Switzerland Visa Types for Indian Nationals: Tourist, Work, Study and Family

For Indian nationals, the right Swiss visa depends first on the purpose and length of the stay. Short tourism and visits generally use a Schengen C visa, while stays longer than 90 days usually require a national D visa and, for work or family reunification, the relevant Swiss authorization as well. A visa is not itself permission to take a job or reside in Switzerland indefinitely.

Which Swiss visa route fits your trip?

Indian nationals require a visa for both short stays and stays longer than 90 days, according to the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) nationality table, version 3 April 2026. The table below is a starting point, not a substitute for the current India-specific checklist: the precise route and documents depend on the case.

Purpose Usual duration and visa route Separate decision or authorization Where to check case-specific requirements
Tourism or visiting family and friends Short stay: Schengen C visa, up to 90 days in any 180-day period No general work permission comes with a visitor visa Swiss representation’s current short-stay checklist; evidence of trip purpose, finances and insurance
Employment Route depends on the work category and duration; an entry visa may be required Work authorization is separate from the visa and involves the competent Swiss canton or employment authority Employer and canton process, plus the current Embassy of Switzerland in India work guidance
Study More than 90 days: national D visa; shorter study may fall under C depending on circumstances For a long stay, the competent canton decides the application before the representation can issue the visa Current India student checklist and the relevant canton’s requirements
Family reunification More than three months: national-visa procedure, generally using the D route The relevant cantonal migration office handles the residence authorization Current family-reunification checklist, sponsor’s canton instructions and any applicable language requirements

Tourism, family visits and other short stays

Schengen C visa: the short-stay route

The C visa covers stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The limit is calculated across the Schengen area, not as a fresh 90 days for each country. Tourism and visits to family or friends are among the listed purposes. A C visa is valid across the Schengen area unless the visa itself restricts its validity.

What to prepare for a visit

Applicants should be ready to explain the purpose and circumstances of the trip and demonstrate adequate funds for the stay and return or onward journey. Swiss entry conditions also include a recognized travel document and admissibility requirements relating to public order and relevant information systems. SEM’s visa FAQ lists medical insurance among the requirements for visa-required applicants.

Do not assume an invitation letter is always required: Swiss authorities say one may be requested for a family or friend visit. Follow the current Swiss representation checklist for India for the documents, appointment channel, fee and any invitation or sponsorship evidence required in the individual case.

Working in Switzerland

A visa does not authorize employment

Anyone entering Switzerland to pursue gainful employment must have both the applicable visa and work authorization, according to SEM. A job offer alone does not establish that authorization has been granted. The employer and competent Swiss cantonal authority are involved in the authorization process; the exact route varies with the job and work category.

India-specific work application guidance

For an India-based applicant seeking an entry visa for work, the Embassy of Switzerland in India’s general list includes cantonal authorization, a long-stay D application, a valid passport, a recent photograph and visa fees. Use the Embassy’s current work guidance and confirm with the employer and canton which authorization applies before filing.

The Embassy’s instructions for stays not exceeding 90 days and its separate checklist for work permits up to 120 days address distinct administrative contexts. They are not a single rule that lets an applicant choose either duration for the same job; confirm which procedure applies to the particular employment arrangement.

Studying in Switzerland

Courses and stays of different lengths

For study lasting more than 90 days, the usual route is a national D visa application using the Embassy’s dedicated student checklist. SEM also includes attending school or studying among the possible short-stay C-visa purposes, so a shorter study visit may use the C route depending on its circumstances. Check the representation’s instructions rather than choosing a category based on duration alone.

How long-stay student decisions are made

The Embassy of Switzerland in India says national-visa applications are forwarded to the competent cantonal authorities for a decision, and the representation can issue the visa only after approval. Its current student checklist is the authority for supporting documents such as admission evidence, financial proof, education records, translations and appointment requirements; these details are not established as a universal list for every institution or canton.

Joining family in Switzerland

National-visa procedure and sponsor information

Family reunification for a stay exceeding three months is handled through a national-visa procedure. India’s Embassy publishes a dedicated family-reunification checklist and identifies the relevant canton’s migration office as the authority competent for authorization. Depending on the case, the checklist may require information about the person in Switzerland, including a copy of that person’s Swiss residence or work permit.

Eligibility depends on the case

A relationship label by itself does not establish eligibility. The sponsor’s status, the relationship, the applicant’s circumstances, the canton and possible language requirements can affect the decision and documents. Check the current Embassy checklist and canton instructions, including the separate official material on proof of language skills where it applies.

How the Swiss application and decision process works

Choose the correct form and authority

SEM sets federal entry and visa rules but does not issue visas; Swiss representations abroad handle issuance and refusal. The SEM distinguishes the Schengen form for short stays from the national D form for long-term stays over three months that are subject to authorization, including employment and family reunification. For long-stay applications described by the India Embassy, the representation forwards the case to the competent canton, then issues the visa after the necessary approval.

  1. Identify purpose and duration. Decide whether the trip is a visit, employment, study or family reunification, and establish the intended dates and activity.
  2. Check the relevant India-specific checklist. Use the current Embassy of Switzerland in India checklist for that purpose, not a generic document list. Confirm the current form, fee, appointment and submission instructions.
  3. Confirm any cantonal authorization. For work, study or family cases requiring a long-stay decision, identify the competent canton and follow its process. For employment, coordinate with the employer.
  4. Submit the application and supporting evidence as instructed. Requirements such as translations, financial evidence, insurance and sponsor documentation can vary by route and case.
  5. Allow time for a decision and visa issuance. Do not make non-refundable plans based on an assumed decision date; the Embassy’s indicative national-visa estimate is not a guarantee.

Processing time and details to verify before filing

The Embassy of Switzerland in India’s national-visa page, published 19 January 2026, gives an approximate processing estimate of 8–12 weeks and cautions that timing can vary considerably depending on the canton and application details. Treat this as an operational estimate, not a service guarantee. The source does not establish a comparable approval rate by visa type.

  • Confirm that you are using the latest checklist for the correct purpose and duration.
  • Verify the appointment channel, submission location, current fee, photograph specifications and translation rules directly with the Swiss representation in India.
  • For long stays, confirm which canton is responsible and what it requires for the underlying authorization.
  • For visits, check the applicable insurance criteria and whether invitation or sponsorship documents are requested.
  • For employment, distinguish the work authorization process from the entry-visa application and clarify which work-duration procedure applies.
