Taiwan’s Coast Guard Administration (CGA) says its patrol vessel Yunlin encountered two Chinese fishing boats in waters Taiwan designates as restricted near Dongsha Island on October 1, 2026. According to the agency’s account, one boat left after warnings; the other was sprayed with a water cannon, then given meals, towed out of the area and handed over to a Chinese work vessel. The incident details were reported by Focus Taiwan/CNA, which cited the CGA; the available account does not include a Chinese government response or independent confirmation.
What happened near Dongsha Island?
Focus Taiwan/CNA reported that the CGA’s Dongsha-Nansha Branch detected an unidentified boat at about 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2026. It was approximately 15.5 nautical miles northeast of Dongsha Island, about 5.5 nautical miles inside what Taiwan calls its prohibited waters. The CGA sent the 4,000-ton patrol vessel Yunlin to investigate.

At about 3 p.m., Yunlin found two Chinese fishing boats—Yue Hui Dong Yu 75066 (粵惠東漁75066) and Jin Sha (金鯊)—fishing around 27 nautical miles east of the island. The report placed them about 8 nautical miles inside Taiwan’s restricted waters.

Yue Hui Dong Yu 75066 left
According to the CGA account reported by CNA, Yunlin repeatedly warned both boats and told them to leave. Yue Hui Dong Yu weighed anchor and sailed away.

Jin Sha was sprayed and later towed out
Jin Sha did not leave after the warnings. After three unsuccessful radio warnings, Yunlin used a water cannon for 30 seconds from about 200 meters away; the spray was ineffective. Yunlin then moved closer and sprayed the boat for 90 seconds. The CGA described this use of low-lethal force as consistent with its standard operating procedures.
Later, at Jin Sha’s request, Yunlin provided 35 hot meals for its crew and towed the boat out of the restricted waters. Early on Friday, October 2, it handed the boat over to a Chinese work vessel, CNA reported. The account does not establish that anyone was injured, arrested or detained.

What do “prohibited waters” and “restricted waters” mean?
In CNA’s explanation of Taiwan’s terminology, “prohibited waters” means territorial waters, while “restricted waters” refers to a contiguous zone. Those are Taiwan’s administrative terms and claims, not a resolution of competing sovereignty or jurisdictional positions.

Taiwan controls it and the Taiping (Itu Aba) island group in the South China Sea; CNA reported that about 300 CGA personnel are stationed at Dongsha.

Why was the Coast Guard there?
The CGA framed the encounter as enforcement of Taiwan’s maritime borders and protection of marine resources. It describes Dongsha Marine National Park as Taiwan’s highest-level marine conservation area. That is the agency’s characterization; the incident account does not independently assess the boats’ conduct or the competing maritime claims.

In a statement dated October 1, 2025, the CGA said that since January 2023 it had expelled 159 Chinese fishing vessels and detained 12 small boats in Dongsha waters. Those are agency-reported totals, not independently audited figures in the available sources. The statement also described separate China Coast Guard intrusions; those ship incidents are distinct from the October 2026 encounter with fishing boats.
