BattleShip is an unofficial, open-source native PC port of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64. It targets Windows, Linux and macOS, with Android described as planned or in progress. The project is built from a community decompilation and native libraries rather than a generated, self-contained AI remake. You still need to provide your own legally obtained, matching N64 ROM.
What BattleShip actually is
BattleShip recreates the N64 game as a desktop application. Its README identifies support for both the US NTSC-U v1.0 release and the Japanese release, Nintendo All-Star! Dairantou Smash Brothers. The port uses the VetriTheRetri/ssb-decomp-re decompilation as its game-code foundation, libultraship for PC-native rendering, audio and input, and Torch to extract assets from a ROM during the build.

That means it is not an official Nintendo release, a commercial PC edition or a prepackaged ROM download. It is a fan-developed compatibility and enhancement project whose build process uses a copy of the original game supplied by the user.

The project’s own documentation says, “As of now, this is no longer a pure AI project.” That wording acknowledges that AI may have been involved at an earlier stage, but it does not describe the current project as an untouched machine-generated dump.

The stronger evidence is technical provenance. BattleShip sits on top of a substantial matching decompilation, native platform code and asset-extraction tooling. Its documentation also describes contributions such as playtesting, bug fixes, modding knowledge and feature suggestions. Those are conventional software-development inputs that can be inspected, tested and maintained by contributors.
“Not AI slop” should therefore be read as a statement about how the project is being developed, not as a claim that no contributor ever used an AI tool. The repository’s architecture, build requirements and community work provide a more useful way to evaluate it than a label alone.
How the port is built
- Start with the decompilation. The underlying project is a matching decompilation: its success criterion is a byte-for-byte match against a baserom supplied by the user.
- Supply a supported ROM. The repository does not include Nintendo’s baserom or a packaged asset dump. Torch reads the user-provided ROM and extracts the required assets at build time.
- Compile the native front end. libultraship replaces the original console-facing rendering, audio and input layers with PC-native implementations.
- Run the resulting application. The documented desktop targets are Windows, Linux and macOS. Android is identified as planned or in progress rather than a completed, established release target.
This design keeps copyrighted game data out of the source repository while allowing a user with a legitimate dump to produce a working build.

ROM requirements and legal limits
You need a legally owned ROM from one of the supported releases. The documentation lists these specific targets:

A different revision, altered dump or incorrectly identified file will not work simply because it has the right filename. Verify the checksum against the project’s published values before troubleshooting compilation or runtime problems. BattleShip’s repository states that it contains no Nintendo code, textures, audio, models, text, ROM data or other copyrighted assets, so obtaining the ROM is the user’s responsibility.

Windows, Linux and macOS are the desktop platforms identified by the project. Linux support makes a Steam Deck experiment plausible because SteamOS is Linux-based, but the available project description does not establish a dedicated Steam Deck package, verified controller profile or official Deck support. Treat Deck use as an unsupported Linux setup unless the project’s current documentation says otherwise.
Android should be treated similarly: it is described as planned or in progress, not as a platform with the same established support level as the desktop targets.

How to approach a build
The exact commands and dependencies can change with the repository, so follow the current README for the selected operating system. The reliable sequence is:
- Choose the correct US or Japanese release and confirm that your dump matches the documented SHA-1 and MD5 checksums.
- Install the compiler, build tools and platform dependencies listed for your operating system.
- Clone the BattleShip source and its required submodules or dependencies, if the current setup instructions request them.
- Point the build configuration at your verified ROM; do not place a downloaded ROM or Nintendo assets into a public repository.
- Build the project so Torch can extract assets and libultraship can compile the native renderer, audio and input layers.
- Launch the generated executable and configure the controller, stick ranges and optional controls.
Common failure points
The build rejects the ROM
Check the checksum first. A revision other than US NTSC-U v1.0 or Japanese v1.0, a bad dump or a modified file will fail even when the game title appears correct.
The game starts but controls feel wrong
Review the port’s input mapping and configurable stick ranges. Modern controllers may need different thresholds from an original N64 pad.

A feature described online is missing
Separate documented desktop functionality from work marked planned or in progress, particularly Android and any platform-specific packaging.
You expected an official PC release
BattleShip is an unofficial fan project. It does not represent a Nintendo port, licensing deal or replacement for an original legally owned copy.
Bottom line for prospective players
BattleShip is a technically grounded way to run the N64 version of Super Smash Bros. on a computer, provided you own a compatible ROM and are willing to build or configure the project. Its decompilation base, native libraries, asset extraction and documented community contributions explain why calling it merely AI-generated is misleading. At the same time, it remains an unofficial project: support differs by platform, Android is not established as complete, and a Steam Deck setup should be considered a Linux experiment rather than a verified product.
