Ice VII is a solid molecular crystal: oxygen atoms form a body-centred-cubic (bcc) framework, while water molecules retain a disordered hydrogen-bond arrangement. Superionic ice is a hotter, high-pressure state in which the oxygen atoms still form an ordered crystal but hydrogen ions move through that framework almost as they would in a liquid. The result is a material that is solid to compression yet highly ionic-conducting.
“Superionic ice” is also a family name rather than the name of one unique crystal. Depending on pressure, temperature and compression history, its oxygen lattice can be face-centred cubic (fcc) or, at still higher pressure, monoclinic P21/c. The decisive distinction is therefore hydrogen motion, not simply the symmetry of the oxygen lattice.

The table separates properties that are often combined in popular descriptions. Ice VII is already an unusual high-pressure solid, but it is not automatically superionic. A sample becomes superionic when proton mobility changes qualitatively while the oxygen framework remains crystalline.

What ice VII is
A molecular crystal with a bcc oxygen framework
Ice VII is a dense polymorph of water. Its oxygen atoms occupy a body-centred-cubic lattice, giving the solid a regular three-dimensional framework. The hydrogen atoms do not form one unique, repeating orientation throughout that framework. Instead, they make a random, hydrogen-bond network, so the crystal is structurally ordered in oxygen positions but hydrogen-disordered in molecular orientation.

That description matters because “ordered” does not mean every atom is fixed in a simple pattern. Oxygen positions provide the principal crystal lattice, while hydrogen disorder is an intrinsic feature of the phase. Water molecules remain the useful chemical picture for ice VII: each oxygen is associated with hydrogens in a molecular hydrogen-bond network rather than with a freely flowing proton fluid.
Where it forms
At room temperature, liquid water freezes into ice VII at pressures above approximately 2 GPa. This is a pressure threshold, not a universal temperature-independent boundary: the exact phase relations shift with temperature, compression path and other experimental details. Ice VII occupies a broad high-pressure region, which is why it is routinely used as the reference solid when researchers compress water toward planetary-interior conditions.
How it conducts
Ice VII is not a perfect electrical insulator. Charge transport can involve pressure-dependent ionic motion and defects, including mobile carrier arrangements associated with the hydrogen-bond network. Measurements at room temperature found a conductivity peak near 10 GPa. A peak does not mean that ice VII has become superionic; it describes the way conduction changes within the molecular solid as pressure alters its defects and bonding environment.
In ice VII, hydrogen movement remains constrained by the molecular lattice and by the energy required to create or move defects. The oxygen framework is not accompanied by a liquid-like proton sublattice. That is the practical dividing line between ordinary high-pressure conduction in ice VII and superionic conduction.
What superionic ice is
A solid oxygen lattice plus liquid-like protons
Superionic ice combines two behaviors that are normally associated with different states of matter. Oxygen atoms retain long-range crystalline order, so the material can diffract as a solid. At the same time, hydrogen ions move rapidly through that oxygen structure, producing a liquid-like sublattice. Jiming Sun and colleagues summarized the arrangement in Nature Communications as “In superionic ice liquid hydrogen coexists with a crystalline oxygen sublattice.”
The phrase “liquid hydrogen” in this context refers to the dynamic proton component inside the solid, not to a separate pool of molecular H2 surrounding the crystal. Protons hop and diffuse among available sites while the much heavier oxygen atoms remain organized. This decoupling of the two sublattices is what gives superionic ice its unusually high ionic conductivity.

It is a family of phases
There is no single superionic crystal structure valid at every pressure. High-pressure calculations and experiments identify several oxygen-lattice arrangements. Some superionic fields retain a bcc oxygen framework; others have close-packed, face-centred-cubic oxygen. At still higher pressure, calculations and measurements discuss a monoclinic P21/c oxygen lattice. The proton dynamics are the common feature that links these phases.
Consequently, saying that “superionic ice has an fcc structure” is incomplete. It may describe the fcc superionic phase observed in a particular pressure-temperature path, but it does not exclude bcc or P21/c superionic states elsewhere in the phase diagram.
The structural difference: what stays ordered and what moves
In ice VII, oxygen and molecular identity dominate
The bcc oxygen lattice in ice VII supplies a rigid scaffold. Hydrogen atoms are disordered, but they remain associated with a molecular hydrogen-bond network. Rearrangement therefore involves molecular reorientation, defect creation and proton transfers constrained by the network. The crystal can conduct through these mechanisms without turning its hydrogen sublattice into a liquid.
In superionic ice, the sublattices separate dynamically
When temperature is high enough at a given pressure, hydrogen ions gain sufficient mobility to move continuously through the oxygen framework. The oxygen lattice still carries the material’s long-range order, while the proton positions become time-dependent and delocalized. A diffraction pattern can therefore show crystalline oxygen even though hydrogen transport resembles that of an ionic liquid.
This is why superionic behavior cannot be inferred from oxygen symmetry alone. Two samples may have similarly ordered oxygen atoms but very different hydrogen dynamics. The phase assignment requires transport, thermodynamic or spectroscopic evidence in addition to lattice measurements.

Charge carriers are protons
Water’s hydrogen atoms provide the mobile positive charge. In a superionic state, protons can hop between neighboring configurations and diffuse over many lattice spacings. Each successful hop transports charge, so the collective current rises sharply compared with conduction that depends only on sparse defects in a molecular crystal.

Conductivity changes reveal phase boundaries
Electrical conductivity is not merely a convenient measurement; its pressure and temperature dependence helps identify transitions. Nature Communications reported an abrupt conductivity change at the boundary between the solid phase and an fcc superionic phase. By contrast, the transition from the solid phase into the P21/c superionic state was continuous in the reported calculations and measurements. The difference indicates that the proton-diffusion network develops differently in the two superionic structures.
Some superionic transport is direction-dependent
The P21/c superionic phase has strongly anisotropic, quasi-two-dimensional proton diffusion. Protons move much more readily along preferred directions or planes than across them. A material can therefore be highly conducting overall while still showing major directional differences in current. This anisotropy is important when applying laboratory results to a planet, where pressure gradients and crystal orientations vary through a thick interior layer.
Pressure, temperature and phase relations
Pressure alone is not enough
Ice VII is stabilized primarily by compression and can form from liquid water at room temperature once pressure is high enough. Superionic behavior needs both compression and substantial heating. Raising pressure at low temperature does not automatically produce a proton liquid; raising temperature without maintaining the required pressure instead leads toward ordinary melting or other water phases.
Published phase boundaries differ because experiments and simulations follow different compression paths, use different isotopes and sample different time scales. Shock compression heats and compresses water rapidly, while static diamond-anvil experiments can hold a sample for longer and measure it with X-rays or optical probes. Hydrogen and deuterium can also shift transition conditions. These factors explain why a single universal pressure-temperature line should not be assigned to “superionic ice.”
Planetary-interior conditions
Shock studies of ice VII reached conditions associated with giant-planet interiors. Along the shocked ice-VII Hugoniot, melting was estimated near 5,000 K at 190 GPa. That value is a condition on a particular shock-compression path, not a general melting point for every form of water at 190 GPa.
Early high-pressure calculations compared competing superionic phases from 280 GPa to 1.3 TPa. Such pressures extend far beyond routine laboratory freezing experiments and illustrate why the superionic family includes multiple structures as compression increases.

What experiments have actually shown
2014: the molecular ice-VII reference
Scientific Reports described ice VII as “a crystal of water molecules formed into a bcc oxygen lattice and a random hydrogen-bond network.” The same work documented pressure-dependent conductivity and reported the room-temperature conductivity maximum near 10 GPa. These observations established that ice VII has unusual transport properties while preserving its molecular-crystal identity.
2017: shock evidence for superionic conduction
A shock-compression study reported electrical-conductivity and thermodynamic signatures consistent with superionic conduction in shocked ice VII. Shock experiments are valuable because they reach high pressure and temperature together, but their rapid paths make phase interpretation dependent on models of the shock state and on the measured thermodynamic response.
2019: direct diffraction of an fcc superionic phase
A nanosecond X-ray diffraction experiment directly resolved a transition from a bcc ice phase to an fcc superionic phase. The newly identified phase was named ice XVIII. Seeing the oxygen lattice change while transport and thermodynamic behavior indicated mobile protons provided a direct structural link between the superionic concept and a crystalline oxygen framework.
2021: synchrotron and optical evidence for multiple fields
A synchrotron X-ray and optical study identified first-order transitions to bcc and fcc oxygen lattices. Changes in density, optical conductivity and fusion enthalpy were used together to assign the observed states as superionic phases. The combination is important: diffraction establishes oxygen order, while optical and thermodynamic signals test whether hydrogen mobility and phase energetics are consistent with a superionic state.
Could Uranus and Neptune contain superionic ice?
Why scientists consider it plausible
Uranus and Neptune are ice giants with interiors containing water-rich material under pressures and temperatures far beyond Earth’s surface conditions. Laboratory phase fields and planetary-interior models place some internal regions in the range where superionic water could exist. A layer with an ordered oxygen framework and mobile protons would conduct electricity far more effectively than ordinary molecular ice.
Possible effects on magnetic fields
The magnetic fields of Uranus and Neptune are unusual in strength, offset and geometry. A conducting water layer could participate in dynamo action—the generation of magnetic fields by moving electrically conductive material. Superionic water is therefore a candidate contributor to the depth and structure of the dynamo region, although the planetary models do not uniquely prove that it is present.

Possible effects on heat transport
Superionic phases also matter thermally. A crystalline oxygen framework and mobile protons can transport energy differently from either a normal solid or a fully molecular fluid. The phase boundaries, anisotropic proton motion and latent heat associated with transitions can influence how an ice giant loses heat over geological time. These effects remain model-dependent because no direct sample from either planet has been obtained.
What remains uncertain
Researchers infer possible superionic layers by combining laboratory measurements with interior models. The exact depth, thickness and structure of any such layer depend on each planet’s composition, temperature profile, pressure history and the relevant water phase diagram. “Uranus and Neptune contain superionic ice” is therefore a scientifically plausible model outcome, not a direct observation.
Common misconceptions resolved
“Ice VII is superionic ice.”
Not by definition. Ice VII is the bcc molecular crystal. It can become a starting material for a superionic transition when heated and compressed, and shocked ice-VII experiments can show superionic signatures, but the names refer to different hydrogen dynamics.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Superionic means the whole sample is liquid.”
No. The oxygen sublattice remains crystalline. Only the proton component behaves in a liquid-like way, so superionic ice is neither an ordinary solid nor an ordinary liquid.
“Every superionic phase is fcc.”
No. Fcc oxygen is one important superionic structure, while bcc and P21/c superionic fields are also discussed. The oxygen lattice depends on pressure, temperature and path.
“High conductivity alone proves superionic ice.”
Conductivity must be interpreted with structural and thermodynamic data. Ice VII itself conducts through pressure-dependent carriers, and a conductivity change can arise from defects or melting. Strong evidence combines transport with diffraction, density, optical response or fusion-enthalpy measurements.
How to identify the phases in a paper or experiment
- Check the oxygen lattice. Look for bcc, fcc or P21/c assignments from X-ray or neutron diffraction.
- Ask what hydrogen is doing. A molecular hydrogen-bond network indicates ice VII; rapid, delocalized proton diffusion indicates a superionic state.
- Match the pressure-temperature path. Record whether the sample was compressed statically, shocked, heated at fixed pressure or followed through decompression.
- Look for independent transport evidence. Electrical or optical conductivity should be considered alongside structural data rather than treated as a standalone label.
- Check the transition signature. Abrupt conductivity or density changes can mark an fcc superionic boundary, whereas a P21/c transition may appear continuous.
- Separate phase names from sample history. A report may call the starting material ice VII even after the hydrogen sublattice has entered a superionic regime.
Bottom line
Ice VII is a pressure-stabilized, bcc molecular crystal with disordered hydrogen bonds and limited, pressure-dependent ionic transport. Superionic ice is a high-pressure, high-temperature state—or family of states—in which an ordered oxygen lattice coexists with rapidly diffusing protons. That mobile hydrogen sublattice explains its much greater conductivity and makes superionic water a leading candidate for conducting layers inside Uranus and Neptune. The two terms are related through phase transitions, but they should not be used interchangeably.
