Tailscale Exit Nodes Let You Take Your Home Internet on the Road

Yes. Install Tailscale on an always-on device at home, advertise and approve that device as an exit node, then select it from your traveling device. Tailscale sends the client’s ordinary internet traffic through the home connection, so websites generally see the exit node’s public IP rather than the network you are visiting.

What a Tailscale exit node does

An exit node is a device on your Tailscale network (tailnet) that carries another device’s public internet traffic. Technically, Tailscale routes the default IPv4 and IPv6 routes—0.0.0.0/0 and ::/0—through that device, much like a conventional VPN gateway.

This is useful on untrusted café or hotel Wi-Fi and when you need services to see an IP address associated with your home connection. Websites will see the selected exit node’s public IP, although their own geolocation, account, and fraud checks can still produce a different result.

Exit node versus subnet router

These features solve different problems:

  • Exit node: sends a client’s public internet traffic through home.
  • Subnet router: advertises selected private subnets so the traveler can reach devices such as a NAS, printer, or home server that do not run Tailscale.

An exit node alone is not a general home-LAN discovery mechanism. You can use both features when you want home internet egress and access to private-LAN addresses.

Set up a home exit node

  1. Create or use a Tailscale tailnet.
  2. Install Tailscale 1.20 or later on the intended home device and on each traveling client. Tailscale lists Linux, macOS, Windows, Android, iOS, and tvOS as supported exit-node platforms.
  3. On the home device, turn on the option to advertise it as an exit node.
  4. Have the tailnet Owner, Admin, or Network admin approve the advertised device in the Tailscale admin console.
  5. On each traveling device, open Tailscale’s exit-node control and select the approved home device.

Selection is per device. Choosing an exit node on one phone or laptop does not automatically apply it to every member of the tailnet.

Check your access policy

If your tailnet uses a customized ACL or grant policy, it must allow internet access through autogroup:internet. Granting access only to the exit-node device does not, by itself, authorize that device to act as an internet gateway.

Keep local-network access when traveling

When an exit node is active, local-network access is disabled by default. Turn on Tailscale’s Allow LAN access option if you also need the hotel, rental, or other local network—for example, to use a local printer or open a router management page.

That setting concerns the network where you are staying. To reach private addresses back at home, configure a subnet router and advertise the relevant home subnet; an exit node does not replace that configuration.

  • 【VPN CASCADING AT EASE】Surpassing the mediocre performance of most VPN routers for home usage, the Beryl AX is capable of hosting a VPN server and VPN client at the same time within the same device, enabling users to remote access local network resources like Wi-Fi printers or local web servers, and accessing the public internet as a VPN client simultaneously.

What happens to privacy and reliability

Traffic path and logging

Public traffic leaves through the home device, so the home internet connection, not the café or hotel connection, is the visible egress. Tailscale states that destination logging is disabled by default for traffic flowing through an exit node across all tailnets. That does not make the setup anonymous: the home ISP, the destination service, and the endpoint devices can still have their own records and policies.

Home device requirements

The exit node must remain powered on, connected to the internet, and authenticated. If the home uplink or device fails, the route can become unreachable. Authentication-key expiry is deliberately fail-closed: Tailscale leaves the advertised route configured but makes it unreachable instead of silently sending traffic over an untrusted network.

  • 【Repeater for Public, Hotel WiFi】Convert a public network(wired/wireless) to a private network(wired/wireless) for secure surfing. Work with Captive Portal. (Note: Most of the Free Public Wi-Fi hotspot set a time limit for users, which will disconnect your devices once the time is over. To deal with this situation, please reconnect your router to the wifi.)

Before a trip, verify power recovery after an outage, the home device’s internet connection, and the lifecycle of any key used by that device.

Speed and latency

There is no independent throughput, latency, or uptime figure established for this travel scenario. Performance depends on both uplinks, the home device’s hardware, protocol overhead, and the physical distance between you and home. Routing through home can therefore be slower than using a nearby connection, even when it improves consistency and trust on public Wi-Fi.

Cover many devices with a Tailscale travel router

A travel router can put devices that cannot run Tailscale behind one Tailscale-enabled gateway. GL.iNet identifies the GL-MT3000 (Beryl AX) as an AX3000 pocket-sized Wi-Fi 6 travel router with Tailscale support. Its documented workflow is to configure an always-on home computer with a public IP as the exit node, then configure the router to send its traffic through that node. Phones, tablets, streaming devices, and other clients connected to the router can then use the home egress without installing Tailscale individually.

The router is a convenience layer, not a replacement for the always-on home exit node: it still depends on that home device and its uplink. GL.iNet describes the router’s Tailscale feature as beta. Check model and firmware support before buying, and avoid simultaneous use of features that can compete for routing, including OpenVPN Client, WireGuard Client, GoodCloud Site to Site, ZeroTier, or AstroWarp.

Which setup fits your trip?

Consideration Per-device Tailscale Travel-router setup
Devices covered Each device running Tailscale and selecting the exit node Devices connected to the router, including those that cannot install Tailscale
Home requirement Always-on, connected, authenticated exit-node device The same home exit node, plus the travel router
Local-LAN access Enable Allow LAN access for the network where you are staying; use a subnet router for home private subnets Depends on the router’s configuration and the same exit/subnet-routing design
Key expiry Can make the route unreachable through fail-close behavior Can also interrupt router traffic because its upstream exit node is unavailable
Compatibility risk Primarily the supported Tailscale client and tailnet policy Firmware/model support and possible conflicts with other VPN or overlay features

Pre-trip and troubleshooting checklist

  • Confirm the home device shows as an approved exit node.
  • Test selecting it from every traveling device you plan to use.
  • Check that a custom ACL or grant policy includes autogroup:internet.
  • Verify the home device stays online after reboot and that its authentication key remains valid.
  • If websites still show the travel network, confirm the client is selecting the exit node and that the route is reachable.
  • If a home printer or NAS is missing, configure a subnet router; selecting an exit node is not sufficient.
  • If local hotel or rental-network devices stop working, enable Allow LAN access.
  • For a travel router, check firmware support and disable or carefully sequence competing VPN and overlay clients.
