System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition was the project’s former name; the released game is titled System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster. What is the “Enhanced Edition”?
System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition was the announced name for the project. Nightdive now calls it System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster. In an Xbox Wire interview published March 20, 2025, Nightdive founder and CEO Stephen Kick explained the decision to remaster rather than remake: “Improved graphics, performance, and the ability to play on console — so it was decided to remaster the game instead of completely remaking it.”

That distinction matters: this is the same recognizable game from 1999, with changes to presentation, rendering, controls, interface and platform support. Nightdive developer Alex Lima described the work on legacy games as adapting old source code and reverse-engineering when source code is lost; developer Lexi Mayfield said the Dark Engine renderer had been modernized.

What changed in System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster?
Updated visuals and rendering
Nightdive lists high-resolution game and UI assets, modern materials and shaders, ambient occlusion, and a modernized Dark Engine renderer. These are presentation upgrades to the existing game, not evidence of a new game or a gameplay overhaul.

Platform-specific specifications should not be generalized across every edition. Xbox Wire says the Xbox One X and Xbox Series X|S versions run natively at 4K, with 120 Hz supported on Xbox Series X|S. Those resolution and refresh-rate details apply to the Xbox versions covered in that interview.
Controls and interface
The remaster adds controller support for console play and makes playability improvements. The official Nintendo UK Switch 2 listing specifically includes mouse controls and optimized controller support. Features and controls may differ by platform, so check the listing for the edition you plan to play.

Co-op and cross-play
Nightdive describes cross-play co-op as a remaster feature. Player-count details are platform-specific: Nintendo UK lists online play for two to four players on its Switch 2 edition. Do not assume that every platform has the same multiplayer options or player limit.
Mod support
Nightdive says support for the original modding community influenced the decision to remaster rather than remake the game. That is not a guarantee that every legacy mod or fan mission works with every version or patch. Check compatibility for the specific mod you want to use.

The original remains the choice for preserving the release experience; the 25th Anniversary Remaster is the practical default for players who want modernized presentation and features.
