How much did independent artists earn in 2025?
Ditto Music’s The Independent Music Report 2026 found that 74% of surveyed artists earned less than $1,000 from music in the prior year, 2025. The report gathered responses from 5,039 artists living in 112 countries. Its largest respondent markets were the United States (1,180), the United Kingdom (1,003) and South Africa (929).
The sample matters: respondents came through Ditto’s artist community and channels, and every respondent had released music with Ditto. The finding therefore describes this group of active Ditto users; it should not be read as a precise estimate for all independent artists.
Unless otherwise specified, the report’s percentages use all 5,039 respondents. Some follow-up questions were optional or conditional, so their denominator may be smaller; questions allowing multiple selections may add up to more than 100%.

Can independent musicians make a living from music?
The survey points to a gap between making music and relying on it for a living. Ditto reported that 64% of respondents worked a full- or part-time job outside music, while 22% said music was their full-time job. Only 29% believed their music income would be sustainable for the next three years.
These figures describe respondents’ work and expectations, not a measure of what every artist earns or a forecast of future income. They do, however, show why a low annual music-income figure can coexist with people continuing to release music: many respondents had other work alongside their music careers.

Why can releasing music be easier than earning from it?
Digital distribution and online platforms can reduce barriers to releasing music and reaching listeners. But access does not guarantee discovery, a paying audience, or enough revenue to cover an artist’s costs. Ditto CEO and co-founder Matt Parsons summarized the tension: “Independent artists have unprecedented access to audiences, technology and global distribution, but turning that access into a sustainable career remains a major challenge.”
The survey documents respondents’ experiences and beliefs; it does not establish that easier distribution causes low earnings, or that any particular service or platform will improve an artist’s income.

How do respondents find new audiences?
Social video featured prominently in artists’ reported discovery and promotion habits. Ditto said 67% identified social-video platforms as a source of new audiences, while 86% said they create social content to promote their music. These are separate survey responses: they do not prove that posting content will bring a particular artist new listeners or income.
The report also discusses streaming and playlist discovery, but the figures available here do not provide a directly comparable percentage for playlist discovery. The social-video results should therefore be treated as evidence of reported use and perceived discovery, not a platform-by-platform comparison of effectiveness.

What does the survey say about touring?
Touring costs were a substantial barrier: 82% of respondents said they could not currently afford the expenses of going on tour. That response indicates perceived affordability, not that all respondents had tried touring or that touring would necessarily be profitable for them.
Live performance can be part of an artist’s work, but the survey finding highlights the upfront costs that may prevent artists from touring. It does not quantify tour income or show whether touring improves overall earnings.

How are independent artists using AI?
Ditto reported that 47% of respondents already used AI in their music-making process. Common reported uses included mixing, mastering and vocal tuning. Use differed by age group: 74% among respondents over 55, compared with 24% among those aged 18 to 24.
These percentages describe reported AI use in the age groups named by the report; they do not show why artists use AI or whether it improves quality, audience reach or income.
What the findings do—and do not—show
- They show: In Ditto Music’s 2026 survey, most respondents reported less than $1,000 in music income for 2025, alongside widespread outside employment and low confidence in income sustainability.
- They also show: Respondents reported significant touring-cost barriers and frequent use of social content, as well as adoption of AI tools in music-making.
- They do not show: A representative income distribution for all independent artists, a causal link between release access and earnings, or proof that a particular tool, platform or distribution service will make an artist more money.
The clearest conclusion is about the difference between access and sustainability: releasing music may be more accessible, but this survey’s Ditto-recruited respondents still described limited music income and practical barriers to building a career around it.
