Tales as Old as Time: The Story of Beauty and the Beast

“Tales as old as time” most likely points to Beauty and the Beast, especially for readers who know the phrase through its later popular adaptations. But the wording is evocative, not a precise claim about the story’s age: the best-known literary versions identified here date to the 18th century, and later films and stage works are distinct retellings.

How old is Beauty and the Beast?

The dated literary versions central to its familiar history are Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve’s La Belle et la Bête, published in 1740, and Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s adaptation, published in 1756. Music Theatre International describes Beaumont’s as the best-known version. These dates establish a documented literary history; they do not prove that no related stories existed earlier, nor that every later version descends unchanged from one source. There is no substantiated Beauty and the Beast-specific figure here for the tale’s total age, number of variants, or worldwide prevalence. A National Geographic feature reports on a study that examined 76 basic plots, but that number describes the study’s plot set—not the number of Beauty and the Beast versions. The same feature’s reported hypothesis that “The Smith and the Devil” was told some 6,000 years ago concerns a different tale and cannot date Beauty and the Beast. National Geographic’s account

Who wrote the original story?

There is no single author behind every work called Beauty and the Beast. Villeneuve published one literary version in 1740; Beaumont later adapted the tale in 1756. Those are separate works, and Beaumont’s adaptation is the version MTI identifies as best known. Later screen and stage adaptations add further creative voices rather than replacing that literary history.

How did the tale become a modern adaptation?

Later adaptations should be understood as works in their own right, shaped by the medium and the people making them. MTI’s account names writer Linda Woolverton, lyricist Howard Ashman, composer Alan Menken, producer Don Hahn, and directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale among the contributors to Disney’s adaptation. The credits illustrate why it is more accurate to speak of a chain of adaptations than of one unchanged “original.” Music Theatre International’s account

Why do familiar fairy tales keep being retold?

Familiar plots offer material that new writers and audiences can reconsider. Fairy-tale scholar Suzanne Magnanini describes a social-historical approach: look for details that connect a particular version to the time and place where it was told. A tale can then be read not as a transparent record of an entire culture, but as one creative work that may engage with that moment’s concerns. University of Colorado Boulder’s feature

That approach matters when a retelling changes whose perspective drives the plot, what choices characters can make, or what kind of ending counts as desirable. Shannan Treasure Palma’s 2012 Emory dissertation examines fairy-tale myth in popular culture through feminist and comparative-media analysis, including Beauty and the Beast. Its abstract argues that fairy-tale myth can act as gendered cultural shorthand and offer a way to reconsider assumptions about identity and desirable endings. Palma’s dissertation abstract

Magic also does narrative work beyond creating a fantastical atmosphere. In Magnanini’s account, it can help characters confront obstacles and give a story a way to think through the questions and anxieties of its time. In the Colorado feature, she says: “You look at a some variations of Beauty and the Beast, like Giovan Francesco Straparola’s story of a pig king, where it’s a magical version of these questions, and maybe what’s actually happening is that fairy tales are a way to think through the anxieties and interests of the time.” University of Colorado Boulder’s feature

How to compare versions without treating them as the same story

When comparing Villeneuve, Beaumont, and later screen or stage adaptations, focus on the choices each work makes rather than assuming one version simply repeats another.

  • Text and medium: Identify whether you are looking at a literary tale, a screen adaptation, or a stage work; each is a distinct work and context.
  • Historical setting and social assumptions: Ask what the version suggests about family, class, or gender, while avoiding claims that one story represents an entire era or culture.
  • Character roles and agency: Notice whose perspective anchors the plot, who makes consequential choices, and what changes from version to version.
  • The role of magic: Consider whether magic merely supplies wonder or enables characters to overcome obstacles and explore the story’s concerns.

These are useful comparison questions, not a claim that scholarship has settled one universal interpretation of the tale.

What “old as time” gets right—and what it doesn’t

The phrase captures how a familiar story can feel enduring while new versions continue to change it. It should not be read as a verified date. The documented literary landmarks here are Villeneuve’s 1740 tale and Beaumont’s 1756 adaptation; the much older figure sometimes cited in discussions of fairy tales belongs to a different story. The appeal of the phrase is about the sense of familiarity, not proof that Beauty and the Beast is literally prehistoric or has remained unchanged.
