Switch emulation reaches Xbox Series X—and some games run surprisingly well

Yes, an Xbox Series X can now run Nintendo Switch games through experimental UWP emulator ports. Results vary sharply by title: eden-xbox reports stable 60 frames per second (FPS) in several lighter games after shader compilation, while Breath of the Wild runs around 20 FPS and Tears of the Kingdom reaches the console’s app-memory ceiling. This is still a developer project, not a polished replacement for a Switch.

What “good” means on Xbox Series X

Switch emulation on Series X is no longer purely theoretical. Two experimental projects, eden-xbox and NXbox, run in Xbox Developer Mode using Universal Windows Platform (UWP) builds. Their results show that the console has enough CPU and GPU capability to deliver console-like performance in selected games, but compatibility remains highly title-dependent.

eden-xbox is the stronger result so far. Its maintainers report stable 60 FPS in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Strikers: Battle League and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! on retail Series X hardware after shaders are compiled. Super Mario Bros. Wonder reportedly holds between 55 and 60 FPS. Large open-world games expose the remaining limits: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is about 20 FPS in eden-xbox, while Tears of the Kingdom renders but hits a 5,120 MiB Xbox app-memory wall.

NXbox is less mature. Its maintainer reports Breath of the Wild at roughly 5–10 FPS and says no game is fully playable without bugs. Persona 5 Royal reaches its first playable area with audio, but still stutters and has serious problems.

Reported performance by game

Game eden-xbox NXbox
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Stable 60 FPS in races; no graphical errors reported Not stated by the maintainer
Mario Strikers: Battle League Stable 60 FPS in matches Not stated by the maintainer
Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! Stable 60 FPS Not stated by the maintainer
Super Mario Bros. Wonder 55–60 FPS, reported as stable Not stated by the maintainer
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild About 20 FPS in the open world About 5–10 FPS
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Renders, then reaches the 5,120 MiB app-memory limit Not stated by the maintainer
Persona 5 Royal Not stated by the maintainer First playable area with audio; stutter and serious bugs remain

These are maintainer-reported figures from retail Xbox Series X consoles in Developer Mode, not standardized laboratory benchmarks. They should be treated as snapshots of active development. In particular, a 60 FPS result normally assumes that the game’s shaders have already been compiled; first launches can stutter while that work happens.

How the Xbox ports work

eden-xbox

eden-xbox is a UWP rebuild of Eden with a native Direct3D 12 renderer. Switch ARM code is translated at runtime with Dynarmic’s just-in-time (JIT) engine. Native D3D12 reduces the translation layers between the emulator and Xbox graphics hardware, which helps explain its stronger results in several games.

NXbox

NXbox takes a different route: it exposes OpenGL 4.6 through a patched Mesa D3D12 driver, while also using Dynarmic for ARM-code translation. That approach is functional but currently shows much lower performance in the published Breath of the Wild result and more visible bugs in playable titles.

Input and shader caches

The Xbox controller is mapped as a Switch Pro Controller. Both projects use shader or pipeline caches so repeated launches do not have to recompile every shader, although the first run can still hitch. Cache behavior is therefore part of the performance story, not just a loading detail.

What you need to try it

  • An Xbox Series X configured for Xbox Developer Mode.
  • The project’s UWP build, which you must build and sign yourself for eden-xbox because it describes itself as a work in progress rather than a released package.
  • Access to the Xbox Device Portal for installing and managing the development app.
  • Your own legally obtained Switch game dump in .nsp, .nsz or .xci format.
  • Your own compatible Switch firmware files and decryption keys.

The projects do not bundle games, firmware or keys. Do not download or share copyrighted dumps or system files. Copyright and circumvention rules differ by jurisdiction; a February 2026 report from Windows Central notes that legal disputes have generally focused on distributing copyrighted material or monetizing access to emulator content.

Basic installation workflow

  1. Activate Xbox Developer Mode on the Series X and reboot into that mode.
  2. Open the console’s Device Portal from a computer on the same network.
  3. Build and sign the chosen emulator UWP project according to its documentation.
  4. Upload and install the signed package through Device Portal.
  5. Place your own game files, firmware and keys where the emulator’s configuration expects them.
  6. Launch a game, allow initial shader compilation to finish, then test performance again from a clean run.

Because these are development builds, package formats, signing requirements and file paths can change. A failed install does not necessarily indicate a hardware problem; it can mean the package was not signed for the console, the build is outdated, or a required runtime file is missing.

The practical limits

Memory budget

UWP applications have a hard memory budget. eden-xbox’s reported 5,120 MiB limit is enough to stop Tears of the Kingdom after it begins rendering, even though the Series X has substantially more physical system memory. An emulator cannot simply use all of the console’s RAM when the application sandbox imposes a lower ceiling.

CPU and renderer pressure

Open-world games demand more emulation work, draw-call handling and shader activity than compact or well-optimized titles. The gap between 60 FPS in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and roughly 20 FPS in Breath of the Wild is therefore a compatibility and workload difference, not evidence that every Switch game will run at one fixed speed.

Development status

eden-xbox explicitly calls itself a development fork and says it has no published packages. NXbox’s maintainer describes it as experimental and says no game is yet 100% playable without bugs. Expect regressions, missing features, crashes and changing setup instructions.

Should you buy a Series X for Switch emulation?

No—not if your main goal is guaranteed access to the Switch library. The console is a capable experimental host, and the reported 60 FPS results are impressive, but demanding games can be slow or blocked by memory limits. Developer Mode, self-built software and legally sourced system files also make this a technical project rather than a plug-and-play feature.

If you already own a Series X and enjoy emulator development, the results justify experimenting with compatible games. If you want consistent performance, automatic updates and full library coverage, an original Switch remains the predictable option.
