The right surround speakers for a TV depend on whether you want a compact soundbar package or a more flexible system built around an AV receiver. Before choosing, check what speakers are included, whether rear speakers work with your exact soundbar or TV, and how you will power and connect everything. This guide explains the main options and how to match one to your room and equipment.
Which type of TV surround system should you choose?
There are two main ways to build surround sound for a TV: a soundbar-based system or an AV receiver with separate speakers. Dolby describes both approaches in its home theater setup guide.

| Option | What it involves | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soundbar system | A soundbar, often with a subwoofer; some packages include rear satellite speakers, and some bars support compatible add-on surrounds. | People who want a relatively compact, straightforward TV audio system. | Expansion and speaker placement depend on the soundbar and its supported accessories. |
| AV receiver and separate speakers | An AV receiver routes audio and video and powers a set of separate speakers and a subwoofer. | People with space for multiple components who want more choice over speakers and system layout. | Requires more planning, connections, room space, and typically speaker wire. |
Neither architecture is automatically the better choice. Decide how much room you have, how visible cables can be, whether you want discrete rear or height speakers, and whether you prefer a system that can be expanded component by component.

Channel notation describes a system’s speaker layout. In Dolby’s explanation, the first number counts ear-level speakers, the second counts subwoofers, and a third number, when present, counts height speakers. A 5.1 system has five main speakers and one subwoofer; a 5.1.2 system adds two height speakers. See Dolby’s Atmos speaker setup guide for the configuration explanation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not treat a larger channel number as a guarantee of better sound. Check whether the package actually includes the speakers represented by its layout, whether the system supports the formats you intend to use, and whether your room can accommodate the speakers.

- Confirm whether rear speakers and a subwoofer are included or sold separately.
- Check the stated channel layout and whether height channels are physical speakers, upward-firing drivers, or not part of the package.
- Verify supported connections and audio formats on both the TV and the sound system.

- Review power requirements and placement options before choosing wireless rear speakers.
Will wireless rear speakers work with your TV or soundbar?
“Wireless” does not necessarily mean that speakers need no power cable, work with every TV, or pair with every soundbar. Wireless products can rely on a specific transmitter, app, or compatible hub, and may still need access to a power outlet. Confirm the connection method, supported models, required accessories, and what is included in the box using the manufacturer’s instructions.

LG says its Sound Suite products support different combinations of speakers and soundbar or subwoofer components. Direct connection of M5 or M7 speakers to a TV depends on Dolby Atmos FlexConnect support on specified LG TV models. LG says its H7 Soundbar can enable that feature with unsupported TVs or TVs from other brands. These statements apply to the named LG products and supported models, not to wireless speakers generally. Check LG’s Sound Suite information for current model details.

Klipsch identifies its Surround 3 speakers as compatible with selected Klipsch soundbars, naming Cinema 600, Cinema 800, and BAR 48 on the product page. The page describes a pre-paired USB transmitter and tabletop or wall-mount placement. Treat these as examples of a system-specific add-on: verify compatibility and current availability for your particular bar on the Klipsch Surround 3 page.
How to check connections before buying
Trace the whole audio path, from the content source through the TV to the sound system. A connection that fits physically does not by itself confirm that the devices support the audio formats you want.

- Check the TV and system ports. Confirm which HDMI ports support ARC or eARC, if relevant, and whether the devices also support the connection options you plan to use, such as optical audio.
- Check format support at both ends. Compare the TV, soundbar or receiver, and source device specifications. For Dolby Atmos, confirm that the source or content path and playback equipment support it; the word “surround” alone does not establish Atmos support.
- Confirm the source-device route. Decide whether the source connects to the TV or directly to the receiver or soundbar, and check that the chosen route passes the formats you need.
- Use the cable specification required by your models. Dolby’s setup guidance discusses HDMI and speaker-wire needs. Sony notes that cable capability can matter for high-quality formats over eARC in its HDMI cable support guidance. Follow the TV and audio-system manufacturers’ specifications rather than assuming one cable rule fits every setup.
Where should surround speakers go?
Place surround speakers to the side of or behind the listening position, following the system maker’s guidance for the model and room. Dolby advises positioning main speakers around seated ear height; stands can help when furniture or the room layout makes that difficult. Wall mounting can reduce placement flexibility, so choose the position with the final seating arrangement in mind.

- HDMI cable: Choose one that meets the requirements of the connected TV and audio equipment, particularly when using eARC or higher-quality audio formats.
- Cable-management accessories: Can make a wired setup tidier, but should not constrain the speaker placement you need.
Buy accessories only after settling on the system and checking its connection and placement requirements. Dolby’s home theater setup guide discusses equipment and connection needs.
