For concentrated exposure to the semiconductor industry, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is generally the better fit. Its pure-play foundry model, leading-edge manufacturing scale and direct connection to customer-designed AI and advanced-logic chips make the investment case easier to isolate.
Samsung Electronics is the broader, less pure alternative. It combines memory, foundry, logic, displays, smartphones, appliances and networks. That mix can add upside when DRAM, HBM or NAND markets recover and can cushion a chip downturn, but it also introduces more cyclicality and more execution variables. The right choice depends on whether you want focused advanced-foundry exposure or a diversified technology conglomerate.

The short answer: choose by exposure, not by company size
TSMC and Samsung are both major semiconductor businesses, but they are not interchangeable stocks. TSMC is primarily a manufacturing partner for other chip designers. Samsung owns a large semiconductor operation while also selling finished devices and components. Their revenue, profit drivers and risks therefore respond differently to the same industry cycle.

What TSMC and Samsung actually sell
TSMC is a pure-play foundry
TSMC’s 2025 annual report says the company does not design, manufacture or market semiconductor products under its own name. It manufactures chips designed by customers, so it does not compete with those customers by selling a competing branded processor or device.
That structure gives investors a relatively clean way to own the outsourcing trend in chip production. A single TSMC factory network can serve many chip designers and product categories, allowing the company to benefit when customers move to newer process technologies without requiring TSMC to guess which consumer product will win. The trade-off is concentration: the investment case depends heavily on foundry demand, wafer pricing, utilization, process leadership and the reliability of a geographically concentrated manufacturing footprint.
TSMC reported 12,682 products made with 305 technologies for 534 customers in 2025. Those figures describe breadth within the foundry model, not a portfolio of TSMC-branded chips. Its shares trade as Taiwan ticker 2330 and as the NYSE ADS ticker TSM; an ADS is not the same legal instrument as a Taiwan-listed share, so investors should check the ratio, fees and tax rules before comparing returns.
Samsung is a semiconductor business inside a technology conglomerate
Samsung Electronics’ Device Solutions division includes Memory, Foundry and System LSI. Other divisions sell phones, displays, appliances and network equipment. Samsung’s shareholder letter describes a “one stop solution” spanning logic, memory, foundry and advanced packaging.
This breadth creates several paths to growth. Samsung can sell memory into AI servers, manufacture logic for customers, supply components to device businesses and participate in end markets such as mobile and consumer electronics. It also means that a semiconductor thesis will not map one-for-one to the consolidated company’s results. A strong memory recovery can lift earnings even if foundry profitability is still developing; conversely, weakness in devices or displays can offset a good quarter in chips.

For an investor seeking a single-company technology holding rather than a narrowly defined foundry position, that diversification can be useful. For an investor trying to measure the performance of advanced semiconductor manufacturing itself, it makes attribution harder.
What the 2025 operating figures show
The latest full-year figures establish scale and momentum, but they should not be read as a direct league table. TSMC reports a foundry-centered business and emphasizes U.S.-dollar results, while Samsung consolidates memory, devices and other businesses in Korean won.
Recommended Free Tools
| Metric | TSMC | Samsung Electronics |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 revenue evidence | Revenue increased 35.9% year over year in U.S.-dollar terms; the company reported record revenue and EPS | Consolidated revenue of KRW333.6 trillion |
| 2025 profitability evidence | Record EPS was reported; the supplied company figures do not state a directly comparable consolidated operating-profit number here | Operating profit of KRW43.6 trillion |
| Research and development | Not stated in the supplied figures | KRW37.7 trillion invested in R&D in 2025 |
| Manufacturing scale | More than 17 million 12-inch-equivalent wafers of annual capacity managed in 2025 | Capacity figure not stated in the supplied figures |
| Industry context | Estimated worldwide semiconductor revenue excluding memory was US$611 billion in 2025, up 19% from 2024, according to TSMC’s estimate | Consolidated results include memory and non-semiconductor operations, so the industry estimate is not a Samsung revenue proxy |
TSMC’s 35.9% growth rate and Samsung’s won-denominated totals describe different scopes and currencies. A stronger comparison requires segment margins, wafer shipments, memory prices, capital spending and current valuation—not simply the largest headline revenue number.
Which company offers the cleaner AI investment?
Why TSMC is the more direct AI-infrastructure play
Most high-performance AI processors are designed by customers and manufactured in advanced logic processes. TSMC sits at that manufacturing junction. Its scale in leading-edge nodes and advanced packaging connects the company to demand for AI accelerators, custom data-center silicon and other complex chips without requiring it to market a competing branded processor.
The model has two advantages for an AI-focused investor. First, multiple customers can contribute to demand, reducing dependence on the product roadmap of one chip designer. Second, advanced packaging is part of the manufacturing solution for large AI systems; packaging capacity and process integration can be as important as the transistor node itself.

TSMC is not risk-free AI exposure. Customer concentration, the timing of new product ramps, capital intensity and the possibility that AI infrastructure spending normalizes all affect results. Its concentration in advanced foundry also means a manufacturing or geopolitical disruption would matter more than it would to a company with many unrelated businesses.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow Samsung participates in AI
Samsung addresses AI through more than one layer of the stack. Its foundry and System LSI operations pursue advanced logic, while its memory business can benefit from demand for DRAM, high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and NAND used in servers and other systems. That combination gives Samsung a potentially larger benefit when memory pricing and HBM demand are strong.
Samsung’s 4Q 2025 presentation says it began mass production of first-generation 2nm products and made initial shipments of 4nm HBM base dies. Its stated 2026 foundry objective is double-digit revenue growth and improved profitability while ramping second-generation 2nm. The objective is forward-looking; it is not evidence that the target has already been achieved.
Samsung therefore offers a wider AI semiconductor basket, but its outcome depends on several execution tests at once: qualifying and shipping HBM products, improving foundry yields and customer adoption, managing memory supply, and keeping the broader device businesses healthy. That can produce more upside in a successful cycle and more variability when one part of the plan slips.
Foundry comparison
| Question | TSMC | Samsung |
|---|---|---|
| Does the company compete with foundry customers? | Its stated model is to manufacture customer-designed products rather than sell products under its own name | It operates a foundry while also owning product and component businesses, so the group has a broader commercial footprint |
| Advanced-node evidence in the supplied 2025 material | Leading-edge scale, broad customer base and advanced packaging are identified as core advantages | First-generation 2nm mass production and initial 4nm HBM base-die shipments were reported in 4Q 2025 |
| Near-term stated target | No specific 2026 target is stated in the supplied material | Double-digit foundry revenue growth and improved profitability in 2026 while ramping second-generation 2nm |
Memory cycles and diversification can change the winner
TSMC’s results are more tightly tied to foundry manufacturing and advanced logic. That makes its earnings profile easier to connect to chip outsourcing, but it leaves less direct leverage to a sudden rise in commodity-memory prices.

Samsung’s memory exposure works in the opposite direction. When DRAM, HBM or NAND supply-demand conditions improve, pricing and mix can produce a powerful earnings rebound. When inventories rise or prices fall, the same exposure can reverse quickly. Memory therefore adds a cyclical lever that TSMC does not have to the same degree.
The rest of Samsung’s portfolio can soften a semiconductor downturn because phones, displays, appliances and networks do not all move in lockstep with memory. Diversification is not a free hedge: those businesses have their own competition, margins and capital needs, and they dilute the percentage of the stock that represents pure chip exposure.
Investors should decide whether they want that trade. A portfolio already full of consumer-electronics or memory-cycle exposure may gain little from Samsung’s breadth. Someone seeking one large technology holding with several earnings engines may value it more than the purity of a foundry specialist.

Both companies return cash to shareholders, but their reported per-share amounts are in different currencies and are attached to different securities. A nominal comparison is meaningless without the current share price, exchange rate, depositary-share ratio and investor’s tax status.
| Dividend evidence | TSMC | Samsung Electronics |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 total cash dividend per share | NT$18.0, up from NT$14.0 in 2024 | KRW1,668 per common share |
| Stated policy or payout information | The company says it has never reduced dividend per share since beginning cash dividends in 2004 | Investor-relations data report a KRW11.1079 trillion total payout and a 25.1% payout ratio for 2025 |
| What cannot be inferred from the figure alone | Dividend yield, after-tax income and the return for a U.S. ADS holder | Dividend yield, after-tax income and comparability with a Taiwan-dollar payment |
For a dividend decision, calculate the forward yield on the exact listing you can buy, then account for withholding tax, brokerage charges, currency conversion and the possibility that a future payout changes with earnings. TSMC’s history of not reducing per-share dividends is a useful policy point, not a guarantee of future yield. Samsung’s payout ratio describes the 2025 distribution and should not be treated as a permanent target unless the company confirms one.

The risks that separate the two stocks
TSMC: concentrated capacity and geopolitics
TSMC’s pure-play model concentrates the investment in one industry function. A prolonged slowdown in advanced-node demand, a delay in a major customer ramp, a yield problem or an interruption at a key manufacturing site would affect the thesis directly. The company also carries Taiwan-related geopolitical and infrastructure risk; diversification across customers does not eliminate geographic concentration.
Capital intensity is another consideration. Advanced fabs and packaging facilities require large, recurring investment before customer volumes are fully visible. High utilization can create operating leverage, while underused capacity can pressure margins. Investors should monitor capital spending, node transition timing and whether customer commitments support the planned expansion.
Samsung: execution across several fronts
Samsung’s main risk is not a single foundry metric. The outcome depends on memory-cycle management, HBM qualification and shipment growth, foundry yields and customer wins, plus the performance of the device businesses. The company has to execute across a broader set of technologies and markets.

Trade restrictions can affect equipment, materials and end-market demand. Currency movements can change the value of Korean-won results for overseas investors. Technology transitions can also arrive faster than a product or manufacturing program can be qualified.
Shared industry risks
- Demand cyclicality: Semiconductor orders can swing as customers correct inventories, delay capital spending or respond to changing end-market forecasts.
- Geopolitical and trade policy: Export controls, tariffs and restrictions on equipment or advanced chips can alter supply chains and addressable markets.
- Customer concentration: A large customer delay can affect a foundry’s near-term utilization even when long-term industry demand remains healthy.
- Technology obsolescence: A process, packaging approach or memory standard can lose relevance if customers adopt another solution.
- Currency and listing risk: Overseas investors may earn returns in a different currency from the one in which the company reports and pays dividends.
A practical decision framework
Choose TSMC when these statements describe your objective
- You want the cleanest listed exposure to advanced foundry manufacturing rather than a collection of electronics businesses.
- You believe AI accelerators, custom data-center silicon and other leading-edge logic will keep expanding customer outsourcing demand.
- You value a broad customer base and advanced packaging as strategic advantages.
- You can accept Taiwan concentration, foundry-capacity risk and the valuation attached to process leadership.
Choose Samsung when these statements fit better
- You want semiconductor exposure that includes memory, HBM, foundry and logic in one company.
- You are willing to accept stronger memory cyclicality in exchange for potential upside when DRAM, HBM or NAND conditions improve.
- You prefer diversification into phones, displays, appliances and networks, even though it makes chip exposure less pure.
- You believe management can improve foundry profitability, qualify HBM products and execute the second-generation 2nm ramp.
When owning both can make sense
A two-stock approach can separate the exposures rather than force a false winner. TSMC can serve as the advanced-foundry and AI-logic anchor, while Samsung can add memory-cycle and broader electronics exposure. Holding both does not remove regional, industry or valuation risk, and it may duplicate some semiconductor exposure already present in a diversified fund.
Checks to complete before placing an order
- Refresh valuation: Compare forward and trailing price-to-earnings, price-to-sales, free-cash-flow yield and enterprise-value measures using the latest reported quarter. Do not infer cheapness from a strong growth rate alone.
- Identify the exact security: Confirm whether you are buying Taiwan-listed TSMC shares, a U.S. ADS or a Samsung listing available in your market. Check conversion ratios, custody fees, trading hours and liquidity.
- Model currency exposure: TSMC reports and pays in Taiwan dollars for the local shares, while Samsung reports in Korean won. Your home-currency return can diverge from the company’s operating return.
- Estimate after-tax dividends: Apply the relevant withholding tax and local tax rules to the actual security, not just the company’s published per-share amount.
- Read the latest operating update: For TSMC, look for advanced-node utilization, packaging capacity and customer-ramp commentary. For Samsung, check memory pricing, HBM qualification, foundry yields and progress toward the stated 2026 objectives.
- Set a position limit: Decide in advance how much Taiwan, South Korea and semiconductor-cycle risk your overall portfolio can carry.
- Define the thesis-break conditions: Examples include a sustained loss of process leadership, a major deterioration in customer demand, failed HBM or 2nm execution, or a valuation that assumes more growth than the business can deliver.
Bottom-line choice
TSMC is the stronger default for an investor asking specifically for concentrated chip exposure, especially exposure to advanced logic, AI accelerators and customer outsourcing. Its foundry-only identity makes the source of returns comparatively clear.
Samsung Electronics is the better fit when the objective is a diversified semiconductor-and-electronics holding. Its memory and HBM businesses can add substantial upside in a favorable cycle, while its non-chip divisions provide diversification; the cost is more cyclicality and a less predictable link between the stock and advanced foundry performance.
Neither choice can be finalized from operating quality alone. Use current valuation, listing mechanics, currency, tax and geopolitical assumptions to decide whether the premium for TSMC’s purity or the complexity discount for Samsung better suits your portfolio.
