The Suunto Race S is a compact, map-capable sports watch; Garmin’s Forerunner line is a family, so the right comparison depends on the model. For a running-focused example, the Forerunner 265 offers training and recovery features but no built-in maps in Garmin’s comparison. The Forerunner 965 adds built-in mapping and multisport features. Choose among them based on fit, navigation needs, training tools, battery expectations and the watch ecosystem you prefer—not a blanket verdict about every Forerunner.
Which watches are being compared?
This comparison focuses on the Suunto Race S and two specific Garmin options: Forerunner 265 and Forerunner 965. Garmin’s current comparison pages also list newer Forerunner 570 and 970 models, so check the generation and availability in your region before buying. The features below do not establish which model or size is best for every runner.

Forerunner 265: running tools without built-in maps
Garmin’s comparison lists multi-band GPS for the Forerunner 265 but not built-in mapping. That distinction matters if you want maps on the watch rather than running-oriented GPS features alone.

It also lists running power from the wrist or with a Stryd sensor.

How should you interpret battery estimates?
Battery figures below come from manufacturers and use different modes and conditions. They are not standardized head-to-head results, so do not treat one as proof of a same-course winner.
| Watch | Manufacturer estimate | Conditions or mode |
|---|---|---|
| Suunto Race S | Up to 30 hours | Performance mode with multi-band GNSS; Suunto product page accessed in 2026 |
| Suunto Race S | Up to 40 hours | All-Systems GNSS with single band; Suunto product page accessed in 2026 |
| Suunto Race S | Up to 120 hours | Tour mode, with lower GPS accuracy and heart rate off; Suunto product page accessed in 2026 |
| Suunto Race S | Up to 9 days with daily heart rate on; up to 13 days with it off | Smartwatch estimates; Suunto product page accessed in 2026 |
| Garmin Forerunner 265 | Up to 20 hours GPS; up to 13 days smartwatch mode | Garmin estimate in its March 2, 2023 announcement; actual use and settings affect battery life |
| Garmin Forerunner 965 | Up to 31 hours GPS; up to 23 days smartwatch mode | Garmin estimate in its March 2, 2023 announcement; actual use and settings affect battery life |
The Race S’s longest quoted activity figure is specifically for Tour mode, which sacrifices GPS accuracy and turns heart rate off. For a realistic expectation, match the estimate to the mode and sensors you plan to use. Garmin’s announcement gives GPS and smartwatch figures, but those figures should not be compared as if they were measured using Suunto’s Performance or Tour modes. Garmin’s March 2, 2023 announcement
