It is not scheduled to reach select markets until October 13, 2026, so its advertised speed and battery life have not yet been independently tested.
“X2 Plus” is the name of the Surface’s Qualcomm processor, not the laptop’s model name. Microsoft places it in the Surface Laptop 8th Edition family; this comparison is specifically about its 13-inch model and Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Air M5.

At a glance: which laptop fits your work?
| Work need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday work and storage value | MacBook Air M5 | Its entry configuration costs less and includes twice the storage of the Surface entry configuration. |
| Windows-only apps or Windows fleet requirements | Surface Laptop | It ships with Windows 11; confirm that your specific work apps and peripherals run properly on Windows on Arm. |
| Touchscreen use | Surface Laptop | Its 13-inch display supports touch; the Air does not. |
| Legacy USB-A peripherals | Surface Laptop | It has a built-in USB-A port. The Air has Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports and MagSafe, so USB-A devices need an adapter or hub. |
| Higher display resolution | MacBook Air M5 | Its 2560 × 1664 display is sharper on paper than the Surface’s 1920 × 1280 panel. |
| Battery life | Not settled by ratings alone | The manufacturers’ maximum video-playback figures use different test methods and are not independent, like-for-like results. |
Why is the MacBook Air cheaper?
The US entry-level MacBook Air M5 costs $1,099 for 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage, according to TechRepublic’s 2026 comparison. Microsoft’s listed starting price for the Surface Laptop 13-inch is $1,199.99 for 16GB and 256GB. That makes the Surface $100.99 more expensive at the starting point while offering half as much storage. TechRepublic’s comparison and Microsoft’s Surface product page report the respective starting prices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe difference grows if you need a Surface configuration with 512GB: the reported top consumer configuration is $1,499.99 for 24GB of memory and 512GB of storage. A price for a 16GB/512GB Surface configuration is not established here, so the $1,499.99 option is not a like-for-like memory comparison with the Air’s base model. How do their processors compare for work?
The Surface uses a 6-core Snapdragon X2 Plus processor and an 80-TOPS Hexagon NPU; the MacBook Air M5 has a 10-core CPU. TechRadar’s comparison says the Snapdragon falls short of the M5, particularly in single-core performance. That suggests the Air is the safer pick if your work depends on fast response in lightly threaded tasks, but it does not establish how either laptop performs in every real-world app.

Those are Microsoft internal comparisons against its own earlier model—not results against the M5. The Surface is not due to ship until October 13, 2026, and independent benchmarks and battery tests are not yet available. Treat its performance claims as manufacturer claims, not verified head-to-head outcomes.

Which screen is better for office work?
The Surface has a 13-inch, 1920 × 1280 touchscreen rated at 500 nits and a 60Hz refresh rate. The Air has a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display at 2560 × 1664, also rated at 500 nits. The Air’s higher resolution provides more pixels for text and fine detail; the Surface’s distinguishing advantage is touch input. The reported resolutions and display details are summarized by TechRadar and TechRepublic.
For spreadsheet-heavy or text-focused work, resolution and your preferred screen size may matter more than touch. If tapping, annotating or navigating directly on the display is part of your workflow, the Surface’s touchscreen can be more useful than the Air’s extra pixels.

Which ports and operating system fit your setup?
The Surface provides two USB-C ports (USB 3.2), one USB-A port and a headphone jack. The Air provides two Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe charging and a headphone jack. The Surface is more convenient for a USB-A mouse, flash drive or other legacy device. With the Air, plan on a USB-C adapter or hub for those peripherals.

Port count alone does not determine which machine suits a desk setup. Check the exact connection and bandwidth needs of your docks, displays, storage and other work equipment. The Air’s Thunderbolt 4 ports may suit Thunderbolt-based setups; the Surface’s listed USB-C ports are USB 3.2.

Software compatibility may matter more than either port selection or processor specifications. The Surface runs Windows 11 on Arm, while the MacBook Air runs macOS. Before choosing the Surface, verify that your work-critical apps, drivers, VPN, security tools and accessories support Windows on Arm. The available comparison does not establish compatibility for every app or peripheral. For a managed workplace, also confirm that IT supports the platform and can meet its management and security requirements; an organization’s existing Windows or Apple fleet can determine the practical choice.
Does the Surface really last longer on battery?
Microsoft rates the Surface Laptop for up to 22.5 hours of local video playback; Apple rates the MacBook Air M5 for up to 18 hours. These are manufacturer maximums measured using different methods, so they do not establish that the Surface lasts 4.5 hours longer in everyday work. Neither figure is an independent test of the Snapdragon X2 Plus model. Battery life in your workload will depend on how you use the laptop, including the apps and display settings involved.
When does the Surface Laptop go on sale?
Microsoft unveiled the Snapdragon X2 Plus Surface Laptop on September 23, 2026. It is available for preorder and is scheduled for retail availability on October 13, 2026, in select markets. The MacBook Air M5 has been on sale since around March 2026, according to TechRepublic. Availability can vary by market.
Which one should you buy for work?
Choose the MacBook Air M5 if
- You want the stronger starting value: it costs less and includes 512GB rather than 256GB.
- Your work is well served by macOS and you prefer its higher-resolution display.
- Your workload benefits from the M5’s stronger reported single-core performance.
- You already use Apple devices or your organization supports macOS.
Choose the Surface Laptop if
- Your work requires Windows 11 apps or your organization’s Windows fleet and management setup.
- You need a touchscreen or regularly connect USB-A devices without an adapter.
- You are comfortable checking Windows-on-Arm app and peripheral compatibility before committing.
- You can wait for retail availability and independent performance and battery testing.
For a general work laptop without a Windows-specific requirement, the MacBook Air M5 is the more compelling buy on the published entry configurations. The Surface makes more sense when Windows, touch or built-in USB-A solves a real work need—not because its unverified battery or performance claims prove it beats the Air.
