installation to finish, then restart the platform. Bandai Namco’s launch notice says: “To ensure the best possible gameplay experience for Tales of Eternia Remastered, please apply the latest update before playing.”
- Confirm the game reports the new version. Open the game’s information, properties, or software-details screen and check that the installed version is 2.0.0. If the old version is still shown, do not diagnose a crash or save problem yet.
- Check storage and the download state. Leave more free space than the listed update size, and make sure the queue is not paused or waiting for another download. The figures below are approximate download amounts from the launch notice, not permanent installation requirements.
- Restart after updating. A full console restart, or quitting and relaunching Steam, clears a stalled update process and gives the game a clean test environment.
- Reproduce the problem once and record it. Note the platform, system software version, game version, exact location or menu where it occurs, and whether it happens every time. That information is more useful to support than “it crashes sometimes.”
If the problem disappears after this sequence, the update or a temporarily incomplete installation was the likely trigger. If it remains, continue with the branch that matches the symptom.

An internet connection is required to apply the update. Keep additional free space available because a platform may need temporary room to download, unpack, and install it. Do not interpret the table as the game’s total installed footprint; Bandai Namco says the published amounts include different combinations of game and update data.
Changes confirmed by the publisher
- Japanese font-style selection was added.
- Titles were added to second-playthrough carryover.
- Some text bugs were fixed.
The notice does not list a crash fix, save-corruption repair, or controller workaround. Those omissions do not prove that no player can experience such a symptom; they mean there is no publisher-confirmed launch-patch cure to cite.
When the game keeps crashing
A crash can be caused by an incomplete update, damaged local files, a system-level problem, an overlay or driver conflict on PC, or a one-off failure. No authoritative launch notice establishes a reproducible Tales of Eternia Remastered crash location or frequency, so use the following as a diagnostic sequence rather than a guaranteed game-specific fix.

Run a clean, repeatable test
- Install version 2.0.0 and restart the platform.
- Close other games and applications. On PC, exit recording tools, performance overlays, and controller-remapping utilities temporarily.
- Launch the game without changing graphics, language, or controller settings. Test the same scene or menu that previously failed.
- If it crashes again, write down the exact step: boot, title screen, loading screen, a particular area, battle, menu, or save operation.
- Repeat once after another restart. A single crash followed by normal play is different evidence from a crash that occurs at the same point twice.
PC checks through Steam
- Quit the game and restart Steam.
- Open your Library, right-click Tales of Eternia Remastered, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Wait for the process to finish before launching.
- Install pending operating-system and graphics-driver updates from their normal system tools.
- Disable overlays one at a time, beginning with Steam’s overlay and any GPU, chat, capture, or frame-rate overlay. Test after each change so you know which setting mattered.

Console checks
- Confirm the update queue is complete rather than merely showing a partially downloaded game.
- Restart the console from its system power menu, then launch the game again.
- Check that the console has free storage beyond the approximate download amount for your platform.
- Do not interrupt an update or a save operation by powering off the console or disconnecting it from the network.
If the crash is tied to one save slot or one repeatable location after these checks, preserve that save, record the details, and send the report to platform or publisher support instead of repeatedly overwriting the only copy.
Save errors, missing saves, and suspected corruption
Do not assume that a missing save is a common confirmed defect. The launch patch notes mention text changes and second-playthrough carryover, but no save-error or save-corruption repair. A save that appears to vanish can also result from using a different user profile, selecting a different platform account, loading the wrong storage location, or a cloud-sync conflict.

Safe order of checks
- Stop making new saves in the affected slot. Repeated overwrites can remove the last usable copy if the problem is real corruption.
- Check the active account. Confirm that the console user or PC account is the one used when the save was created.
- Open the game’s own load screen. A file may still exist even if a platform’s recent-activity view does not show it.
- Check platform storage and cloud status. If the platform offers local and cloud copies, note which is newer before choosing a replacement. Do not delete either copy until you know which one contains the progress you need.
- Back up where the platform permits it. Copy the save or use the platform’s supported backup or cloud feature; this is a precaution, not a verified game-specific repair.
- Capture the exact message. Photograph or transcribe the error, including capitalization and any code, and record when it appeared.
What not to do
- Do not uninstall the game as a first response if you have not confirmed a backup. Reinstalling can remove local data on some systems or leave you with the same damaged save.
- Do not interrupt the game while its save icon or saving message is active.
- Do not describe a single missing file as proof that all saves are corrupted; test another slot or profile only after preserving the original data.
Contact platform or publisher support with the platform, game version, account context, exact error text, affected slot, and the steps that reproduce it. Bandai Namco’s launch notice does not provide a title-specific recovery command.

Controller not working or not detected
Steam’s listing advertises Full Controller Support and explicitly names Xbox Controllers and PlayStation Controllers. Steam Deck is marked Verified. That is a compatibility claim, not a promise that every cable, adapter, remapping layer, or third-party pad will work in every configuration.
Steam and PC
- Connect one controller and disconnect other pads, fight sticks, wheels, and virtual-controller devices for the first test.
- In Steam, open the game’s Properties and inspect the Controller section. Test the available Steam Input setting or the game’s selected controller profile, changing one option at a time.
- Reconnect the controller directly to the PC, or re-pair it if wireless. Avoid testing through a hub until direct connection works.
- Start the game after the controller is recognized by the operating system and Steam. If the game opens before the pad is connected, quit and relaunch it.
- Check that button presses appear in Steam’s controller test or desktop configuration screen. If they do not, the failure is below the game layer.
- Close remapping software and overlays, then test again. Two programs translating the same input can create duplicate or missing buttons.
These steps are general Steam diagnostics, not a publisher-confirmed Tales of Eternia Remastered controller fix. A compatible Xbox Wireless Controller is a reasonable replacement or backup when your existing device is not recognized, but buying a controller does not establish or repair a software defect.

PlayStation
The PlayStation listing confirms one-player offline play, Remote Play, and vibration support for DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4. Pair the supported controller through the console’s normal system settings, confirm it controls the console dashboard, and then launch the game. If dashboard input works but the game does not respond, restart the game and test with only that controller connected. The PlayStation information does not publish a game-specific controller-failure workaround.
Xbox and Nintendo consoles
For Xbox Series X|S, verify that the controller operates the console dashboard, reconnect it, and restart the game after the update completes. For Switch 2 or Switch, test the Joy-Con or Pro Controller from the console’s controller settings, then launch the game with the intended controller already assigned. These are platform-level checks; Bandai Namco’s launch notice does not confirm a title-specific input defect.
When Steam does not detect the controller
First determine whether Steam or the game is failing. If the pad is absent from Steam’s controller settings, update or reconnect it at the operating-system level before changing the game’s profile. If Steam sees it but Tales of Eternia Remastered does not, test the game’s Steam Input setting, one profile at a time, and relaunch after each change. Keep a note of the setting that works so a future update does not leave you guessing.

Use the same controller type that Steam lists as supported when narrowing the problem. Adapters and virtual devices add another translation layer and should be removed until the direct connection is proven.
How to report a problem that survives the checklist
A useful report turns a vague symptom into a reproducible case. Include:
- Platform and model, such as Steam on PC, Steam Deck, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, or Switch.
- Game version, with confirmation that version 2.0.0 is installed.
- System software or operating-system version.
- Controller model and whether it is wired, wireless, or connected through an adapter.
- Exact crash location, save-slot name or number, and the full error text.
- Whether the issue happens every time, only once, or only with one account or save.
- Which diagnostic steps changed the behavior, including file verification, a restart, a controller-profile change, or a different input device.
Keep the original save and any platform-generated error report. Support can do more with an untouched failing example than with a reinstalled game that no longer contains the relevant data.
