Some businesses accept euros, but they do not have to, and any change is returned in francs. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, according to Switzerland Tourism, though your card issuer may charge foreign-transaction or ATM fees.
Why Swiss francs are the safer choice
The Swiss franc is Switzerland’s legal currency. The Federal Finance Administration defines the franc as the country’s currency; legal tender includes banknotes, coins and sight deposits at the Swiss National Bank. For everyday travel purchases, that means CHF is the dependable cash option.

Euro cash is different: it may be accepted when a merchant agrees to take it, but it is not Switzerland’s domestic currency. Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs explains that a price in euros can be paid if both parties to the transaction agree. A shop, restaurant or other business can therefore decline euros.
When can you pay in euros?
Some businesses do accept euro cash. Switzerland Tourism says major department stores and many shops, businesses, hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops accept it. That is a practical option in some places, not a guarantee that every merchant will take euros or that the exchange calculation will be favorable.

Using a card instead of cash
Switzerland Tourism describes credit and debit cards as accepted almost everywhere. It lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Maestro, and also mentions Apple Pay and Google Pay. Card acceptance is convenient, but it does not establish what a particular card will cost you: your issuer may charge foreign-transaction fees, and ATM withdrawals may carry separate charges.
