The 20 kg Synergee Open Barbell is a full-length, 28 mm Olympic-style bar with 50 mm sleeves and four ball bearings, positioned by the manufacturer for CrossFit and Olympic-style lifting. Its listed capacity is 1,000 lb, but Synergee recommends a different bar for powerlifting. The available evidence here is manufacturer specifications and customer feedback—not an independent performance test.
What the 20 kg Open Barbell is
Synergee sells the Open Barbell in 15 kg and 20 kg variants. This review concerns the 20 kg version; its dimensions and capacity should not be conflated with the lighter variant or Synergee’s separate Regional bar.

Is it a good bar for Olympic lifts?
For a lifter seeking a 20 kg bar for Olympic-style training or CrossFit, the Open’s listed 28 mm shaft, 50 mm sleeves and bearing construction align with the product’s stated purpose. Synergee says, “We made our Open Barbell especially for CrossFit,” and describes its whip as moderate. Those are the manufacturer’s intended-use claims, not independent findings about how the bar behaves under a particular lift or load.

The four bearings are a design detail, not proof that the bar spins too freely—or that its rotation, whip or feel will suit every lifter. A preference for more or less sleeve rotation is individual; no exact-model test establishing spin speed or lifting feel is available here.
Where Synergee draws the line on use
Synergee recommends its Rhino bar for powerlifting and characterizes that model as engineered for aggressive lifting. This is the company’s product-fit guidance; it does not establish that the Open cannot be used for any powerlifting routine. For frequent heavy drops, overhead work or commercial-gym use, Synergee’s older comparison article favors its Regional or Games bars over the Open. Treat that as manufacturer positioning and confirm current guidance directly.

The Regional is a separate model. Synergee lists its 20 kg Regional bearing bar at 1,500 lb capacity and 190,000 PSI tensile strength; those figures do not apply to the Open. What customer reviews can—and cannot—tell you
Target’s page showed a 4.9/5 rating from 194 reviews when accessed in 2026. Customer excerpts praised build quality, knurling, sleeve spin, versatility and value. Target labels its summary as AI-generated from customer feedback and notes that some reviews may be incentivized. Price and availability can change, so check the live listing for the selected 20 kg variant, current stock and shipping before buying. No warranty terms are established here; confirm coverage and support directly with the seller.
Before choosing a bar, match its shaft and sleeve dimensions to the plates you own, check the bar’s weight and knurl marks against your lifting needs, and consider how often your training involves dropping loaded lifts. The Open’s 50 mm sleeves call for plates and collars compatible with that sleeve size. Compare stated capacity and intended use without treating either as a substitute for evidence on long-term durability.
