Syngenta has begun formal consultation on a proposal to cease operations at its Grangemouth site, putting 377 jobs at risk, according to October 2026 coverage. The same coverage says the company received more than £2 million in Scottish Enterprise funding a little over a year earlier. The grant’s exact purpose and conditions have not been established, so it is not confirmed that the money was awarded to protect these jobs.
What has Syngenta proposed?
Syngenta, a chemical manufacturer, is consulting on a proposal to stop operating at its Grangemouth facility. The reported figure of 377 jobs is the number at risk under that proposal; it is not a confirmed count of redundancies already made. A proposal under consultation is not a completed closure, and the outcome was not established in the October 2026 coverage.
What is known about the Scottish Enterprise funding?
October 2026 coverage reports that Syngenta received more than £2 million from Scottish Enterprise a little over a year before the closure proposal became news. The precise award amount, date, project scope, conditions and any employment commitments have not been confirmed in the available information. It therefore does not establish that the grant was specifically intended to guarantee the 377 jobs, or whether any repayment condition would apply if the site closes.
Which Grangemouth operations and funding are separate?
Grangemouth is home to distinct industrial operations. Syngenta’s chemical site is not the Petroineos oil refinery or the INEOS ethylene plant. Government announcements about those facilities and other planned projects provide context for the area’s industrial transition, but they do not show that Syngenta’s consultation has been reversed or that its grant was tied to a job guarantee.

| Company or project | Facility or purpose | Funding or jobs reported | Status and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Syngenta | Chemical operation at Grangemouth | More than £2 million in Scottish Enterprise funding; 377 jobs at risk | October 2026 coverage reports the funding and a consultation on a proposed cessation of operations. Exact grant terms and consultation outcome are not established. |
| Petroineos | Grangemouth oil refinery | UK Government said Petroineos reported losses exceeding $775 million since 2011 and more than $1.2 billion invested to maintain safe operations | In September 2024, Petroineos confirmed it would cease refining from the second quarter of 2025. The figures concern the refinery, not Syngenta. |
| Project Willow | Potential future industrial uses at Grangemouth | £200 million UK support through the National Wealth Fund and a £25 million Scottish Government Just Transition Fund | Nine potential options were published in March 2025, including plastics recycling and hydrogen production. The announced support and options are not proof that specific projects are operating. |
| MiAlgae and Celtic Renewables | Separate projects in the wider Grangemouth area | Scottish Government announced £1.5 million for MiAlgae and £6.23 million for Celtic Renewables; forecasts were up to 310 jobs at MiAlgae over five years and up to 149 Celtic Renewables roles by 2030 | Job figures are forecasts, not confirmed completed employment, and the projects have no demonstrated connection to Syngenta’s grant. |
| INEOS | Grangemouth ethylene plant | Separate £150 million joint UK Government–INEOS package announced in December 2025 to maintain the plant and protect 500 jobs | This support concerns ethylene production, not Syngenta or the refinery’s cessation. |
How does the Syngenta proposal fit the wider transition?
The refinery decision prompted plans for worker support and possible new industrial activity, but those measures address the wider area rather than Syngenta’s specific proposal. The Scottish Government’s 2025 Industrial Just Transition Plan described up to £33 million for the plan and £2.8 million of a £5 million total commitment for an INEOS fuel-switching project. These commitments, Project Willow’s options and the separate project announcements do not establish replacement jobs for Syngenta staff.
The distinction matters when reading headlines about public money and jobs: announcements may concern different employers, facilities, projects and timeframes. The 500 jobs associated with the 2025 ethylene-plant package, for example, are separate from the 377 Syngenta jobs reported at risk.

What remains unclear?
- The original Scottish Enterprise award record, including its exact amount, award date and project scope.
- Whether the award included job-retention obligations, repayment provisions or any other closure-related conditions.
- The result and timetable of Syngenta’s formal consultation, and whether the proposal will proceed.
Until those details are confirmed, the defensible account is that Syngenta has proposed ceasing its Grangemouth operation in a consultation reported to put 377 jobs at risk, after receiving a reported Scottish Enterprise award of more than £2 million whose terms are not established.
