A Pierce County jury acquitted Nathan Mapp of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Tamrah Dickman, then separately found that he acted in self-defense. All but two jurors agreed with the self-defense finding. Mapp’s separate guilty plea to unlawful firearm possession remained pending for sentencing when the verdict was reported in March 2026.
What did the jury decide?
The jury first found Nathan Mapp not guilty of both second-degree murder theories in the case. It then considered the separate question of self-defense. The News Tribune reported that at least 10 jurors had to find self-defense more likely than not, and that all but two agreed. The jury comprised seven men and five women.
The two decisions should not be conflated: the murder verdict was an acquittal, and the self-defense finding was a separate determination. The report does not establish which evidence or reasoning persuaded individual jurors.
What happened in the shooting?
The shooting occurred early January 28, 2024, at Mapp’s home in Tacoma’s Eastside. According to The News Tribune’s account of evidence presented at trial, Mapp called 911 and said he had shot Dickman, who was hiding in a hallway closet. Dickman, 39 and a mother of five, had been shot twice. The report also described three bullet holes in the closet, pepper spray in the air, and a pistol tucked into Dickman’s pants.

Mapp, who was 45 at the time of trial, said he did not know Dickman was in the closet. The prosecution challenged his account of events. The reported evidence does not by itself establish what Mapp believed when he fired or what the jury accepted.
How did the prosecution and defense describe the case?
The prosecution’s account
Prosecutors argued that the shooting grew out of conflict over money and drugs, and said Mapp gave inconsistent accounts to 911, an officer, and detectives. Deputy prosecuting attorney Matthew Thomas told jurors in closing: “He went for the gun because this isn’t about a relationship. This is about her threatening his cocaine and his money.” That was the prosecution’s argument, not a separate jury finding.

The defense’s account
Defense attorney Jared Ausserer argued that Mapp believed his home had been burglarized and perceived a gun at the closet. After the verdict, Ausserer said he was thankful jurors agreed it was self-defense, while acknowledging that the decision was theirs. His statements expressed the defense position and reaction; they do not establish the jury’s reasoning.
What does Washington law say about self-defense?
Washington’s RCW 9A.16.050 describes circumstances in which a homicide by someone other than a peace officer may be justifiable. Among them are lawful defense where there is reasonable ground to apprehend imminent danger of a felony or great personal injury, and actual resistance to an attempt to commit a felony in a dwelling or other place of abode.

The statute provides general legal context; it does not show which facts the jury accepted or reproduce the instructions given in Mapp’s trial.
Did the separate firearm case end with the murder acquittal?
No. Mapp pleaded guilty on March 11, 2026, to second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. The News Tribune reported that sentencing was scheduled for April 17, 2026, with a standard range of one to three months. That was the reported schedule and range, not confirmation of the eventual sentence; the report does not establish the later outcome.

Was Mapp awarded reimbursement?
Washington’s RCW 9A.16.110 provides for reimbursement of reasonable costs after a qualifying self-defense finding. A claim must be established by a preponderance of the evidence; the judge determines the amount and may deny or reduce it in certain circumstances, including related criminal conduct. The News Tribune reported that Mapp had the right to reimbursement, but did not report an amount set by the court. The statute does not establish that a particular payment was made.
