Whether Syrian officials and Hezbollah representatives met in Türkiye remains disputed. Reuters reported on October 1, 2026, citing six sources, that a meeting took place in September. Syria’s Ministry of Information and Turkish authorities both denied the account. The available reporting does not independently establish that the meeting happened.

What Reuters reported—and what the governments said

Reuters reported that Syrian government representatives and Hezbollah held a meeting in Türkiye during September. Its account was based on six anonymous sources, which Reuters described as including two Syrian officials, a US official and a senior Lebanese security source close to Hezbollah. Al Jazeera’s report and Reuters’ report republished by Investing.com both outline that sourcing.

Syria’s Ministry of Information rejected the claim on its official X account, saying, as quoted by Al Jazeera, “claims are false. No such meeting took place”. Türkiye also denied the report. The Turkish Presidency’s Directorate of Communications Center for Countering Disinformation called claims of a meeting under the auspices of Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organization baseless, and said the reported details about its date, location, content and participants were fictional or speculative, according to Turkish Minute.

These are competing accounts: Reuters’ report rests on anonymous sources, while Damascus and Ankara deny that the meeting occurred. The available reporting does not settle the dispute.

What the reported talks were about

Reuters’ sources characterized the alleged meeting as an effort to reduce tensions. In Al Jazeera’s summary of the Reuters account, one Syrian official reportedly said Damascus assured Hezbollah it would not intervene militarily in Lebanon to disarm the group. Syrian officials were also said to have asked Hezbollah to help stop cross-border smuggling and dismantle remaining sleeper cells, particularly in southern Syria. These details are attributed to sources; they are not confirmed agreements.

What is not known about the meeting

Al Jazeera reported that Reuters could not confirm where in Türkiye the September meeting took place, how long it lasted, or whether other meetings occurred before or after it. A Lebanese source reportedly said contact through Türkiye began about two months earlier, but that account does not establish a series of meetings or formal relations.

Why the claim matters

The reported contact would involve former adversaries. Hezbollah fought for years to defend Bashar al-Assad’s government during Syria’s civil war. After Assad was ousted in late 2024, Syria’s new authorities accused Hezbollah of transferring arms through the country, according to Al Jazeera.

There had also been public indications that a meeting was possible: Al Jazeera reported that Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani said in July that Damascus was open to meeting Hezbollah, and that Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said in a televised address the following month that the group had no objection to meeting Syria’s leadership. Those statements provide context, but they do not verify the September meeting.

Does this establish a new relationship?

No. Even if the reported contact occurred, the account does not establish formal relations, an agreement or diplomatic normalization. Reuters’ sources described an alleged meeting and earlier contact; both governments deny the meeting itself. The claims should be kept distinct from confirmed policy or a settled arrangement.
