Choose Suunto Smart Heart Rate Belt if your watch and apps are Bluetooth-only and you value short-term store-and-forward memory. Choose Garmin HRM-Dual when you need both ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy for a mix of watches, bike computers, phones, Zwift-style apps or gym equipment. Neither published battery figure is a like-for-like laboratory result: Suunto quotes approximately 500 operating hours, while Garmin quotes up to 3.5 years based on one hour of use per day.

The deciding questions are therefore practical: which wireless protocol your devices accept, whether you need the belt to remember data while the watch is out of range, how many Bluetooth connections must be active at once, and whether you are prepared to replace both the coin cell and the textile strap over time.

The short answer: which belt fits your setup?

Suunto Smart Heart Rate Belt is the simpler choice for a Bluetooth Smart training setup. Suunto specifies Bluetooth Smart transmission, heart-rate and heart-rate-variability (HRV) measurement, approximately 500 hours from a replaceable CR2025 battery, 30 metres of water resistance, and 3.5 hours of stored measurement data when used with a compatible Suunto watch.

Garmin HRM-Dual is the more flexible choice when your equipment may use either wireless standard. It transmits live heart rate over ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy, supports HRV, and permits two concurrent Bluetooth Low Energy connections. That combination can accommodate a watch plus a phone app, or a compatible watch plus fitness equipment, provided each device supports the relevant protocol.

#1 Best Overall
Garmin HRM 200 Heart Rate Monitor, M-XL
  • The HRM 200 heart rate monitor transmits accurate real-time heart rate and heart rate variability data to compatible Garmin smartwatches and cycling computers, fitness equipment, and apps
  • Comfortable strap is available in two sizes (XS–S and M–XL) for the most ideal fit for your body type
  • Up to 1 year of battery life with a user-replaceable battery
  • Durable and built to last with a 3 ATM water rating
  • Machine washable for easy cleaning

These are not accuracy-test results. No controlled, independent head-to-head test establishes that one belt reads heart rate better than the other. The evidence supports a compatibility and ownership decision, not a universal accuracy winner.

What the two heart-rate monitors actually transmit

Suunto Smart Heart Rate Belt: Bluetooth Smart first

The Suunto belt is built around Bluetooth Smart. A watch, phone or training machine must therefore expose a compatible Bluetooth heart-rate sensor profile. A Suunto watch’s sensor instructions explicitly require a Bluetooth Smart-compatible sensor; an ANT+-only receiver cannot pair with this belt.

The belt measures beat-to-beat information used for HRV as well as ordinary heart rate. Its R-R memory can retain measurements when the watch is not within Bluetooth radio range. With a compatible Suunto watch, Suunto specifies up to 3.5 hours of stored and forwarded measurement data at 120 beats per minute. The watch must reconnect later to receive that data, so this is a backup for temporary loss of contact rather than a replacement for a full standalone workout recorder.

Garmin HRM-Dual: ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy

Garmin HRM-Dual sends real-time heart rate through both ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy. ANT+ remains common in sports watches, cycling computers, treadmills and other training equipment, while Bluetooth is the usual choice for phones, tablets and modern indoor-training applications. Having both radios does not make every device compatible: the receiving device still has to support the profile and, in some cases, the required protocol version.

Garmin specifies HRV support and two simultaneous Bluetooth Low Energy connections. That matters when two Bluetooth receivers must see the same belt at once, such as a phone running a training app and a Bluetooth-capable display. A third receiver may require ANT+, a different pairing arrangement or a bridge device.

Battery life: why the numbers cannot be ranked directly

Suunto’s approximately 500-hour figure

Suunto rates the Smart Heart Rate Belt at approximately 500 hours from its replaceable CR2025 cell. That is an operating-hours figure. It does not say how many calendar years the battery will last for a user who trains irregularly, leaves the transmitter attached to the strap, or stores the belt in a warm or cold environment.

Garmin’s 3.5-year estimate

Garmin rates HRM-Dual at up to 3.5 years when it is used for one hour per day. This is a usage assumption expressed in calendar time, not a direct total-hours rating. A person training more than one hour daily, leaving the transmitter active, or using the belt in conditions that increase drain may see a different result.

How to make a sensible ownership estimate

Count your actual transmitting time rather than comparing “500 hours” with “3.5 years” as if they were measured under identical conditions. Record the date of each battery change and the approximate weekly training time. Replace the cell when sessions show dropouts, the receiver reports a low battery, or the transmitter no longer wakes reliably; do not wait for a major event to discover a depleted battery.

Both ratings are manufacturer specifications, not a controlled battery head-to-head. Battery chemistry, temperature, radio use, storage and the age of the cell can all affect the result. The Garmin estimate also includes a daily-use assumption that Suunto’s figure does not state.

Memory and what happens when the watch loses contact

Suunto documents a specific offline workflow. If the compatible Suunto watch is outside Bluetooth range, the belt can keep R-R measurements in memory and forward up to 3.5 hours of data when the connection returns. This is useful during activities where the watch is temporarily removed, shielded by equipment or separated from the chest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The stored-data statement is qualified in two ways: it applies with a compatible Suunto watch, and the cited capacity is described at 120 beats per minute. Do not assume that every Bluetooth app can retrieve the memory or that the belt stores an unlimited workout file.

Garmin HRM-Dual is specified as a live ANT+ and Bluetooth transmitter. The supplied specifications do not establish an onboard workout-memory capacity for this model. If you need a belt that records a complete session without a watch or phone, check the documentation for a model that explicitly names internal recording; do not infer that capability from HRV support or dual-protocol transmission.

Compatibility by training scenario

Suunto watch

Pair the Suunto belt through the watch’s sensor settings and select a heart-rate sensor that supports Bluetooth Smart. The watch should display a live heart-rate value before you start recording. If the watch offers both wrist and external heart-rate choices, select the external sensor for the session.

When the watch temporarily loses contact, keep wearing the belt and let it reconnect later. The stored-and-forwarded feature depends on a compatible Suunto watch; it is not a general Bluetooth history service for every receiver.

Garmin watch

A Garmin watch may receive the HRM-Dual through ANT+ or Bluetooth, depending on the watch generation and its sensor menu. Select the protocol the watch supports and avoid adding the same belt twice unless the watch clearly identifies separate connections. If pairing fails, move away from other active sensors and check whether the watch is searching for ANT+ while the belt is already reserved by a Bluetooth device.

Phone, tablet or indoor-training app

Bluetooth is normally the practical route for a phone or tablet. Suunto can work where the app accepts a Bluetooth heart-rate sensor. Garmin can also work over Bluetooth, and its two-connection allowance can let two compatible Bluetooth receivers subscribe simultaneously. App support is decisive: an app that only accepts power meters, or only scans a proprietary accessory list, will not become compatible merely because the belt broadcasts Bluetooth.

Zwift-style cycling and running applications

Check the application’s heart-rate sensor menu and operating-system permissions first. Pair the belt inside the app rather than only in the phone’s system Bluetooth page when the app’s instructions require in-app pairing. Garmin’s ANT+ option is useful only when the computer, phone adapter or bridge actually supports ANT+; a Bluetooth-only tablet cannot receive ANT+ directly.

Gym machines and treadmills

Look for an ANT+ heart-rate icon, a Bluetooth heart-rate option or a manual that names external chest straps. Garmin’s dual protocol gives it more possible paths, but the machine still has to implement a compatible receiver. Suunto is appropriate when the equipment explicitly accepts Bluetooth Smart heart-rate sensors. Gym consoles often remember an old pairing, so remove the old sensor entry before trying again.

Bike computers and other sports devices

Match the computer’s protocol before buying. An ANT+-only cycling computer cannot use the Bluetooth-only Suunto belt without an additional bridge, while a Bluetooth-only computer cannot use Garmin’s ANT+ signal unless it also accepts Bluetooth. If the computer supports both, choose the protocol that leaves the other radio free for your phone or watch.

Pairing and first-use checklist

Prepare either belt

  1. Moisten the strap electrodes according to the strap’s care instructions and fasten it firmly around the chest, with the transmitter centered as directed by the manufacturer.
  2. Install a fresh, correctly specified coin cell if the transmitter does not wake. Match the polarity marks and close the cover evenly so the seal is seated.
  3. Turn off or move away from other heart-rate transmitters during first pairing. Multiple nearby belts can make the receiver select the wrong sensor.
  4. Open the receiving watch, app or equipment’s sensor menu and start a heart-rate search. Pair from that menu instead of assuming that a generic phone Bluetooth page completes the training profile.
  5. Start a short test activity and confirm a stable live value before relying on the belt for a long workout.

Suunto-specific checks

  1. Confirm that the receiving watch or app explicitly supports Bluetooth Smart heart-rate sensors.
  2. Pair the Smart Heart Rate Belt in the watch’s external-sensor settings.
  3. For an activity where temporary loss of contact is possible, verify that the watch is a compatible Suunto model capable of using the belt’s stored R-R data.
  4. After the activity, allow the watch to reconnect before ending the session if you want stored measurements forwarded.

Garmin-specific checks

  1. Decide whether the receiver will use ANT+ or Bluetooth Low Energy. Use ANT+ for an ANT+-only sports device and Bluetooth for a phone or app that requires it.
  2. When two Bluetooth receivers are needed, pair each from its own sensor menu and confirm both show a live value.
  3. If a Garmin watch offers an existing wrist-heart-rate source, set the chest strap as the preferred external sensor for the workout.
  4. Test the complete chain—belt, watch or app, and any gym or cycling display—before beginning a session where missing data would matter.

Maintenance, battery changes and strap replacement

Coin-cell replacement

Both products use replaceable batteries, so ownership includes periodic cell changes rather than a disposable transmitter. Suunto specifies a CR2025 cell. For Garmin HRM-Dual, use the exact cell type printed in the transmitter documentation or on the battery compartment; replacement listings may mention CR2025 or CR2032, and those cells are not interchangeable simply because they look similar.

Keep the transmitter dry while opening the compartment, inspect the gasket, install the cell with the marked polarity facing the indicated direction, and close the cover without pinching the seal. After replacement, perform a live pairing test. Dispose of used coin cells through the appropriate local recycling or household hazardous-waste channel, and keep them away from children.

Textile strap care

The textile strap is a consumable component separate from the electronic transmitter. Sweat, salt, detergent residue and repeated stretching can reduce electrode contact even when the battery is fresh. Rinse the strap after workouts, follow the manufacturer’s washing limits, let it dry fully, and avoid storing the transmitter snapped onto a damp strap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace the strap when the elastic no longer holds the sensor firmly, the electrodes show persistent readings problems after cleaning, the fastening system is damaged, or the fabric develops an odor that washing cannot remove. Check that a replacement strap is intended for the same transmitter attachment and electrode layout.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to do
No sensor appears during pairing Dead cell, dry electrodes, wrong protocol or another receiver already connected Moisten and refit the strap, replace the cell if needed, select the correct ANT+/Bluetooth search and move away from other transmitters.
Pairs but shows no heart rate Poor skin contact, loose strap or damaged/dirty electrodes Position the strap correctly, tighten it, wet the electrodes and clean or replace the textile strap.
One device works and the second does not The receiver limit or protocol does not match the setup With HRM-Dual, verify that both are Bluetooth Low Energy receivers and that no third Bluetooth connection is being attempted. Otherwise use ANT+ for a compatible device.
Data disappears when the watch is out of range The receiver cannot use belt memory, or the belt is not paired to a compatible Suunto watch For Suunto’s memory feature, reconnect the compatible watch and allow forwarding. Do not expect generic apps to retrieve the stored session.
Readings drop out during exercise Low battery, dry or worn strap, radio interference or an overly loose fit Replace the cell, wet the electrodes, refit or replace the strap, and test with other nearby wireless sensors turned off.
Gym equipment cannot find the belt The console supports a different protocol or has a stale pairing record Check the console manual for Bluetooth Smart or ANT+ support, remove its old sensor record and pair again at close range.

Which one should you buy?

Choose Suunto Smart Heart Rate Belt when

  • Your watch, phone and training equipment all accept Bluetooth Smart heart-rate sensors.
  • You use a compatible Suunto watch and value up to 3.5 hours of stored-and-forwarded R-R data during temporary Bluetooth gaps.
  • You prefer a straightforward Bluetooth-only setup and do not need ANT+ for an older bike computer or gym console.
  • The approximately 500-hour published battery rating fits your replacement schedule.

Choose Garmin HRM-Dual when

  • You need ANT+ for one device and Bluetooth Low Energy for another.
  • You want up to two concurrent Bluetooth Low Energy connections.
  • Your training ecosystem includes mixed-generation watches, cycling computers, phones or compatible fitness equipment.
  • You prefer Garmin’s published calendar estimate of up to 3.5 years at one hour of use per day, while recognizing that your actual result will vary.

Consider a different class of monitor when

  • You need a complete standalone workout recording and the product documentation does not explicitly provide onboard memory.
  • Your required device accepts neither Bluetooth Smart nor ANT+ heart-rate profiles.
  • You need advanced running or cycling dynamics that are not listed for these basic live-transmission models. Confirm the metric list for the exact sensor before purchasing.

Final verdict

Suunto Smart Heart Rate Belt is the better fit for a Bluetooth-first setup, especially when temporary out-of-range recording with a compatible Suunto watch matters. Garmin HRM-Dual is the safer choice for mixed equipment because ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy cover more connection patterns, including two simultaneous Bluetooth receivers.

Battery life does not produce a clean winner: Suunto’s approximately 500 hours and Garmin’s up to 3.5 years at one hour per day describe different assumptions. Decide from your receiver protocols first, then weigh memory, connection count and the practical cost of replacement cells and straps.
