Compliance and historical fidelity are different goals
Compliance means meeting the rules for the edition you enter. For Jam 8, the event page names the 84 × 48-pixel base resolution and the three palette options. Historical fidelity is an additional design choice: you can make a game behave and look more like software suited to the original phone, even where the jam does not require it.

How to take the constraints further
Build around the small display
At 84 × 48 pixels, every element competes for a small amount of screen space. Favor clear silhouettes, readable shapes, and interfaces that do not depend on tiny detail. Treat the fixed resolution as a design boundary rather than drawing at a larger size and shrinking everything without checking legibility.

Choose a palette with intent
Pick one of Jam 8’s listed palettes—Original, Phosphor, or Gray—and make contrast do the work. Distinguish characters, hazards, and backgrounds through shape and placement as well as color, so the scene remains understandable within the selected palette.
Try handset-like motion and controls
If you want extra historical flavor, follow the older FAQ’s suggestions: use 15 fps, avoid sub-pixel movement and scrolling, align objects to the pixel grid, and keep controls and implementation simple. These are creative constraints, not a claim about Jam 8’s formal requirements. A deliberate limitation can help the game feel cohesive, but adding every restriction is not necessary to make an original entry.

What a jam entry can be
The constraints do not prescribe a genre. One participant described making a roguelite in a week for the 2023 jam; that is an example of one person’s project, not a standard workload or a promise that every genre will fit equally well. See the participant’s 2023 entry.
For a future edition, use that edition’s event page to determine compliance, then decide how much additional fidelity serves your concept. Jam 8’s dates and rules describe the 2026 event; they should not be assumed to govern a later edition.
