Wccftech reported on October 11, 2026, that Microsoft’s $5,899.99 Surface Laptop Ultra configuration with RTX Spark, 128GB of unified memory and a 1TB SSD was listed as out of stock. That is a time-specific product-page report—not evidence of how many laptops sold, how quickly they sold, or why. CUDA may make the platform appealing to people who already use NVIDIA software, but no published sales or inventory data establishes it as the cause.
What the stock report establishes—and what it does not
Wccftech’s October 11 report said Microsoft’s product page showed the 128GB/1TB configuration at $5,899.99 as out of stock, while lower configurations were available at the time Wccftech checked. TechCrunch’s October 7 coverage also described Microsoft’s top configuration as out of stock and cited approximate prices from $2,600 to $5,900. Together, these reports support a narrow conclusion: the top configuration was reported unavailable around launch.

Neither report provides a unit count, inventory figure, sell-through rate, or buyer survey. Wccftech said Microsoft had not shared supply or sales data and that limited early supply was unconfirmed. The listing status can change and may differ by region or retailer; it should not be read as proof of a broad or lasting shortage.
Why CUDA could matter to potential buyers
NVIDIA positions RTX Spark as a Windows platform that brings its CUDA and RTX software ecosystem to laptops, alongside technologies including TensorRT, OptiX, DLSS, Reflex and G-SYNC. For developers and creators already using compatible NVIDIA tools, access to familiar software may be one reason to consider an RTX Spark machine. It is a plausible appeal, not a demonstrated explanation for the reported stock status.

NVIDIA’s June 1 announcement described possible uses ranging from local AI and 3D work to video editing and gaming, and named several manufacturers for its fall lineup, including Microsoft Surface. Its claims about model sizes, context length, scene rendering, video formats and gaming performance are vendor statements; the cited coverage does not provide independent tests of retail Surface Laptop Ultra units. Software support alone also cannot establish that a particular model, workflow or performance target will work as a buyer expects.
What Microsoft announced about the Surface Laptop Ultra
Microsoft announced the laptop on October 7, 2026, with preorders starting at $2,599 and availability beginning October 16. Those were announcement terms, not a guarantee of current stock. The configuration at the center of the stock report was listed at $5,899.99, according to Wccftech.

- With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution
- The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
- Processor and graphics: up to 20 Grace CPU cores and up to 6,144 Blackwell RTX GPU cores, according to Microsoft.
- Memory: up to 128GB of unified memory, dynamically shared between CPU and GPU. Microsoft says the amount addressable by the GPU is less than the total; it is not 128GB of dedicated GPU VRAM.
- Display and connections: a 15-inch PixelSense Ultra touchscreen, three USB-C ports total, HDMI, USB-A, an SD card reader and a 3.5mm audio jack.
- Portability and displays: Microsoft says the laptop is under 4.5 pounds and less than 18mm thin, and can drive up to three 4K displays with compatible displays, cables and accessories.
- Storage: Microsoft describes it as user-removable and upgradeable, but the announcement does not specify a compatible interface, form factor or supported capacity.
Microsoft says the laptop can run AI models exceeding 120 billion parameters locally and cites up to one petaflop of AI performance. The company’s fine print defines the petaflop figure as theoretical FP4 performance using sparsity. These are manufacturer claims, not independent benchmark results.
How to assess the platform beyond a stock listing
A stock report does not tell a buyer whether the laptop is a good fit. Compare the details that affect the work you actually plan to do:
Rank #3
- A PREMIUM PERFORMANCE LAPTOP — Ready for work, school, and creativity. Built for busy days, big projects, and nonstop multitasking. Run video calls, school and work apps, 20+ browser tabs, and AI tools at the same time without slowing down.
- WITH AI BUILT IN — With a dedicated AI chip (Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite), this Copilot+ PC[5] on Windows 11 helps you work smarter and faster. Prompt, create, and automate with ease - ready for even your most demanding tasks.
- A 13.8" TOUCHSCREEN YOU'LL ACTUALLY USE — Sharp colors, real detail, smooth 120Hz scrolling on the PixelSense touchscreen[1] with LCD display[2]. Tap, scroll, or pinch to zoom - whichever feels right for streaming, editing photos, or daily work.
- 20 HOURS OF BATTERY (LEAVE THE CHARGER) — Up to 20 hours of video playback[3] on a single charge. Work from a coffee shop, take it to class/work, or binge an entire season on a long flight — it'll keep up.
- THE PORTS YOU NEED — Two USB-C / USB4[4] ports for fast charging, big file transfers, or hooking up to three 4K monitors when you want a full desktop. Wi-Fi 7 keeps you online and fast wherever you are.
- Memory usable by your workload: account for the shared CPU/GPU pool and Microsoft’s note that the GPU-addressable amount is below 128GB.
- Measured performance: look for results on your specific models, creative applications or games, rather than treating peak vendor figures as retail-device benchmarks.
- Software compatibility: confirm that the frameworks, libraries, drivers and applications you rely on support the laptop’s Windows and NVIDIA setup.
- Like-for-like price: compare configurations with the same memory and storage, not a lower-tier starting price against the top model.
- Everyday behavior: seek evidence on sustained performance, thermals, battery life and portability for the tasks you will run.
- Upgrade details: verify storage compatibility and service instructions before buying an SSD; the announcement alone is not enough to select a drive.
- Local availability: check Microsoft or retailers in your market, since availability changes over time and by seller.
Is the Surface Laptop Ultra a gaming PC?
Microsoft includes gaming among the laptop’s intended uses, and NVIDIA lists gaming technologies such as DLSS, Reflex and G-SYNC in the RTX Spark platform stack. That makes gaming a stated use case, but it does not establish how well a retail Surface Laptop Ultra runs any particular game. NVIDIA’s gaming performance statements are vendor claims, and independent retail-unit results are not provided in the cited reports. Buyers should look for game-specific testing at the resolution and settings they intend to use.
