Choose Surface Pro if you need Windows 11 desktop software, Microsoft 365 administration, several peripherals, or a tablet that can serve as your primary laptop. Choose iPad Pro if you value the lightest tablet, a tandem-OLED display, Apple Pencil Pro drawing, handwriting, and a touch-first workflow. Neither is universally better: the right choice depends on whether your work is organized around desktop applications or tablet apps.

Surface Pro: a Windows 11 2-in-1
Microsoft’s current Surface Pro family includes 12-inch and 13-inch models. The cited Snapdragon configuration uses Snapdragon X Plus or X Elite processors, 16 GB or 32 GB of LPDDR5x memory, and a removable 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB SSD. The 13-inch device weighs 895 g and uses a 3:2 PixelSense Flow display at 2,880×1,920 resolution with refresh rates up to 120 Hz. OLED and LCD configurations are offered for the 13-inch model.
The 12-inch model is substantially lighter at 686 g and uses a 90 Hz LCD. Microsoft lists up to 15.5 hours of local video playback for this model, with up to 13 hours of active web use. For the 13-inch model, Microsoft lists up to 11.5 hours of active web use on the current product page. A separate Snapdragon specification lists up to 14 hours of local video playback and up to 10 hours of active web use for Wi‑Fi models; Microsoft says that test was conducted in April 2024. The newer 15.5-hour claim is identified as testing conducted in May 2026, so keep the model and test date attached to each figure.

Surface Pro has two USB-C/USB4 ports, a Surface Connect port, Windows 11, an integrated adjustable kickstand, and compatibility with Surface Pro Keyboard and Surface Slim Pen 2 accessories. Microsoft lists the keyboard and pen separately rather than as part of the tablet specification.
iPad Pro: a tablet-first iPadOS computer
Apple’s current iPad Pro comes in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes with 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, or 2 TB capacities. The Wi‑Fi 11-inch model weighs 444 g; the Wi‑Fi 13-inch model weighs 579 g. Both use tandem-OLED Ultra Retina XDR displays with P3 wide color and ProMotion adaptive refresh rates up to 120 Hz. The current specification identifies Apple’s M5 chip and iPadOS.
Apple lists support for Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). The tablet has one Thunderbolt/USB 4 port and supports one external display up to 6K at 60 Hz or 5K at 120 Hz. Apple claims up to 10 hours of Wi‑Fi web surfing or video playback and up to 9 hours when using cellular data. Those are Apple’s own test figures and are not directly comparable with Microsoft’s Surface tests.
Recommended Free Tools
Apple describes iPadOS as including “powerful features and built-in apps designed to take advantage of the unique capabilities of iPad.” That design choice is the central trade-off: you get a very thin, touch-oriented computer, but your workflow must fit iPadOS app and file-management conventions.
Work software: desktop compatibility versus tablet workflow
When Surface Pro is the safer work computer
Surface Pro is the lower-risk choice when your job depends on Windows desktop applications, enterprise administration consoles, file-system utilities, browser extensions, or Microsoft 365 desktop workflows. Windows 11 provides the same operating-system environment used by many office PCs, which can simplify joining an organization’s device-management process, using existing peripherals, and moving files between established desktop tools.
That does not mean every Windows application behaves identically on every Surface Pro. The Snapdragon models use an Arm-based platform, so check the exact application’s Arm support, emulation behavior, plug-in requirements, and hardware-driver compatibility before buying. A specialized utility, legacy line-of-business program, VPN component, scanner driver, or add-in can matter more than the processor name.
For a laptop-replacement setup, the kickstand lets you set the screen at a chosen angle while the detachable keyboard provides a familiar typing position. Microsoft summarizes the design as: “Switch seamlessly between tablet and laptop modes with a satisfying snap.” In practice, plan for a desk, lap, or tray surface that can support the kickstand; it is not the same posture as a hinged clamshell on every surface.

When iPad Pro is the better work tool
iPad Pro suits work that is primarily browser-based, document-focused, visual, or organized around tablet applications. Direct touch, split-screen multitasking, handwriting, and quick wake-and-use behavior can be valuable for meetings, field notes, reading, marking up documents, and reviewing creative work.
The limitation is structural rather than a simple performance question: iPadOS applications use Apple’s tablet file and multitasking model. Before committing, verify that the exact versions of your office, project-management, security, storage, and communication tools provide the functions you need on iPadOS. If a workflow requires a desktop plug-in, unrestricted file-system access, or a Windows-only administration console, the iPad may become a companion device rather than your only computer.
Microsoft 365 and cloud work
Both platforms can handle common cloud documents and web services, but the experience differs when you move beyond editing text or slides. Surface Pro is preferable when you administer Microsoft 365, manage local files, use desktop add-ins, or connect to several USB devices. iPad Pro is attractive when the work is mostly reviewing, annotating, presenting, or collaborating through touch-friendly apps and a browser.
Typing, posture, and accessories
Surface Pro keyboard setup
A Surface Pro Keyboard is an optional accessory. It attaches to the tablet and works with the built-in kickstand, giving you a compact setup for long typing sessions. The keyboard also protects the display when closed, but the complete kit is heavier and thicker than the bare tablet. Microsoft’s cited compatibility information also supports Surface Slim Pen 2, which can be stored with compatible keyboard covers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a Surface purchase, price the tablet, keyboard, pen, and any charger or dock as one system. The tablet-only weight and price can make the device appear closer to an iPad than the working configuration actually is.
iPad Pro keyboard setup
iPad Pro uses Apple’s Smart Connector and a keyboard-case ecosystem. The cited specification confirms the connector and ecosystem but does not establish a specific current Magic Keyboard model, so verify compatibility with the exact 11-inch or 13-inch generation before ordering. A keyboard case adds protection and a trackpad-style pointing surface, but it also reduces the weight advantage over a bare iPad.
Apple Pencil Pro is optional. Include it in the budget if handwriting, illustration, or markup is central to your work; otherwise, the iPad can be used without a pen. The Apple Pencil (USB-C) is another supported option, but compare the features you need before choosing between the two.

Drawing and handwriting
iPad Pro’s strengths for visual work
iPad Pro’s tandem-OLED Ultra Retina XDR display is the stronger specification for high-contrast visual work. P3 wide color, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and up to 1,600 nits of HDR peak brightness can make dark detail, highlights, and saturated colors easier to evaluate. ProMotion can adapt refresh rate up to 120 Hz, and Apple Pencil Pro is supported directly by the current models.
Its light tablet body is useful when you draw while standing, hold the device in one hand, or move between locations. The trade-off is that your preferred drawing, 3D, photo, or video applications must exist on iPadOS with the tools and file access you require. Confirm support for plug-ins, external storage, color-managed export, and the formats used by collaborators.
Surface Pro’s strengths for creative work
Surface Pro combines pen input with a 3:2 screen and Windows desktop software. The 13-inch display’s 2,880×1,920 resolution provides a taller canvas than a typical 16:9 laptop, and the OLED option can improve contrast compared with the LCD configuration. Refresh rates reach 120 Hz on the 13-inch model. Surface Slim Pen 2 is the intended pen accessory.
The advantage is breadth of desktop tools and a conventional file-and-peripheral workflow. A photographer, designer, engineer, or video editor who needs a Windows-only utility, a particular plug-in, or several calibrated accessories may prefer Surface Pro even if the iPad has the more impressive display specification. Check the exact Arm or Intel configuration and the software vendor’s support statement before relying on a demanding application.
Video and photo workflows
iPad Pro media hardware
Apple’s M5 specification lists hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW. That makes the iPad Pro’s media support relevant to editors who use applications that can take advantage of those formats. The single Thunderbolt/USB 4 port can connect fast storage, but a hub may be needed when storage, a card reader, power, and another accessory must be attached at the same time.

Surface Pro media workflow
Surface Pro’s practical advantage is access to Windows desktop creative applications and the peripheral choices available in that ecosystem. Two USB-C/USB4 ports and Surface Connect make it easier to build a docked setup with storage, displays, input devices, or power. Software suitability remains configuration-specific on Snapdragon models; verify Arm support and any required drivers rather than assuming a desktop application will perform identically.
Displays, ports, and external monitors
| Feature | Surface Pro | iPad Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Display sizes | Current 12-inch and 13-inch models | 11-inch and 13-inch models |
| Panel and refresh | 12-inch LCD at 90 Hz; 13-inch OLED or LCD up to 120 Hz | Tandem OLED Ultra Retina XDR with ProMotion up to 120 Hz |
| Resolution and color information | 13-inch: 2,880×1,920, 3:2; color details vary by configuration | P3 wide color; 2,000,000:1 contrast; up to 1,600-nit HDR peak |
| Built-in ports | Two USB-C/USB4 plus Surface Connect | One Thunderbolt/USB 4 |
| External display support | Specific monitor limit is not stated in the cited specification | One external display up to 6K at 60 Hz or 5K at 120 Hz |
Surface Pro’s extra USB-C port and Surface Connect reduce the need for a hub in a multi-device desk setup. iPad Pro’s single high-speed port is capable, but simultaneous connections commonly require a hub or adapter. If your routine includes an SSD, card reader, audio interface, and monitor, draw the connection plan before buying.

Portability and battery claims
Tablet-only weight
| Model | Weight | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Pro 12-inch | 686 g | Much lighter than the cited 13-inch Surface Pro, while using a 90 Hz LCD. |
| Surface Pro 13-inch Snapdragon model | 895 g | Comparable to a small laptop before adding the keyboard and pen. |
| iPad Pro 11-inch Wi‑Fi | 444 g | The easiest model to carry as a pure tablet. |
| iPad Pro 13-inch Wi‑Fi | 579 g | Still 316 g lighter than the cited 13-inch Surface Pro before accessories. |
These are tablet-only figures. Once a keyboard case, pen, charger, and hub are added, the practical difference narrows. Compare complete kits if you will type or draw every day.
How to read the battery numbers
Microsoft lists up to 14 hours of local video playback and up to 10 hours of active web use for cited Wi‑Fi Snapdragon models, based on testing conducted in April 2024. Its current product page lists up to 15.5 hours of local video playback for the 12-inch model, up to 13 hours of active web use for that model, and up to 11.5 hours for the 13-inch model; the 15.5-hour figure is identified as testing conducted in May 2026.

Apple lists up to 10 hours of Wi‑Fi web surfing or video playback and up to 9 hours on cellular data for iPad Pro. Video playback, web browsing, screen brightness, refresh behavior, radios, application load, and cellular use all affect actual runtime. Treat the claims as manufacturer limits under stated test conditions, not as a common benchmark.
Storage, cellular use, and expansion
Storage choices
Surface Pro’s cited removable SSD options are 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB. iPad Pro offers 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB capacities. Choose based on the size of local project files and the cost of external storage; do not assume you can expand internal capacity later without checking the exact service procedure.
Cellular connectivity
Apple publishes a separate cellular battery claim of up to nine hours and a Wi‑Fi claim of up to ten hours. The cited Surface battery specifications describe Wi‑Fi models and do not establish an equivalent cellular configuration. If you need mobile data away from Wi‑Fi, verify the exact Surface model and carrier support rather than inferring it from the iPad lineup.

Which one fits common users?
Students
Choose Surface Pro when your course requires Windows-only software, programming tools, institutional utilities, or extensive desktop multitasking. Choose iPad Pro when reading, handwritten notes, diagrams, and light document work dominate and your school confirms that required apps run on iPadOS. Include the keyboard and pen in the student budget; the lightest tablet is not necessarily the lightest complete study kit.
Freelancers
A freelancer who delivers files through desktop applications, handles local assets, and connects several devices will usually have fewer compatibility surprises with Surface Pro. A freelancer whose work is illustration, review, markup, social content, or client presentation may value iPad Pro’s screen, pen support, and portability. Check the exact export formats and collaboration tools used by clients before choosing.
Office and enterprise users
Surface Pro is the conservative choice for Windows administration, established desktop policies, and peripheral-heavy desks. iPad Pro can work well as a managed tablet or companion device, but confirm mobile-device-management support, authentication tools, VPN requirements, and document workflows with your organization.

Pick iPad Pro when the priority is a light drawing surface, Apple Pencil Pro, tandem OLED, and touch-first applications. Pick Surface Pro when the priority is a Windows creative application, plug-in, driver, or desktop file workflow. In either case, verify the application and accessory compatibility for the exact model before ordering.
A practical decision checklist
- List every application you must use, then mark whether it requires Windows desktop, supports Windows on Arm, or has a full iPadOS version.
- Decide whether the tablet will be your only computer. If yes, test your file-management, backup, printing, monitor, and peripheral requirements rather than judging from processor specifications.
- Choose a screen size and write down the tablet-only weight you can carry daily.
- Add the keyboard, pen, charger, hub, storage, and subscriptions to both configurations.
- Map your ports: count displays, drives, card readers, audio devices, and power connections you use simultaneously.
- For drawing or handwriting, confirm support for Surface Slim Pen 2 or Apple Pencil Pro in the applications you actually use.
- Compare battery claims only within the same manufacturer’s test method; do not treat the advertised maximum as a cross-brand ranking.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing bare tablets instead of complete kits
The iPad Pro’s weight advantage is largest before accessories. A keyboard case, pen, and hub can materially change the carry weight and cost. Surface Pro’s keyboard and pen are also separate system costs. Put every required component in one worksheet.
Assuming all desktop software is safe on Snapdragon
Windows 11 is familiar, but Arm compatibility still depends on the application, plug-ins, drivers, and peripherals. Confirm support with the software publisher, especially for legacy utilities and specialist hardware.
Assuming one iPad port is enough
iPad Pro can drive one high-resolution external display, but its single Thunderbolt/USB 4 port may require a hub for storage, power, and other accessories at the same time. Check the hub’s display, power-delivery, and storage specifications.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Using battery figures as a promise
Microsoft’s local-video and active-web figures and Apple’s Wi‑Fi, cellular, web, and video figures are measured differently. Brightness, radio use, refresh rate, and workload can move actual runtime substantially.
Choosing a pen without checking the app
Hardware support does not guarantee that every drawing or note-taking application exposes the same pressure, hover, gesture, or export features. Confirm the app’s pen support and your required file formats before committing.
Bottom line
Surface Pro is the better laptop replacement when Windows 11 compatibility, enterprise administration, desktop software, and multiple peripherals come first. iPad Pro is the better creative tablet when low weight, Apple Pencil Pro, tandem OLED, handwriting, and a touch-first workflow matter more than desktop flexibility. The 13-inch iPad Pro is 579 g versus 895 g for the cited 13-inch Surface Pro Snapdragon model, but keyboard and pen accessories narrow that practical gap. Make the decision with a complete accessory kit and your actual application list, not with tablet-only weight or cross-brand battery claims.
