Surfshark announced post-quantum protection for WireGuard on January 19, 2026. The feature is available through the Surfshark app when WireGuard is selected; the company describes it as an additional layer, not a replacement for the VPN. Its announcement does not establish that Surfshark was first among VPN providers or provide enough technical detail to verify “full post-quantum security.”
What Surfshark announced
Surfshark’s January 19, 2026 announcement says “post-quantum protection is now live on WireGuard!” That is a company statement announcing its own feature. The announcement does not substantiate an industry-first claim, and it does not disclose enough about the implementation to independently assess the broader phrase “full post-quantum security.”

The distinction matters: Surfshark describes an added protection for the VPN connection when using WireGuard, not a change that makes every website, app, account, or device post-quantum secure.
How to enable it in the Surfshark app
- Open the Surfshark app and go to Settings.
- Open VPN settings, then choose Protocol.
- Select WireGuard. Surfshark says the post-quantum protection activates automatically with this protocol.
Surfshark’s support documentation lists WireGuard in its Windows, iOS, Android, and macOS apps. It says the post-quantum layer is not available with manual configurations.

What “post-quantum” means here—and what is not established
WireGuard’s protocol specification says its handshake can mix in an optional pre-shared key, adding a symmetric-key layer “for, say, post-quantum resistance.” That is general WireGuard context; Surfshark’s announcement does not say whether its implementation uses this mechanism.
The reviewed Surfshark announcement and support documentation do not name the cryptographic algorithm or provide a security proof for this implementation. The available material therefore supports describing the feature as Surfshark’s post-quantum protection for WireGuard, not independently verified “full” post-quantum security.

Why the “major first” claim needs qualification
The announcement establishes that Surfshark made its launch announcement on January 19, 2026. It does not compare the launch with other VPN providers, so it cannot establish that Surfshark was first across the industry. “Major first” should be treated as framing, not a verified comparative fact.

Auto-connect can affect which protocol is used
In a September 14, 2026 explainer, Surfshark advises users to select WireGuard and warns that Auto-connect could switch to another protocol after reconnecting. This is vendor guidance: if the feature matters to you, check that the app is using WireGuard after a reconnect.
