A synthetic child row has a foreign-key failure when its non-NULL key does not match a candidate or primary key in the referenced parent table. The reliable fix is to generate parent entities first, pass their actual generated keys to child generators, keep constraints enabled while validating, and repair only from the correct parent-key set. Empty parents, nullable columns, composite keys, type mismatches, cyclic relationships, and bulk loads with disabled checks each need a separate policy.
What a synthetic foreign-key failure means
A foreign key is a promise about two tables. For every child row, the value in the foreign-key column (or columns) must either be NULL, when the schema permits nulls, or equal an existing candidate key in the parent table. A primary key is always a candidate key; a table can also expose another unique, non-null key as the referenced target.

For example, a child table might contain orders.customer_id that references customers.customer_id. If an order has customer_id = 42 but no customer row has key 42, the row is an orphan. PostgreSQL’s tutorial illustrates the resulting failure with an error on the child table and a detail stating that the offending key is not present in the parent table. This is the database correctly enforcing referential integrity, not a random loader malfunction.
The same rule applies to composite foreign keys. If invoice_lines (invoice_id, line_no) references invoices (invoice_id, line_no), both values must match one parent tuple. Matching only one column is insufficient.

How dependency-aware synthetic generation should work
Build the schema dependency graph
Represent each table as a node and each foreign key as a directed edge from child to parent. A relationship such as payments.account_id to accounts.id means the account node must supply keys before payment rows can be produced. A generator that analyzes this graph can order independent tables in parallel while ensuring every parent precedes its dependents.
Generate and publish the parent-key pool
The parent generator must expose the keys it actually emitted, not merely the range it intended to use. Child generation then samples from that exact pool. This matters when keys are random, database-generated, filtered, sharded, or transformed during loading. Synthesized documentation describes this pattern: its TDK analyzes the schema, generates data in dependency order, and has the child foreign-key generator refer to the generated parent key.
Propagate mappings when keys are transformed
If a staging process changes an integer identifier into a UUID, prefixes a tenant code, or remaps IDs between environments, maintain an old-to-new mapping and apply it to every dependent column. Copying parent rows without remapping children creates the same orphan pattern as generating the tables independently.
The Tool Desk

For an acyclic graph, load root and parent fixtures first, then children, grandchildren, and so on. A topological sort gives a deterministic order. Keep the foreign-key constraints active in at least one validation environment so an invalid dependency is caught at the statement that introduces it.
Why synthetic child keys become invalid
Tables were generated independently
The most common design error is asking separate generators to invent values for both sides of a relationship. A child generator may produce plausible-looking IDs, but plausibility is irrelevant: the value must be a member of the parent key set. Independent random integers, copied examples from another fixture, and a hard-coded range all fail as soon as the parent set changes.
The pipeline used the wrong environment or seed
A child dataset generated against yesterday’s parent export can contain keys that do not exist in today’s export. The same happens when one stage uses a different tenant, database shard, locale, or random seed. Record the source environment, schema version, tenant scope, and seed for every generated artifact, and treat a parent-key pool as versioned input rather than as a global constant.
Parents were remapped without updating children
Migration tools often renumber rows, convert key types, or add tenant prefixes. If only the parent table is rewritten, every dependent foreign key still points at the old domain. Apply the mapping transitively through the dependency graph, including tables several levels below the original parent.

Children were loaded before parents
Even correct key values fail when the parent transaction has not committed or the parent rows have not been loaded. Parallel loaders need a barrier between dependency levels. In a single transaction, insert parents first; in separate transactions, wait for the parent commit and verify visibility before starting children.
The parent table is empty
An empty parent creates a deliberate policy decision. A nullable child foreign key may be generated as NULL; that means “no relationship,” not “a relationship to an unknown parent.” A non-nullable child key has no legal value while the parent is empty, so a dependency-aware generator should stop with a clear transformation error rather than inventing a sentinel ID. Choose one of these fixture policies explicitly:
- Seed a parent: create the minimum parent rows needed by the scenario.
- Generate no children: preserve the empty-parent state and set the child row count to zero.
- Allow NULL: use this only when the column is nullable and the test is meant to represent an unassigned relationship.
- Change the scenario: if the business case requires a relationship, an empty parent is not a valid fixture.
NULL was confused with an invalid key
SQL’s three-valued logic makes NULL different from a missing value such as 0 or an empty string. A foreign-key constraint normally permits NULL when the child column is nullable because no relationship is asserted. Do not “repair” allowed NULLs by replacing them with an arbitrary parent ID; that changes the scenario’s meaning.
Composite keys were only partially generated
For a composite relationship, generating each component independently can create combinations that never occur in the parent table. Generate and sample the complete tuple as one unit. A child with (country_code = 'US', account_no = 17) is valid only if that exact pair exists, even if the parent contains the US code and account 17 in different rows.

Data types or comparison rules differ
Values that look identical in a text editor may compare differently in the database. Check integer width, signed versus unsigned representation, decimal scale, UUID format, character encoding, collation, case sensitivity, and trailing whitespace. A string '42' and an integer 42 may be implicitly cast in one system and rejected or mismatched in another. Normalize types at the schema boundary instead of relying on implicit conversion.
Cyclic dependencies block a simple order
A cycle exists when table A references B and B references A, directly or through other tables. No topological order can satisfy the cycle by inserting all rows with final keys in one pass. SAP guidance recommends ordering tables where possible or deferring checks until commit for relationships that genuinely require a cycle. Redesigning the fixture graph to introduce a nullable link or a separate association table is often safer than disabling enforcement globally.
Bulk loading disabled enforcement
MySQL documents that setting foreign_key_checks off permits out-of-order reloads but also means the server ignores foreign-key enforcement during those operations. Similar bulk-load modes in other systems can leave latent orphans. Re-enabling the setting does not automatically prove that every existing row is valid; run explicit integrity queries before releasing the dataset.

Detect orphaned foreign keys systematically
1. Capture the first constraint error
In a validation environment, leave constraints enabled and record the constraint name, child table, column list, offending key, transaction, generator seed, and load step. The first failure usually identifies the earliest broken dependency; later errors may be consequences of that one defect.
Recommended Free Tools
2. Run an anti-join for every relationship
For a single-column relationship, return child values that are non-NULL and have no parent match:
SELECT c.fk
FROM child AS c
LEFT JOIN parent AS p ON p.pk = c.fk
WHERE c.fk IS NOT NULL
AND p.pk IS NULL;
To inspect the complete orphan rows, select the child table’s identifying columns instead of only c.fk. A zero-row result is the expected outcome.
3. Validate composite keys as tuples
SELECT c.order_id, c.line_no
FROM order_lines AS c
LEFT JOIN orders AS p
ON p.order_id = c.order_id
AND p.line_no = c.line_no
WHERE c.order_id IS NOT NULL
AND c.line_no IS NOT NULL
AND p.order_id IS NULL;
If the schema allows a partially NULL composite key, follow the database’s rule for that constraint and test those cases separately. Do not assume that one NULL component has the same semantics in every database configuration.
4. Compare key domains and cardinalities
- Count parent rows, child rows, and distinct foreign-key values.
- Compare minimum and maximum values only as a quick signal; ranges do not prove membership.
- Compare the distinct child-key set with the parent-key set using an anti-join or set difference.
- Check tenant, partition, and soft-delete filters so that a key hidden by a query is not mistaken for a missing parent.
5. Inspect representation before blaming generation
For suspicious pairs, display the database type, byte length, normalized text, collation, sign, and exact hexadecimal or UUID representation where supported. Trim or case-fold only if the business key is defined that way; silently normalizing a case-sensitive identifier can create a different key.
6. Audit the dependency graph and configuration
Verify that the generator discovered every foreign key, including constraints created after the original schema snapshot. Confirm that child generators received the current parent-key pool, used the same tenant scope, and consumed the intended seed and mapping file. A missing edge in the graph can make a pipeline appear ordered while still generating an invalid dependency.
7. Recheck after bulk loading
When constraints were disabled, run the anti-join suite after re-enabling them and before publishing the fixture. SAP documentation notes that systems enforcing integrity deny or roll back operations that violate the relationship; an explicit query suite provides the same assurance for data loaded outside normal enforcement.

Safe ways to repair invalid generated data
Rebuild child keys from the actual parent set
Extract the committed parent keys for the same environment and scope, then regenerate or update orphaned child rows by sampling only from that set. Preserve the intended distribution where possible—for example, keep tenant affinity or a realistic frequency of popular accounts—rather than assigning every orphan to the first available parent.
Restore missing parent fixtures
If the child row represents a valid business event and the parent was accidentally omitted, restore the parent with its original key and all required attributes. Insert it before the child, then validate every downstream relationship. Do not create a skeletal parent that violates other required columns merely to satisfy one foreign key.
Remove dependent rows when deletion is the scenario
If the test is meant to model a deleted customer, archived account, or purged order, remove or archive dependent fixtures according to the application’s rules. Leaving children that refer to a deliberately deleted parent produces an invalid database unless the schema uses a documented soft-delete or reassignment design.
Regenerate complete composite tuples
For a composite key, replace the entire tuple from a real parent row. Updating only one component can turn one orphan into another or accidentally attach the child to a different legitimate parent.
Normalize types and mappings at the boundary
Convert values before insertion using the same precision, signedness, encoding, and collation as the target columns. For cross-environment loads, apply a durable mapping table and make the transformation idempotent so rerunning the load cannot produce a second, inconsistent mapping.
Handle cycles with deferred validation, not permanent suppression
First ask whether the fixture can be redesigned to break the cycle. If the cycle is required, use a database-supported deferrable or commit-time constraint, insert rows in a documented sequence, and ensure every key is present before commit. Keep the deferred window as small as possible and fail the transaction if the final validation does not pass. Global, undocumented disabling of checks is not a repair strategy.

Foreign-key actions encode what should happen when a parent changes or is deleted. Microsoft documents these common choices:
Best Value
| Action | Effect on dependent rows | Use in synthetic scenarios |
|---|---|---|
NO ACTION |
Rejects the parent operation if dependents remain. | Use when retention is mandatory and deletion should fail. |
CASCADE |
Propagates the update or delete to children. | Use when dependents have no meaning without the parent and cascading deletion is part of the scenario. |
SET NULL |
Clears the child key. | Use only when the column is nullable and an unassigned relationship is valid. |
SET DEFAULT |
Replaces the key with its declared default. | Use only when the default identifies a real, valid parent and matches business semantics. |
Changing an action to hide a generator defect is unsafe. Configure it to model the lifecycle you are testing, then verify the resulting rows with the same integrity checks.
Validate every repair inside a transaction
- Begin a transaction or create an isolated validation copy.
- Apply the parent restoration, child regeneration, mapping, or deletion.
- Run all single-column and composite anti-joins.
- Run the database’s full constraint validation or equivalent check.
- Commit only if the checks pass; otherwise roll back and retain the failing key and seed for diagnosis.
Designing a generator that prevents failures
Use dependency levels
Compute a topological level for each table. Generate level-zero roots first, publish their key pools, and then process each subsequent level. Parallelize only tables whose ancestors are complete. For cycles, mark a strongly connected component and route it through a dedicated deferred-constraint procedure rather than pretending it is acyclic.
Make key pools explicit inputs
A child generator should receive a typed collection of permitted parent keys, including tenant or partition context. Reject an empty pool when the child column is non-nullable; return NULL only when the schema and scenario permit it. This turns an eventual database error into an actionable generator error.
Keep generation reproducible
Persist the schema fingerprint, dependency graph, random seed, row-count targets, parent-key snapshots, mapping version, and generator configuration with each dataset. Reproducibility lets a failing child key be regenerated exactly instead of disappearing after a new random run.
Validate at multiple boundaries
- Before generation: check that required parent pools and non-nullable relationships are feasible.
- After each table: check key uniqueness and type conformity.
- After each dependency level: run anti-joins for newly completed relationships.
- Before release: run the complete suite with constraints enabled, including relationships not exercised by the load path.
Comparing synthetic-data tools and pipelines
Choose a generator or build process by testing the failure modes that matter to your schema, not by judging the realism of isolated columns. Use the following comparison axes:
| Capability | Questions to ask | Evidence of a safe implementation |
|---|---|---|
| Dependency-aware generation | Does it inspect foreign keys and order tables automatically? | Parent keys are generated first and exposed to child generators. |
| Load-time enforcement | Are constraints active during normal loads? | The pipeline fails with the constraint name and offending key. |
| Empty-parent semantics | What happens when a required parent pool is empty? | It rejects non-nullable children or emits allowed NULLs according to policy. |
| Composite-key handling | Are tuples sampled as units? | Every child tuple is matched against a complete parent tuple. |
| Cycles and deferred checks | Can it document and control commit-time validation? | Cycles use a bounded, database-supported procedure rather than silent suppression. |
| Bulk-load controls | Can checks be disabled only for a named operation? | Re-enabling checks triggers an explicit post-load validation report. |
| Reproducibility | Are seeds, mappings, and schema versions retained? | The same inputs recreate the same key relationships. |
| Reporting | Does it list orphan counts and representative keys? | Reports identify table, constraint, key, and generation step. |
Documentation for dependency-aware products such as Synthesized TDK describes schema analysis and parent-first generation for very large databases with complicated primary-foreign-key relationships. Treat such claims as capabilities to verify against your own composite keys, cycles, empty-parent cases, and load controls.
Operational checklist before releasing a fixture
- Every non-NULL child key matches a visible parent candidate key in the same tenant and environment.
- Every composite foreign key matches as a complete tuple.
- Parent and child column types, signedness, precision, collation, and encoding agree.
- Parent-first ordering or a documented deferred-constraint procedure was used.
- Any disabled bulk-load checks were re-enabled before validation.
- Empty-parent behavior is intentional: seeded parent, zero children, or permitted NULLs.
- Referential actions match the lifecycle being tested.
- Seeds, schema fingerprint, key pools, mappings, and validation results are archived.
- All anti-joins return zero rows, and full constraint validation succeeds in a transaction.
Bottom line
Foreign-key failures in synthetic data are relationship-generation failures, not merely bad random values. Preserve the schema dependency graph, derive child keys from the exact parent rows that were generated, treat empty and cyclic dependencies as explicit fixture policies, and use constraints plus anti-joins as release gates. Repairs are safe only when they restore the intended relationship and business meaning rather than masking an orphan with an arbitrary identifier.
