Suunto Wing Review: Open-Ear Design, Battery Claims and Real-World Trade-Offs

The Suunto Wing is a lightweight, open-ear bone-conduction headset for sport, with integrated red LEDs and gesture controls. Its design lets ambient sound reach your ears, and a hands-on review found it comfortable with useful controls. The main trade-off is sound: Cycling Weekly’s reviewer found it less crisp and lacking some depth compared with alternatives. Suunto’s battery figures are manufacturer claims; the reviewer did not test the full ten-hour playback claim.

What the Suunto Wing is—and what open-ear listening means

The Wing uses bone conduction: it sits against the jawbone and leaves the ear canal open. Suunto says this lets you listen to music while still hearing your surroundings. That is a design characteristic, not a guarantee of safety; awareness can vary with volume, environment and attention.

This makes the Wing most relevant to people who want music or calls during outdoor exercise without sealing their ears. It is not a conventional in-ear or over-ear listening experience, and the open design does not make it a substitute for traffic awareness or required safety equipment.

Fit, controls and visibility

Lightweight construction and water resistance

Suunto lists the Wing at 33 g and rates it IP67 for water resistance. Those are product specifications, not a claim that the headphones are suitable for every water activity or that they are indestructible.

SUUNTO WING - Open ear, bone conduction headphones. Made for sports, waterproof, safety lights, bluetooth
  • BONE CONDUCTION HEADPHONES - The Suunto Wing headphones use bone conduction technology, which leaves the ear canal free to safely hear surrounding sounds while still providing the same sound quality of normal over-ear headphones. Normal level of sound leakage.
  • LIGHT & EASY TO WEAR - At only 32g, the headphones are light and can be worn with bike helmets, hats & beanies. One-size-fits-all. Comfortable fit yet snug enough to allow for use in rough terrain and during demanding sports. Waterproof for use in all weather conditions.
  • CLEAR VOICE CALLS - The dual microphone uses Clear Voice Capture (cVc) technology to ensure clear calls even in windy environments or on the move. Stay hands-free by answering or hanging up calls with head movement controls.
  • SAFETY LIGHTS - For added safety, the headphones have bright LED lights that can be set to different light modes from within the Suunto App
  • BLUETOOTH COMPATIBLE - Suunto Wing headphones are easy to connect to any Bluetooth enabled device

Head gestures

The Wing supports head-movement controls. Cycling Weekly’s reviewer found the gestures useful for answering or declining calls and skipping tracks, though gesture controls may not suit everyone’s preferences or movements.

Integrated LEDs

Red LEDs are built into the headset to improve visibility. They can be an additional visibility feature, but they do not guarantee that other road users will see you and should not replace appropriate lights, reflective gear or safe behavior.

How long does the Suunto Wing battery last?

Suunto advertises up to 10 hours of music-only playback under its stated test conditions of 60% volume and SBC audio. It also lists at least 30 hours of music playback when used with the powerbank, describing the accessory as providing up to 20 additional hours. Treat these as manufacturer figures, not a runtime guaranteed for every listening pattern.

Suunto lists at least four hours of music playback with the LEDs in constant-light mode and at least eight hours with head-movement control enabled. The product page does not establish how those figures combine with one another in a single use scenario. Cycling Weekly’s June 9, 2026 review lists the claimed ten-hour battery time, but its reviewer explicitly says they did not test the full ten-hour playback claim.

How does the Suunto Wing sound?

Bone-conduction headphones prioritize an open-ear fit, which is a different listening trade-off from headphones that seal or cover the ears. In its hands-on review, Cycling Weekly’s reviewer found the Wing’s sound less crisp than some competing headphones and said it lacked some depth. Those are subjective review impressions, not a measured comparison across every competing model.

Who should consider the Suunto Wing?

  • Consider it if you want a lightweight bone-conduction headset that leaves your ears open, plus integrated visibility lights and head-gesture controls.
  • Weigh the trade-off if sound clarity and depth matter more to you than an open-ear design; one reviewer found the Wing less crisp than alternatives.
  • Check the battery expectations if you need a verified runtime for long sessions. The ten-hour figure is Suunto’s claim, and the reviewed test did not verify it.
  • Check the specific listing if you expect a charging powerbank to be included, since bundle and regional configurations should be confirmed before purchase.

Verdict

The Suunto Wing is a focused sports headset rather than an all-purpose sound upgrade: its strongest case is the combination of open-ear bone conduction, a 33 g listed weight, gesture controls and integrated red LEDs. It is a less straightforward choice if you prioritize rich, crisp sound or need independently confirmed battery endurance. For outdoor exercise, the open design can keep ambient sound audible, but it cannot ensure safety.
