Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShort answer: A synthetic cell is an engineered, cell-like system—not automatically a new form of life. Scientists can build compartments that express genes, perform limited metabolism, sense chemicals, move, communicate or deliver cargo. No one has yet assembled a fully autonomous cell from non-living parts that maintains itself, reproduces robustly and evolves as an integrated system. A living cell couples all of those functions through an evolved network.
That distinction also answers the safety question. “Synthetic cell” describes a wide continuum, so danger cannot be judged from the label alone. The relevant issues are the construct’s materials and genetic payload, whether it can persist or replicate, whether it exchanges material with living organisms, and where and how it is deployed.

What “synthetic cell” means
There is no single object called a synthetic cell. The National Academies treats the term as a continuum of engineered systems that share one or more cell-like features. At the simple end are membrane-bound compartments that perform one chemical reaction. More elaborate systems combine a boundary, genetic instructions, energy conversion, sensing and communication. Some contain no genome at all; others use DNA or RNA templates supplied by a researcher.

The terms artificial cell, synthetic cell, minimal cell and protocell overlap, but they are not exact synonyms in every paper. “Protocell” often refers to a model of an early or simplified cell, while “minimal cell” usually emphasizes a reduced set of components. “Artificial” and “synthetic” can describe either a wholly constructed compartment or a hybrid system that borrows parts from living organisms.

Examples of cell-like platforms include:
- Liposomes: spherical compartments made from lipid bilayers, the same basic material used in natural cell membranes.
- Polymersomes: vesicles formed from synthetic polymers that can be tougher or more chemically tunable than lipid vesicles.
- Proteinosomes: capsules assembled from protein-based building blocks.
- Coacervates: droplets formed by the phase separation of polymers or other molecules; they have an interior chemistry but no conventional membrane.
- Emulsion and colloid systems: droplets or particles that compartmentalize reactions.
- Cell-free systems: extracts or purified molecular mixtures that transcribe, translate or metabolize outside an intact cell.
- Genome-containing constructs: compartments supplied with DNA or RNA circuits that direct selected activities.
A lipid vesicle that makes a fluorescent protein and a genome-containing compartment designed to divide are therefore both discussed under the same umbrella, even though their capabilities and risks differ substantially.
What makes a living cell different?
A living cell is not merely a bag of chemicals or a collection of working modules. It is an evolved, self-maintaining system in which information, matter and energy flows are coupled. Its genome is copied and repaired; genes are regulated; metabolism supplies energy and building blocks; the boundary controls transport and signaling; damage is detected and repaired; and growth leads into reproduction. The system also responds to changing surroundings and can pass heritable variation through generations.
These capabilities reinforce one another. Metabolism supplies the energy needed to copy genetic information. Genetic information specifies the proteins and regulatory machinery that run metabolism. Membranes maintain the chemical gradients that power energy conversion and control what enters or leaves. Reproduction transmits the whole network, allowing natural selection to shape it over time. Removing one function can make the others dependent on external help.

A synthetic system may imitate one or several of these properties while lacking the integrated loop. For example, a vesicle can contain a transcription-and-translation mixture, but still require externally supplied energy, nucleotides or proteins. A compartment may grow when fed membrane material, yet have no genetic system that determines how growth becomes a viable daughter compartment.

| Biological feature | Synthetic cells | Living cells |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Designed and assembled from selected biological, chemical or hybrid components. | Descended from existing life and shaped by evolution over many generations. |
| Boundary | A designed lipid, polymer, protein or other compartment; some systems are droplets without a membrane. | A membrane integrated with transporters, receptors, structural elements and signaling machinery. |
| Information | May contain supplied DNA, RNA, gene circuits or templates; information is often incomplete or externally controlled. | A genome is coupled to replication, repair, gene expression and regulation. |
| Metabolism | Usually partial, cell-free or externally fed; pathways are selected for a particular task. | Integrated pathways continually generate energy and cellular building blocks. |
| Autonomy | Limited and task-specific; many systems depend on laboratory feeding or conditions. | Broad self-maintenance and environmental response within the organism’s life cycle. |
| Reproduction | Growth or division-like behavior can be demonstrated in restricted systems; robust autonomous reproduction remains unsolved. | Reproduction is part of the organism’s normal life cycle and transmits its integrated genome. |

| Interaction | Can be programmed to sense, communicate, move or deliver cargo to living cells. | Participates naturally in tissues, organisms and ecosystems. |
| Risk | Depends on materials, payload, persistence, exchange with organisms, containment and deployment. | Assessed through established biosafety frameworks, with additional concerns for engineered living organisms. |
How synthetic cells are assembled
1. Build a boundary
Researchers first create a compartment that separates an interior reaction from its surroundings. Lipid vesicles most closely resemble natural membranes, while polymersomes and protein-based shells offer different stability and permeability. The boundary can be engineered with pores, transport proteins or chemical triggers so that selected molecules enter or leave.
Boundary design determines whether a system can maintain a chemical gradient, protect a fragile reaction, or communicate with another cell. A compartment that leaks freely cannot sustain many energy-producing reactions. A compartment that is too impermeable cannot obtain feedstock or remove waste without an external intervention.
2. Add information
DNA or RNA can encode a sensor, a fluorescent reporter, an enzyme or a regulatory circuit. In cell-free systems, the template is read by molecular machinery supplied in an extract or purified mixture. In more advanced constructs, multiple circuits are coordinated so that an input triggers a defined output.

This is not equivalent to a complete genome. A template can specify one product while relying on externally provided polymerases, ribosomes, amino acids, nucleotides and energy molecules. A natural genome is embedded in a self-repairing information system that controls its own copying and expression.
3. Supply energy and metabolism
Some synthetic cells use externally added ATP, sugars or other energy-rich compounds. Others include a limited pathway that converts a substrate into usable energy. A few systems combine several reactions to regenerate energy internally, but these pathways generally cover a narrow task rather than the full network needed for indefinite maintenance.
Metabolic integration is one of the hardest design problems. Energy production, membrane maintenance, waste removal, biosynthesis and information processing all compete for resources. A system that performs well for minutes or hours under controlled laboratory conditions may not remain functional when the feedstock, temperature, pH or oxygen level changes.
4. Program sensing, movement and communication
Recent synthetic-cell goals include detecting molecules, changing behavior in response to a signal, moving through a fluid and exchanging messages with neighboring compartments. DNA-based systems in liposomes, polymersomes, colloids and emulsions have been used as platforms for these functions, according to a 2024 review in Nature Reviews Chemistry.
These capabilities can be useful without making the construct alive. A vesicle that releases a payload when it encounters a chemical marker is a programmable delivery device; it does not necessarily maintain itself, reproduce or evolve.
Are synthetic cells alive?
There is no universally accepted single test for life, so the answer depends on which capabilities are present and how they are coupled. A compartment that has a membrane and performs metabolism may be described as “life-like.” A construct that contains genetic information may be called “cell-like.” Neither description proves that it is a living organism.
The strongest practical distinction is autonomy. A living cell normally obtains resources, maintains its internal state, repairs damage, regulates gene expression and produces new cells using its own integrated machinery. Current synthetic systems can reproduce selected functions, but they still depend on supplied components, carefully controlled conditions or both.

The 2024 review in ACS Synthetic Biology states: “Despite the astonishing technologies developed to modify living cells, building a functioning cell ‘from scratch’ has yet to be accomplished.” That conclusion refers specifically to a functioning cell assembled from non-living molecular parts, not to engineered living cells or cell-free systems that borrow machinery from existing organisms.
Can synthetic cells reproduce?
Growth is not the same as reproduction
A vesicle can become larger when additional membrane material is supplied. A droplet can split when it is agitated. A compartment can copy a DNA template if the copying machinery and raw materials are added from outside. Each is a useful demonstration, but none by itself establishes autonomous reproduction.
For reproduction, a system must coordinate several events: duplicate heritable information, grow the boundary, distribute information and essential contents, divide, and produce daughters that can repeat the cycle. The daughters must also obtain energy and materials without a researcher rebuilding the system after every generation.
Why robust autonomous replication remains difficult
Natural cells solve a tightly coupled engineering problem. They replicate genomes while correcting errors, synthesize membranes and proteins, control timing, divide at the right size and recover from damage. A synthetic system may perform one step efficiently but fail when all steps must occur together. Resource competition, membrane instability, genetic errors and waste accumulation can stop the cycle.
A European Commission review concluded that sophisticated artificial cells with robust self-replication were not yet available. Protocells can interact intimately with living cells even when they are not alive, so interaction should not be confused with independent reproduction.

Evolution requires three ingredients operating together: heritable information, variation and differential success. A synthetic compartment could, in principle, meet those conditions if it copies an information system, introduces inheritable differences and allows some variants to persist or reproduce more effectively than others.
Most current systems do not complete that loop. Their templates are supplied externally, their operating conditions are fixed, or their compartments cannot produce viable descendants. Demonstrating a chemical reaction that changes over time is not the same as showing open-ended evolution. Evolution becomes a meaningful possibility only when the system controls enough of its own replication and resource use for selection to act across generations.

Why scientists build synthetic cells
Constructing a cell-like system lets researchers isolate problems that are difficult to study inside a full organism. A compartment can be simplified, observed and modified one component at a time. The same control makes synthetic cells attractive for practical applications.
Controlled biochemical production
Compartmentalized reactions can manufacture a selected molecule while keeping incompatible chemistry separate. Because the system is designed for a narrow output, it may be easier to tune than a whole organism.
Drug delivery and medical sensing
Engineered vesicles can carry cargo and release it in response to a chemical or physical cue. A sensor-and-response circuit could, for example, detect a marker and trigger release. The medical value depends on stability, targeting, dose control, clearance and the ability to prevent unintended interactions with tissues.
Origin-of-life studies
Protocells provide experimental models for asking how compartments, information molecules and metabolism might have become coupled on early Earth. They do not recreate a historical sequence automatically, but they allow individual steps to be tested under controlled conditions.
Programmable materials and environmental sensing
Cell-like compartments could be embedded in materials that change color, release a chemical or report a local condition. NIST identifies sensing and triggered responses as possible scientific and medical uses.
Communication with living cells
Synthetic systems can be designed to recognize molecules on living cells, exchange signals or deliver cargo. This interaction is one reason the boundary between “nonliving tool” and “biological participant” matters for safety assessment.

Are synthetic cells dangerous?
There is no single danger level for all synthetic cells. A sealed vesicle used in a laboratory assay has a different risk profile from a persistent, genome-containing construct intended for release. The architecture, payload and setting must be assessed together.
Best Value
Questions that determine risk
- What is it made of? Lipids, polymers, proteins, nucleic acids and inorganic materials have different persistence and toxicity profiles.
- What does it carry? A harmless reporter, a drug, an active enzyme and a genetic circuit create different consequences if released.
- Can it persist? Consider stability outside the intended vessel, resistance to degradation and the availability of nutrients.
- Can it replicate or amplify? Most current systems cannot reproduce independently, but any claimed growth or division capability must be characterized under realistic conditions.
- Can it exchange material with living cells? Fusion, uptake, membrane contact or delivery of nucleic acids could create effects even without replication.
- Where will it be used? A contained microfluidic experiment, a patient, an industrial reactor and an open ecosystem present different exposure routes.
- Could it be repurposed? Components that are safe in one design might be combined into a more capable system, so access, documentation and controls matter.
- Can existing oversight identify it? Inconsistent terminology can make it unclear whether a construct falls under chemical, biological, medical-device, gene-technology or environmental rules.
Interaction can matter even without life
A non-replicating protocell could still bind to a cell, deliver a molecule, alter a local chemical environment or trigger an immune response. “Not alive” therefore does not mean “harmless.” Conversely, a construct that cannot survive outside a controlled medium may pose little environmental persistence risk even if it performs sophisticated chemistry in the laboratory.
Why terminology complicates governance
The National Academies notes that inconsistent use of “synthetic cell” creates challenges for risk scoping, regulation, funding and public communication. Regulators and institutions need a functional description: materials, genetic content, containment, exposure route, persistence, replication potential and intended use. A label alone is not a hazard assessment.
How synthetic-cell work is governed
Responsible evaluation should begin before construction and continue through testing, transport, use and disposal. A practical review asks:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Define the system precisely. Record the compartment type, contents, energy source, triggers, expected lifetime and whether any living cells or biological extracts are used.
- Identify plausible exposure routes. Include laboratory workers, patients, manufacturing staff, waste streams and the surrounding environment.
- Test persistence and degradation. Measure what happens when feedstock is removed or temperature, pH and salinity change.
- Test exchange with living cells. Determine whether the construct fuses, is taken up, transfers nucleic acids or changes cell behavior.
- Assess replication claims conservatively. Distinguish researcher-fed growth or splitting from autonomous production of viable daughters.
- Build containment and fail-safes. Use physical containment, dependence on supplied nutrients, degradation triggers or other barriers appropriate to the design.
- Match oversight to the deployment. Clinical, industrial and environmental applications require different approvals, monitoring and incident-response plans.
- Communicate capabilities and limits clearly. State what the construct can do, what it cannot do and under which conditions those statements were tested.
This approach also helps avoid two opposite mistakes: treating every synthetic cell as a dangerous organism, or assuming that a nonliving label eliminates biological risk.
How close are scientists to building life from scratch?
Scientists can combine more functions than ever before. Current platforms demonstrate compartmentalization, gene expression, selected metabolic pathways, sensing, movement and communication. Reviews in Nature Reviews Chemistry and Biophysics and Physicobiology describe progress toward DNA-based systems and minimal cells that coordinate several of these features.
The unsolved step is integration. A fully functioning cell built from non-living parts would need to maintain itself, manage energy and materials, regulate information, repair damage, grow, divide and produce descendants that repeat the process. Those capabilities would have to work together without continuous external assembly or feeding.
Robust autonomous self-replication remains a major milestone rather than an achieved capability. That is why it is accurate to describe today’s systems as engineered cell-like platforms, protocells or minimal systems, while reserving claims of newly created life for a much higher standard of integrated autonomy.
Quick Recap
What to remember when reading claims about “artificial life”
- Ask which function was demonstrated: a membrane, a reaction, gene expression, sensing, movement, growth, division or full reproduction.
- Check what was supplied from outside, including energy, enzymes, templates, membrane material and nutrients.
- Separate a single successful cycle from repeated autonomous generations.
- Look for evidence of heredity, variation and selection before assuming evolution.
- Evaluate risk from the specific payload, persistence, exchange with living cells and deployment setting—not from the word “synthetic.”
- Remember that a system can be useful and biologically interactive without being alive.
