Sync.com is a strong choice for privacy-focused cloud storage, file sharing, backup, Vault and team workspaces. Its core storage is end-to-end encrypted by default, but recovery and some optional features reduce the strictness of its zero-knowledge model. The free plan provides 5 GB, accounts support five active devices, and canceling a paid account can lead to permanent deletion after 30 days. Whether Sync is right for you depends less on headline encryption claims than on how you handle recovery, large files, collaboration and compliance.
What Sync.com is
Sync provides cloud storage and file-sharing applications for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and the web. Sync’s product materials describe shared folders with permissions, branded client portals, Vault storage, CloudFiles integration in Windows Explorer and Mac Finder, camera uploads, backup and version restoration. These are vendor-described capabilities; your available options can vary by plan and account settings.
A company SOC 3 report dated December 31, 2024 says Sync had over 2.7 million users in more than 180 countries as of 2023. That is a company-reported figure, not an independent current market estimate.

Privacy and encryption: strong defaults, but read the exceptions
Core storage is E2EE by default
Sync’s Terms state: “Sync’s core storage service is end-to-end encrypted (“E2EE”) by default.” In practical terms, files are encrypted before leaving your device and remain encrypted in Sync’s storage. Sync’s Free-plan documentation says the free account has the same underlying E2EE and zero-knowledge protection as paid accounts, along with two-factor authentication and file version history.
These are contractual and vendor statements, not proof that every feature or workflow has been independently audited. Sync’s SOC 3 report is an additional assurance document, but its scope should not be treated as validation of every marketing claim.
Optional processing can change the protection model
Sync’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Service explain that selected optional features may require temporary server-side processing of particular files, content or metadata. Processing is described as limited to what the chosen feature needs, but it means that content is not protected exclusively by client-side encryption for that operation.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
The Terms advise: “If you wish to maximize client-side encryption protections for eligible content, You should disable any features that require server-side processing.” Disabling one can make it unavailable or reduce its functionality. Review the Privacy Center and account settings rather than assuming every optional feature is enabled or disabled by default.

When email-based password reset is enabled, Sync stores an encrypted copy of your private encryption key in escrow on an isolated server. Sync says that, while this feature is enabled, the account is not configured on a strictly zero-knowledge basis because it retains the technical ability to help recover access. Its Terms put it this way: “As such, while Your Data remain encrypted before it leaves Your device and while stored by Sync, You acknowledge that, when this feature is enabled, Your Account is not configured on a strictly zero-knowledge basis, as Sync must retain the technical ability to assist in recovering access to Your Account by using the escrow key.”
Turning recovery off deletes the escrowed key, but Sync says it then cannot recover the account if you forget the password. Some plans may require the feature or prevent it from being disabled. Decide whether account recoverability or the strictest zero-knowledge configuration matters more to you.

Free plan, device limits and cancellation
- Storage: 5 GB.
- Apps and features: desktop and mobile apps, web panel, Vault, CloudFiles, Camera Uploads and file version history, according to Sync’s Free-plan help article.
- Active devices: up to five computers or mobile devices per account.
- Shared links: Free Starter links allow up to 20 downloads per day per link.
A paid account cannot simply be downgraded back to Free. Sync says canceling a paid subscription closes the account, pauses syncing and stops shared links. Files are retained for 30 days for possible reactivation, then permanently deleted. Treat cancellation as a data-migration event: download or move anything you need before canceling.
New plan purchases have a 30-day money-back guarantee; Sync says this does not apply to renewals or upgrades. Renewal prices can change, with notice by email at least 30 days before renewal.
Plans and pricing: verify the live selector
No current official plan prices were verified for this review. A Tom’s Guide comparison published May 6, 2026 lists prices it observed, but its table pairs “Solo 5TB” with 2 TB, an internal inconsistency that makes it unsuitable as a definitive current price list. Check Sync’s live plan selector before subscribing and confirm whether the displayed amount is monthly, annual, promotional or a renewal price.

File transfers and everyday performance
Use the desktop app for large files
Sync’s general-limits guidance says desktop and mobile apps can transfer files of any size, although desktop performance may slow for individual files above 40 GB. The web panel can degrade above 500 MB per file. Sync recommends its desktop app for large transfers because it can resume partial transfers.
Actual speed depends on your connection, peering, file size, client, encryption overhead and the number of files. Tom’s Guide reports a personal test of a 5 GB folder taking about 10 minutes to upload and 12 minutes to download; those times reflect that reviewer’s setup and are not a guarantee.
Sharing limits differ by plan
Free Starter shared links allow up to 20 downloads per day per link. Sync says Pro customers can share with unlimited downloads and no monthly transfer limit, subject to account storage. If a public link is part of your workflow, check the plan’s current abuse, storage and access controls.
Best Value
- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
Backup, version history and collaboration
Sync combines synchronized folders with Vault for files you do not want mirrored locally, CloudFiles placeholders in Finder or Explorer, camera uploads and file-version restoration. Shared folders and permissions support ordinary collaboration, while branded portals target client-facing file delivery.
Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison identifies extended file history and security as strengths, but describes the interface as basic, notes single-folder sync and finds third-party integrations limited. That assessment is useful context for buyers who expect a broad productivity ecosystem rather than a privacy-first storage service.
HIPAA: eligible plans are not a compliance guarantee
Sync says HIPAA support is included with Pro Solo 5 TB, Pro Solo Professional 6 TB, Pro Solo Unlimited and all Pro Teams plans. A business associate agreement (BAA) is signed on request after purchasing one of those plans. See the HIPAA-eligible plan guidance.
Plan eligibility and a BAA do not transfer your compliance responsibilities to Sync. The covered entity still must ensure protected health information is shared only with legally entitled people and that access is managed appropriately. Validate your complete workflow, permissions, retention and incident procedures with your compliance advisers.
Who should choose Sync.com?
Good fit
- You want encrypted cloud storage and sharing as the primary goal.
- You can manage a five-device limit.
- You value version history, Vault and recoverable file versions.
- You are prepared to decide between email recovery and stricter zero-knowledge settings.
- You need a HIPAA-eligible plan and will manage the rest of your compliance program.
Look elsewhere or test first
- You need broad third-party integrations or a highly polished collaborative office suite.
- You routinely move individual files above 500 MB through a browser.
- You require more than five active devices without account administration.
- You cannot tolerate the possibility of account closure and deletion after a 30-day post-cancellation retention period.
- You need current pricing certainty without checking a live plan page.
How Sync compares on the factors that matter
| Factor | Sync.com position | Buyer implication |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy | E2EE by default for core storage; optional server processing and recovery escrow are exceptions | Inspect feature settings and choose your recovery model |
| Storage and price | Free tier is 5 GB; paid pricing is volatile and must be checked live | Compare total annual cost, not only promotional monthly figures |
| Devices and sync | Five active computers or mobile devices; desktop app handles large transfers better | Count every device and plan browser use for files above 500 MB |
| Sharing | Free links have a 20-download daily limit; Pro removes that stated limit | High-volume public sharing may require Pro |
| History and recovery | Version history is available on Free; cancellation retains files for 30 days | Export data before canceling and verify retention details for your plan |
| Integrations | CloudFiles and portals are available; independent review found third-party integration limited | Test your required apps before migrating a team |
| Compliance | HIPAA-eligible plans and BAA process | Customer remains responsible for lawful PHI handling |
Verdict
Sync.com is one of the more privacy-oriented mainstream storage choices, especially for people who need encrypted file sharing, Vault, version history and a straightforward desktop workflow. Its limitations are consequential: only 5 GB free, five active devices, browser slowdowns on larger files, fewer integrations than productivity-first competitors, and a recovery setting that can make the account no longer strictly zero-knowledge. Choose it when those trade-offs fit your threat model and workflow; otherwise, test a competitor whose collaboration, device or recovery model better matches your priorities.
