Tailscale Exit Nodes vs Commercial VPNs: Privacy, Speed, and Setup Compared

Use a Tailscale exit node when you want traffic to leave through a device and Internet connection you control, such as a home or office gateway. Choose a commercial VPN when you want a provider-operated gateway, many public locations, and the simplest setup. Neither is universally more private or faster. A Tailscale exit node shifts trust to your own hardware and ISP; a commercial VPN shifts it to the VPN company. Performance depends mainly on whether the route is direct, where the gateway is located, its capacity, and your local connection.

This guide explains the difference in traffic architecture, privacy boundaries, realistic speed expectations, setup procedures, maintenance, and the situations in which each option makes sense.

What you are actually comparing

The two choices can both create a full-tunnel connection, but they are different service models.

Tailscale exit node

An exit node is a device in your Tailscale network (tailnet) that forwards a client’s non-Tailscale Internet traffic. The client’s traffic travels over Tailscale’s WireGuard-based encrypted connection to that selected device, then reaches the public Internet through the device’s local network and ISP. The exit node might be a computer at home, a server in an office, or another device you or your organization administers.

It is separate from ordinary Tailscale access to private devices. Without an exit node, Tailscale carries traffic between tailnet devices and leaves unrelated Internet traffic on the client’s normal connection. With an exit node enabled, the client sends both tailnet traffic and Internet traffic through the selected gateway, subject to the client’s local-network setting.

Commercial VPN

A commercial VPN gives you access to gateways operated by a VPN provider. You normally sign in to an app, choose a country or city, and enable the connection. The provider supplies the servers, upstream bandwidth, software updates, and gateway redundancy. You do not need to keep a computer at home or in an office online.

The provider’s server becomes the public Internet gateway. Websites see the provider’s address rather than the address of your local ISP, while the VPN company can potentially observe metadata associated with the connection according to its technical design, logging policy, jurisdiction, and operational controls.

Privacy: where trust moves

What Tailscale can and cannot see

Tailscale states that its connections are end-to-end encrypted with WireGuard. When you use your own exit node, Tailscale says it cannot see the public Internet traffic sent through that node. That means the control-plane company is not the same party as the gateway carrying your browsing traffic.

The exit-node device is still a trust point. Whoever controls that device can administer its operating system, inspect local telemetry, and see the connection relationship between the client and destinations at the gateway or network level. The upstream ISP can also observe that the exit device is communicating with Internet services. Encryption to websites such as HTTPS still protects the content from the ISP and exit-node operator in the usual way, but it does not hide all connection metadata from the gateway.

Tailscale destination logging for exit-node traffic is disabled by default. Enterprise tailnets can enable destination logging for network-flow visibility, so an organization’s policy may differ from the default. Check who administers the tailnet and what monitoring is enabled before treating an organizational exit node as private.

What a commercial VPN provider can know

A commercial VPN centralizes the gateway with the provider. The company controls the server, operating system, network links, and usually the client configuration. Its privacy posture therefore depends on more than the phrase “no logs”: consider the written policy, technical implementation, jurisdiction, independent audits, and whether the service offers protections such as a kill switch.

Proton says its free service is covered by its no-logs policy. In an audit announcement reproducing Securitum’s conclusion, Proton reports that the technical evidence reviewed in the examined server infrastructure did not indicate logging of browsing activity, DNS queries, destination services, traffic contents, or user-identifiable connection metadata. That is evidence about the audited infrastructure and engagement scope, not a universal guarantee about every future system or every possible record.

Proton also documents a WireGuard privacy issue: the protocol’s default static-identifier behavior can create linkability concerns. Its implementation describes mitigations intended to reduce that risk. If this detail matters to you, read the provider’s current technical explanation rather than assuming that every WireGuard deployment has identical privacy properties.

Mullvad says it does not log activity, commissions independent audits, operates under Swedish law, and includes a built-in kill switch. Those are provider statements; evaluate the underlying policy and audit material, and remember that an audit has a defined scope and date.

The practical privacy question

Ask which party you are more willing to trust with gateway operation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Your own exit device and ISP: You choose the hardware, account administrators, physical location, and maintenance process. This reduces dependence on a third-party VPN gateway but makes you responsible for security and availability.
  • A VPN provider: You avoid operating a gateway and can select from provider locations, but the provider controls the gateway and must be trusted to follow its published design and policies.

Neither model makes you anonymous by itself. Websites can still identify accounts, cookies, browser characteristics, and application-level activity, and a gateway operator can still see connection metadata that encryption does not conceal.

Speed and latency: why there is no universal winner

No controlled, apples-to-apples speed statistic establishes that Tailscale always beats or always loses to commercial VPNs. The outcome depends on the path taken for your specific devices and the capacity of the chosen gateway.

When Tailscale can be faster

Tailscale’s performance guidance says direct connections “nearly always result in lower latency and higher throughput” than relayed connections. A direct path lets the client and exit node communicate without routing encrypted packets through a relay. If your exit device is geographically close, has a strong uplink, and has sufficient CPU and network hardware, this can be efficient.

Performance is bounded by the exit device’s upload capacity: Internet traffic from the client must first travel to the exit node, and downloads must return through it. A home connection with limited upstream bandwidth can therefore become the bottleneck even when the client’s local connection is fast. CPU load, packet-processing capability, Wi-Fi quality, and the distance between client and exit node also matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a commercial VPN can be faster

A provider may place a gateway closer to you or connect it to a high-capacity backbone. That can outperform a distant or congested home exit node. It can also be more consistent if the provider has multiple gateways and automatically avoids overloaded servers, although behavior varies by service and app.

Provider performance is still affected by server load, the distance to the selected location, the VPN protocol, your ISP’s path to that server, and congestion between the server and the destination website. Selecting a distant country for an apparent public location generally adds latency.

Variables worth checking

  • Direct versus relayed Tailscale transport: Relays add an additional hop and typically reduce throughput.
  • Gateway geography: A nearby exit node usually has less round-trip delay than one on another continent.
  • Uplink and CPU: The exit device must encrypt and forward traffic in both directions without saturating its processor or link.
  • Operating-system tuning: Tailscale recommends current operating systems and notes Linux kernel 6.2 or later for best Linux performance.
  • Provider conditions: Commercial VPN results vary with server capacity, protocol, and congestion at the selected location.

Measure from the actual client and gateway at the times you care about. A result from one city, ISP, protocol, or day cannot be generalized to all Tailscale exit nodes or all commercial VPN servers.

How to set up a Tailscale exit node

The workflow has several approval points because an exit node can carry all of a user’s Internet traffic. Tailscale documents support for Linux, macOS, Windows, Android, iOS, and tvOS, with both devices running Tailscale 1.20 or later in the documented prerequisites.

1. Install and sign in on both devices

  1. Install Tailscale on the device that will provide Internet egress and on each client that may use it.
  2. Sign in to the same tailnet and confirm that both devices appear in the admin console.
  3. Patch the exit device and its operating system before exposing it as a gateway. Keep its firewall and account protections enabled.

2. Advertise the device as an exit node

  1. On the prospective gateway, open the Tailscale client’s settings or administration interface.
  2. Choose the option to advertise or offer the device as an exit node.
  3. Apply the change and wait for the device to appear as an available exit node in the tailnet administration view.

Advertising does not automatically let every user route through the device. An owner or administrator must approve the node, and access policy must allow the intended users.

3. Approve it and grant permission

  1. In the Tailscale admin console, locate the pending exit node and approve it.
  2. Review the tailnet’s access-control policy. If you use a modified policy, grant the appropriate users or groups access through autogroup:internet.
  3. Limit permission to the people and devices that need the gateway. Do not grant broad access merely because the node is convenient.

4. Select the exit node on each client

  1. On each client, open the Tailscale menu.
  2. Choose the approved device in the exit-node selector.
  3. Opt in on every client separately. Exit-node use is not automatically enabled for all devices in the tailnet.
  4. Check the client’s local-network setting. Local-network access is disabled by default; enable it only when the client must reach printers, NAS devices, or other services on its immediate LAN.

After selection, verify the public Internet address from the client and test both ordinary websites and any private resources you need. If the public address does not change, the client has not successfully opted in or the node is not reachable.

Maintaining and troubleshooting an exit node

The gateway must remain available

The exit device has to stay powered on, connected to the Internet, and able to run Tailscale. A laptop that sleeps, a desktop that shuts down, or a home connection that changes frequently can make the route unreliable. Keep the operating system, Tailscale client, and security controls patched.

Key expiry can create a misleading failure

Tailscale notes that key expiry can leave advertised routes present while the device is no longer reachable. The exit node may still appear in an administration view even though clients cannot use it. When traffic suddenly stops, check the device’s sign-in state and key status, then reauthenticate or renew the device according to your tailnet’s policy.

Direct paths and relays

If performance is poor, determine whether the client has a direct connection to the exit node or is using a relay. Network address translation, restrictive firewalls, and difficult connectivity can force relaying. Update supported operating systems, review firewall and NAT behavior, and compare results when the client and gateway use different networks. Tailscale’s performance guidance specifically emphasizes direct connectivity for lower latency and higher throughput.

Android-specific limitation

Tailscale describes Android userspace routing for exit nodes as “not performant” and potentially too slow for most cases. Treat an Android device acting as an exit node as an exception rather than a normal high-throughput gateway. An Android client using another device as its exit node is a different arrangement, but it can still be affected by the gateway’s capacity and path.

Local-network access

With local-network access disabled, a client using an exit node may be unable to reach devices on the client’s immediate LAN. Enable the setting only when required, and test that you are not unintentionally exposing or bypassing a network boundary. This option changes local reachability; it does not turn the exit node into a separate security appliance.

How commercial VPN setup differs

A commercial VPN usually removes the multi-party administration steps required by a self-controlled exit node.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create an account and complete any provider verification or subscription step required for the service you choose.
  2. Install the provider’s app on the client device.
  3. Sign in, select a server location, and connect.
  4. Enable the kill switch if the app provides one and you want traffic blocked when the tunnel drops.
  5. Choose a protocol when the app exposes that setting. Proton documents WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 support; availability and defaults can change by platform.
  6. Confirm the connection in the app and verify the public address from the client.

Mullvad says its built-in kill switch stops all traffic if the VPN connection fails. A kill switch can prevent accidental direct connections, but verify how the app behaves during startup, sleep, network changes, and intentional disconnects.

Side-by-side comparison

Question Tailscale exit node Commercial VPN
Who operates the gateway? You or your organization operate a device in the tailnet. The VPN provider operates the server and upstream network.
Public Internet address The address of the selected exit device’s ISP connection. The address of the provider’s selected server.
Private-network access Strong fit when the gateway sits on a home or office network; Tailscale private-device access is part of the same identity-controlled system. Usually not connected to your private home or office LAN unless the provider offers a separate feature.
Setup effort Install clients, advertise the node, obtain admin approval, grant policy access, and opt in on each client. Create an account, install the app, select a server, and connect.
Gateway maintenance You must keep the device online, patched, signed in, and connected. The provider maintains gateways; you maintain the app and account.
Trust center Your exit hardware, its administrators, and its ISP are the gateway trust points; Tailscale says it cannot see public traffic through your own node. The provider’s gateway, policies, jurisdiction, implementation, and audit scope are the trust points.
Location choice Limited to locations where you control suitable devices and connections. Usually offers multiple public locations; check the provider’s current list.
Speed ceiling Exit-device CPU, uplink, geography, and direct-versus-relayed transport. Server capacity, geography, protocol, congestion, and ISP path.
Failure behavior Clients can lose the route if the device sleeps, disconnects, or reaches key expiry. Depends on app behavior; use and test a kill switch if preventing fallback traffic matters.

Which option fits your priority?

Choose a Tailscale exit node when you need your own public IP

This is the natural choice for accessing services that expect your home or office address, testing from a known network, or using an exit gateway already attached to a private environment. You control where the traffic exits and who is authorized through tailnet identity and policy.

Choose Tailscale when minimizing a third-party gateway is the goal

A self-controlled node means the commercial VPN company is not the Internet gateway for that traffic. Tailscale states that it cannot see public traffic sent through your own exit node. You still need to trust the exit device’s administrators and ISP, and you accept responsibility for hardening and uptime.

Choose a commercial VPN when you want many locations

If you need an address in several countries or cities and do not want to deploy hardware in each place, a provider-operated service is more practical. Confirm the current location list, supported protocols, kill-switch behavior, privacy policy, and audit coverage before relying on a particular location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a commercial VPN for the shortest setup

For a nontechnical user who wants a tunnel on a phone or laptop without maintaining a gateway, account-and-app setup is simpler. The trade-off is that the provider controls the egress infrastructure and its privacy commitments must be evaluated.

Choose based on direct-path performance, not labels

Use Tailscale when the client can reach a nearby, capable exit node directly. Test a commercial VPN when your self-hosted gateway is distant, bandwidth-limited, or frequently relayed. There is no meaningful universal ranking without measurements from your own networks.

A practical decision checklist

  • Do you need a specific home or office public IP? If yes, start with an exit node located there.
  • Do you need many geographic locations without owning hardware? If yes, start with a commercial VPN.
  • Can you keep a gateway powered, patched, and connected? If not, avoid depending on a self-hosted exit node.
  • Will an organization administer the tailnet? Confirm its logging, access-control, and key-expiry policies.
  • Is a dropped tunnel unacceptable? Configure and test a commercial VPN kill switch, or test the failure behavior of your chosen Tailscale client and exit device.
  • Is performance critical? Check direct-versus-relayed status, gateway uplink, CPU load, location, and protocol before changing services.
  • Are privacy claims central to the decision? Read the current provider policy, jurisdiction information, and independent audit scope instead of relying on a marketing slogan.

Bottom line for privacy, speed, and setup

A Tailscale exit node is a self-controlled full-tunnel gateway integrated with an identity-managed private network. It is the better fit for a known home or office egress address, private-network access, and reducing dependence on a third-party Internet gateway. Its costs are operational: setup requires administrator approval and policy work, and the gateway must remain secure and available.

A commercial VPN is a provider-operated gateway optimized for convenience and geographic choice. It is the better fit when you do not want to maintain hardware, need many public locations, or want a straightforward app with options such as a kill switch. Its privacy depends on the provider’s implementation, jurisdiction, policies, and audit evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For speed, compare the actual routes. Tailscale’s direct connections generally have the advantage over its relayed paths, but a distant or underpowered exit device can lose to a nearby, well-connected commercial VPN server. Test the configuration you will really use rather than trusting a blanket claim about either category.
