Is Windscribe Free enough for everyday use?
It can be enough for occasional browsing, checking a VPN connection, or other light use, but the monthly ceiling makes it a poor fit for someone who expects to route a lot of video or downloads through a VPN. Windscribe says the free plan uses shared free servers and is not throttled; that does not remove its data limit.

What the free data allowance means
- 2 GB per month: available after creating a free account without adding an email address.
- 10 GB per month: available when an email address is added, according to Windscribe’s official page.
- 10 countries: the locations Windscribe lists for Free.
Windscribe’s FAQ says, “You need a free account to use Windscribe, but you don’t need to give an email. Create a username and password and you’re on, with 2 GB a month. Add an email later to bump it to 10 GB.” That is Windscribe’s own description, not an independent assessment. Which service costs less for the term you want?
Compare the amount due for the whole term, not only the advertised monthly equivalent. In Surfshark’s comparison dated May 7, 2026, Starter is listed at $2.49/month for two years, $3.39/month for one year, and $16.45 for monthly billing. The same comparison lists Windscribe Pro at $5.75/month when paid annually and $9 for monthly billing. Windscribe’s own page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists Pro at $69 per year or $9 per month, plus Build-A-Plan at $1 per location per month with a $3 minimum. When Surfshark’s price makes sense
The lowest Surfshark figure in the cited comparison is tied to a two-year commitment. It may suit you if you already expect to use a paid VPN over that period; it is not an apples-to-apples reason to choose Surfshark if you only need a month or two. The monthly rate in that comparison is substantially higher than its long-term equivalent.

When Windscribe’s pricing makes sense
Windscribe offers monthly Pro billing and a plan that scales by selected locations, with the official page stating a $3 minimum. That structure is relevant if you do not want a multi-year term or do not need every location. Review what is included in the exact plan before treating a lower starting total as equivalent to another provider’s full subscription.

Which features could decide the comparison?
Port forwarding
Surfshark’s comparison identifies ephemeral port forwarding as a Windscribe differentiator. If you need port forwarding for a specific application or setup, verify the current feature scope and supported platforms directly before subscribing. A feature name alone does not establish that it will work with your particular device or network. Surfshark’s comparison.
Extra privacy products
Surfshark emphasizes additional privacy products alongside its VPN. Consider those extras only if you would use them; they do not automatically make the VPN connection better for every user. Windscribe’s free and Build-A-Plan options may be more relevant if your priority is access without a large commitment or paying for only selected locations.

Device and performance fit
Before paying, check support for the exact operating system, router, or other device you intend to use. Security.org’s comparison, updated August 17, 2026, reports different speed outcomes for Mac and Windows. Those are that publisher’s tests, not a universal performance guarantee across devices, networks, server choices, or locations. What do the audits and transparency records establish?
Audit claims are useful only when the auditor, date, and scope are clear. Surfshark’s Trust Center lists a 2026 Cure53 infrastructure and Dausos protocol audit, a SecuRing infrastructure audit completed in December 2025, and Deloitte no-logs verifications for 2023 and 2025. These are distinct assessments; they should not be condensed into a claim that every part of the service is continuously audited. Surfshark Trust Center.

Surfshark’s transparency report for April–June 2026 records 374,719 DMCA requests, 33 government inquiries, zero national security letters, zero gag orders, and one government warrant. Surfshark says none resulted in disclosure of users’ online-activity data. For the April warrant from the Amsterdam District Court, the report says account-existence confirmation and payment-related information were available and disclosed—not browsing-activity data. For Windscribe, Tom’s Guide reported that the latest server-stack audit it identified at the time of its review was from June 2024, and cited earlier app audits in 2021 and 2022. That account concerns the audits the review identified and their scopes; it is not directly interchangeable with Surfshark’s list of infrastructure, protocol, and no-logs assessments.
