Super Mario Galaxy vs. Super Mario Odyssey: Which Should You Play First?

For most players, start with Super Mario Odyssey. Its globe-spanning sandbox, hidden Power Moons and Cappy’s ability to capture enemies, animals and objects make it the more flexible introduction to modern 3D Mario. Choose Super Mario Galaxy first if you specifically want a more directed cosmic adventure built around gravity, planet-hopping challenges and recovering Power Stars.

There is no objectively correct order. This is a fit-based recommendation drawn from Nintendo’s descriptions of each game, not a claim about review scores, completion time or player consensus.

The quick decision

If you want… Play first Why
A large world to explore at your own pace Super Mario Odyssey Its globe-trotting kingdoms hide Power Moons and optional discoveries.
A new ability that changes how Mario interacts with the world Super Mario Odyssey Cappy provides cap throws, cap jumps and captures of objects, animals and enemies.
Gravity-based platforming and a cosmic setting Super Mario Galaxy Mario travels across the universe while pursuing Power Stars stolen by Bowser.
A more clearly ordered sequence of challenges Super Mario Galaxy Its adventure is organized around planets, gravity shifts and Star objectives rather than a globe-spanning sandbox.
Two players on one Nintendo Switch Super Mario Odyssey Nintendo lists TV, tabletop and handheld play, with one or two players on one system.
A physical copy that includes a second game Super Mario Galaxy The cited physical Switch release is Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2.
HDR and listed GameShare support on Switch 2 Super Mario Odyssey Nintendo’s June 5, 2025 update listing names improved display support, HDR and GameShare compatibility.

If none of those preferences is strong, Odyssey is the safer first choice because its exploration lets you spend time with the movement and discovery systems without requiring a particular appetite for gravity-focused stages.

What each game is trying to do

Super Mario Odyssey: a globe-trotting sandbox

Nintendo describes Super Mario Odyssey as an adventure through places far from the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario travels between distinct kingdoms, looking for Power Moons while using Cappy as both a movement tool and a way to take control of things in the environment. Nintendo’s official description calls it “a massive, globe-trotting 3D adventure” with Mario’s new ally Cappy.

The important distinction is not simply that the game has many locations. Each area is designed as a space to investigate. A route that appears to lead to one objective can contain side paths, environmental puzzles, hidden rooms or a creature that changes how Mario moves. Power Moons are the main collectible and progression currency, so exploration is not separate from advancement: looking around is part of how you move forward.

That makes Odyssey a strong first game for someone who likes making their own short-term goals. You can pursue the obvious objective, stop to test a cap throw, climb a structure that caught your eye or return to a familiar kingdom with a new idea. The game’s identity comes from combining movement, experimentation and searching rather than presenting one single route through every area.

Super Mario Galaxy: a cosmic, gravity-driven adventure

Super Mario Galaxy follows Mario as he tries to rescue Princess Peach and recover Power Stars stolen by Bowser. Nintendo presents it as a gravity-defying adventure across the universe. Instead of one connected globe, the game sends Mario through a sequence of planets and space-based challenges whose central idea is that gravity can pull him around spherical worlds and unusual surfaces.

Power Stars provide the main collectible and progression loop. The setting and level design are built to make changes in gravity feel central to movement: a jump can become a launch around a small planet, and the surface beneath Mario may not remain “down” in the conventional sense. If that premise sounds more appealing than searching a large kingdom for optional discoveries, Galaxy is the better starting point.

Galaxy’s appeal is therefore concentrated. The question in a stage is often how to read the current planet, manage a gravity shift and reach the Star objective. That does not make it a lesser exploration game; it means its exploration is framed by the next cosmic challenge rather than by a large kingdom that invites you to wander in several directions.

The mechanics that determine the choice

Cappy’s captures in Odyssey

Cappy gives Mario three linked abilities: cap throws, cap jumps and captures. A throw can attack or interact with something at a distance; a cap jump can extend movement; and a capture lets Mario control a compatible object, animal or enemy. The result is a game in which the question is often not only “Where can Mario jump?” but also “What in this area can Mario become?”

Captures are temporary tools rather than a replacement for Mario. They open routes, provide different movement properties and solve environmental problems. If you enjoy experimenting with a new interaction and then looking for another use for it, Odyssey’s signature mechanic should guide your decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cappy also changes how you inspect a room. A suspicious platform may be a launch point, an enemy may offer a movement option, and an object that looks decorative may become relevant once captured. The exact possibilities vary by environment, but the core habit is consistent: test the world instead of treating every obstacle as something Mario must clear with a standard jump.

Gravity and planet traversal in Galaxy

Galaxy’s defining tool is the way gravity reshapes platforming. Mario moves across small planets and other celestial surfaces, with the direction of gravity changing as the level demands. The objective remains concrete—recover a Power Star—but reaching it can involve orbiting a planetoid, crossing curved terrain or timing jumps around a gravitational pull.

This structure favors players who like a clear platforming premise and stages that repeatedly reinterpret movement. You are not collecting a roster of controllable creatures; you are learning to read the relationship between Mario, the planet and gravity.

For a first-time player, the key adjustment is mental rather than numerical. “Down” can change as Mario crosses a planet, so your usual sense of a jump’s arc and landing surface must follow the stage’s gravitational setup. If that sounds like an appealing puzzle layered onto platforming, Galaxy’s movement system is likely to click quickly.

Exploration and progression: Power Moons versus Power Stars

Feature Super Mario Odyssey Super Mario Galaxy
Primary collectible Power Moons Power Stars
World structure Globe-spanning kingdoms that invite free-form investigation Cosmic sequence of planets and gravity-focused challenges
What usually drives progress Finding enough Moons and completing objectives in each kingdom Recovering Stars from platforming challenges across the universe
Signature interaction Cappy’s throws, jumps and captures Gravity-based traversal and planet movement
Typical player question “What can I discover or capture here?” “How do I use this planet’s gravity to reach the Star?”

Choose the collectible loop that sounds motivating. Power Moons suit players who like scanning a place for secrets, revisiting a familiar area with a new idea and deciding which discovery to pursue next. Power Stars suit players who prefer a more explicit objective in a cosmic series of challenges. Neither loop is presented here as inherently better; they ask for different kinds of attention.

There is also a difference in how progress feels moment to moment. In Odyssey, a detour can be productive because the detour itself may reveal a Moon or a new use for Cappy. In Galaxy, the current planet and Star objective keep attention tighter. If you find open-ended searching energizing, lean Odyssey; if too many possible directions feel distracting, lean Galaxy.

Which game is easier to approach first?

“Easier” can mean several things, and the available official descriptions do not establish comparative difficulty. The more useful question is which game explains its appeal in terms you already enjoy.

  • Choose Odyssey for immediate experimentation. Cappy’s capture system gives you a visible, repeatable way to test interactions in almost every location.
  • Choose Galaxy for a focused platforming premise. If changing gravity and reaching a specific Star sound exciting, its cosmic structure communicates the goal quickly.
  • Choose based on tolerance for searching. Odyssey asks you to notice details and optional paths in broad kingdoms. Galaxy emphasizes navigating the current planet or challenge toward a Star.
  • Choose based on how you learn movement. Odyssey teaches through trying different interactions in a space; Galaxy teaches through reading gravity and adapting jumps to curved or shifting surfaces.

These are descriptions of the games’ structures, not claims that one has a lower failure rate or requires fewer hours. Nintendo’s product information does not provide a comparative difficulty ranking, completion-time estimate or player-success statistic.

When the order matters—and when it does not

Starting with Odyssey

Starting with Odyssey makes sense when you want the newer-feeling sandbox first: large kingdoms, a high volume of optional discoveries and a companion mechanic that changes what Mario can do. You can then approach Galaxy as a contrast, moving from a world built around investigation to one built around cosmic platforming and gravity.

This order is especially practical when you are buying one game now and deciding later whether to add the other. Odyssey stands on its own as a globe-trotting adventure, while a later Galaxy session can feel deliberately more focused because its planets and Power Stars establish a different rhythm.

Starting with Galaxy

Starting with Galaxy makes sense when its premise is the reason you are interested in the comparison. A universe-spanning rescue mission, Power Stars and gravity-defying planets are not minor variations on Odyssey; they are the game’s organizing ideas. Playing it first lets you experience that focused structure without expecting every 3D Mario game to behave like a sandbox.

Galaxy is also the natural first pick if the physical package matters to you. Nintendo’s cited physical Switch release pairs Galaxy with Galaxy 2, so the purchase is explicitly a two-game package rather than a standalone Galaxy cartridge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Playing both in either order

The games do not require a story order based on the information Nintendo publishes for these products. Their core settings, collectibles and movement systems are distinct enough that either sequence remains understandable. The practical benefit of choosing an order is expectation-setting: the first game teaches you which type of 3D Mario play you personally find most rewarding.

Two-player and play-mode considerations

Nintendo lists Odyssey for TV, tabletop and handheld play, with one or two players on one system. That makes it the only game in this comparison for which the cited product information explicitly identifies one-system two-player support. If you are choosing for a shared session, confirm the current regional product page and the controller setup required for your console.

No equivalent two-player player-count claim is established here for Galaxy. Do not buy it assuming that the same local multiplayer description applies. The safest comparison is to treat Odyssey as the explicitly documented one- or two-player option and Galaxy as the choice driven by its cosmic single-game structure unless Nintendo’s current listing says otherwise.

Switch and Switch 2 editions

Super Mario Odyssey

Nintendo lists Super Mario Odyssey as a Nintendo Switch game with a physical edition and an original release date of October 27, 2017. Nintendo also lists it as supported on Nintendo Switch 2. The Switch 2 update is dated June 5, 2025 and lists improved display support, HDR and GameShare compatibility.

Those features describe Nintendo’s listed update information; exact availability can depend on the current regional support page and the hardware configuration you use. Check Nintendo’s current compatibility details if a particular display mode or sharing feature is essential to your purchase.

The cited physical Nintendo Switch release is Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, released October 2, 2025. It is not a standalone physical Galaxy cartridge in that release: the package contains both games. Nintendo also lists the Galaxy games as available individually as digital titles.

Nintendo lists the Galaxy release as supported on Switch 2 and describes updated visuals and features. The Switch 2 update listing is dated October 2, 2025 and mentions improved display support and Joy-Con 2 mouse mode. Nintendo’s product and announcement information describes output of up to 4K for Galaxy in supported circumstances; the announcement also notes 60 frames per second for 4K output. A compatible display is required, and the exact behavior depends on the console, display and current regional support information.

What to check before buying

  1. Confirm the product format. Odyssey’s cited physical edition is a standalone game. The cited physical Galaxy product contains both Galaxy games.
  2. Decide physical versus digital. Nintendo lists the Galaxy games individually as digital titles, while the physical listing is the two-game package.
  3. Match the console. Both products are listed as supported on Switch 2, but update features and display behavior should be checked on Nintendo’s current regional support pages.
  4. Check your display. Galaxy’s up-to-4K description applies only in supported circumstances with a compatible display; it is not an automatic result on every setup.
  5. Do not assume a current price. Prices, stock and retailer terms change, and Nintendo’s product information cited here does not establish a universal price.

How to choose in five minutes

  1. Pick your preferred setting. Select Odyssey for far-flung kingdoms and a globe-trotting journey; select Galaxy for planets, space and changing gravity.
  2. Pick your preferred verb. Select Odyssey if “capture and experiment” sounds better; select Galaxy if “navigate gravity and reach the Star” does.
  3. Decide how much optional searching you want. Odyssey’s Power Moon structure rewards investigating a broad area. Galaxy’s Power Star structure keeps the current cosmic challenge prominent.
  4. Account for local multiplayer. Odyssey is listed for one or two players on one Nintendo Switch. If that mode matters, it is the only one of these two for which the cited product information makes that player count explicit.
  5. Check the edition before buying. Odyssey’s cited physical release is standalone. The cited physical Galaxy release includes Galaxy 2, while Nintendo also lists the games individually as digital titles.
  6. Match the display promise to your hardware. Choose Galaxy for its listed 4K possibility only if you have a compatible display and have verified the current support details.
  7. Set a budget from the actual listing. Compare the current retailer price and package contents rather than assuming the two products cost the same or that a bundle is cheaper.

Common mismatches to avoid

  • Buying the Galaxy bundle expecting only one game. The physical release named by Nintendo contains both Galaxy and Galaxy 2.
  • Expecting Odyssey to be a linear planet sequence. Its defining structure is a globe-spanning sandbox with Power Moon discovery.
  • Expecting Galaxy to use Cappy’s capture system. Its defining mechanic is gravity-based movement and planet traversal.
  • Assuming 4K is automatic. Nintendo qualifies Galaxy’s up-to-4K output as dependent on supported circumstances and a compatible display.
  • Assuming the games have the same multiplayer listing. Odyssey’s cited description explicitly lists one or two players; no matching player-count statement is established here for Galaxy.
  • Confusing a Switch 2 update with a new game edition. Nintendo lists updates and support information; verify what is included with the product you are purchasing.
  • Treating the recommendation as a quality ranking. The choice is an editorial fit based on the official gameplay descriptions, not a measured comparison of scores, sales, length or consensus.
  • Using a display feature as the only reason to choose. Resolution, HDR and frame-rate notes matter only if your console, display and preferred play style align with the game itself.
