Yes, Super Mario Galaxy can run on an Android phone through the Dolphin emulator, but this is emulation rather than a Nintendo Android release. Dolphin’s compatibility list labels the game Playable, which is a useful general signal—not a guarantee of identical speed on every phone. The game’s shake and pointer mechanics also make a gyro-capable Bluetooth controller a better fit than touch controls or a button-only pad.
Is there an official Android version of Super Mario Galaxy?
No Nintendo Android edition is identified in the official product listings covered for this game. Nintendo’s listings cover the original Wii release and the current Nintendo Switch release. On Android, the practical route is to run the Wii game with Dolphin, an independent emulator that publishes Android builds.

That distinction matters because the two platforms have different update, performance and save systems. An Android installation depends on Dolphin’s build, your phone’s hardware and your graphics settings. Nintendo’s supported release runs on Switch hardware and receives Nintendo’s own software updates.

| Android with Dolphin | Dolphin publishes Android packages, and its compatibility result marks Super Mario Galaxy “Playable.” | Emulation is feasible, but speed and control quality vary by phone, controller and settings. |
| Original Wii | Nintendo’s product description defines the Wii Remote shake and pointer functions as part of play. | The original control design is motion- and pointer-oriented rather than ordinary gamepad-only play. |
| Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 | Nintendo lists a supported Switch release with enhanced presentation and additional features. | This is the official hardware path, with Nintendo’s own update and save support. |
How compatible is Super Mario Galaxy with Dolphin on Android?
Dolphin’s compatibility-list label Playable means the game is considered usable in the emulator’s broad compatibility classification. It does not promise a fixed frame rate, identical graphics or flawless behavior on every Android device. Android phones differ substantially in processor, GPU, thermal limits and graphics-driver behavior, so one model may need different settings from another.

There is no single “Android performance” result that applies to all phones. Treat the compatibility label as a starting point, then test the game on your own device. If a build runs poorly, that does not automatically mean the game is incompatible; it may indicate a graphics backend or performance setting that needs adjustment.
Choose the Dolphin build carefully
Dolphin’s download page separates stable releases from development versions:
| Build channel | Publishing pattern | Testing level | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stable | Released every few months | More tested than development builds | Start here when you want a predictable baseline. |
| Development | Can be published several times per day | Less tested; behavior can change more often | Use when you need a newer fix or are deliberately testing changes. |
Beginning with a current stable Android build gives you a known baseline. Development builds can be useful, but their rapid cadence makes it harder to tell whether a change in performance, controls or saves came from your settings or from the emulator revision itself.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
A sensible first-run sequence
- Download the Android package from Dolphin’s official download page. Select a current stable release unless you have a specific reason to test development software.
- Install Dolphin and add your legally obtained game image. Keep the game file in a location that remains available to the emulator after Android storage permissions are granted.
- Launch the game with default graphics settings first. This gives you a baseline before changing several variables at once.
- Adjust graphics and the available rendering backend for your phone. Change one setting at a time and retest the same section of the game so you can identify which change helped or hurt.
- Configure motion and pointer input before judging playability. A game that boots correctly can still feel impractical if the spin, aiming or Star Bit actions are not mapped comfortably.
- Once the game is stable, make an in-game save and back it up. Do this before experimenting with a development build or major configuration change.
What controller do you need for Mario Galaxy on an Android phone?
Super Mario Galaxy was designed around Wii Remote features, not just buttons. Nintendo’s Wii description says, “Mario’s newest move – the spin move – is performed by giving the Wii Remote a quick shake.” The same description explains that the Wii Remote pointer collects Star Bits and can throw them at enemies.
For that reason, the most natural Android setup is a Bluetooth controller with a gyro or other motion sensors and a usable pointing method. A phone touchscreen can approximate pointer movement, but it is usually less comfortable for sustained play. A controller with buttons but no motion capability may require remapping and may not reproduce every motion action comfortably.
| Input method | Motion actions | Pointer actions | Practical result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gyro-capable Bluetooth controller | Best match for shake-based spin actions | Can provide a more natural aiming method when supported by the setup | Closest fit to the game’s control design on Android. |
| Button-only Bluetooth controller | Requires a mapped substitute for shaking | Needs a mapped stick, touch overlay or another substitute | Usable in some configurations, but less complete and less comfortable. |
| Touchscreen controls | Can approximate motion through on-screen controls | Can approximate pointing directly on the display | No extra accessory, but precision and comfort can suffer. |
Controller setup checklist
- Pair the controller with Android before opening Dolphin.
- In Dolphin’s controller configuration, map ordinary buttons first, then assign the motion or pointer functions required by the game.
- Test the spin action, pointer movement, Star Bit collection and throwing before starting a long session.
- If a button-only controller forces an awkward substitute, try the touchscreen pointer or switch to a motion-capable controller rather than judging the entire game from an incomplete mapping.
Because Dolphin builds and Android devices vary, the exact names and positions of configuration controls can differ. The important test is functional: you should be able to perform the shake-driven spin and use the pointer without fighting the layout.

Will your save survive a Dolphin update?
Your most durable record should be the game’s normal in-game save. Dolphin save states are convenient for quick retries, but they are more exposed to emulator-version and configuration changes. A savestate that works in one build may not be a dependable long-term archive after changing builds or settings.
Use two layers of saves
- Save through the game’s own menu or checkpoints. Treat this as the primary progress record.
- Use a Dolphin savestate only as a convenience. It is useful for retrying a difficult moment, not as your only copy of progress.
- Back up the in-game save data before changing Dolphin channels. Do this before moving from stable to development, installing a different build or making a major configuration change.
- After the update, verify the in-game save first. Start the game normally and confirm that your progress loads before relying on any older savestate.
This approach separates durable progress from quick experimentation. It also gives you a recovery path if a development build or a changed graphics configuration causes a savestate to behave unexpectedly.
Do Nintendo’s 2026 updates apply to the Android version?
No. Nintendo’s update history applies to the Switch software, while Dolphin updates affect the emulator. Updating Dolphin does not turn the Wii game image into the Switch edition, and installing a Switch update does not update an Android Dolphin installation.

| Update system | Current information | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch release | Nintendo Support lists Ver. 1.3.1, released February 5, 2026. | Applies to the Switch software. |
| Switch 2 requirement | Nintendo says the software must be at Ver. 1.2.0 or later to play on Nintendo Switch 2. | Applies to Nintendo’s console software, not Dolphin on Android. |
| Dolphin stable channel | Stable releases arrive every few months. | Updates the Android emulator and its behavior. |
| Dolphin development channel | Builds can be published several times per day and are less tested. | Updates the emulator more frequently, with greater change risk. |
Nintendo’s support note says, “Save data will still be available for use after downloading the update.” That assurance is for the Switch software. For Dolphin, keep your in-game save backup before changing emulator builds because the emulator’s development channel is actively changing.

If you want Nintendo’s supported release instead of an Android emulation setup, the Switch edition is the straightforward alternative. Nintendo lists Switch 2 compatibility as “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” The product page also lists enhanced 1080p resolution on Switch, 4K on Switch 2, an improved user interface, extra Storybook Chapters and a new Assist Mode.
| Official-release detail | Nintendo’s listed information |
|---|---|
| Switch 2 compatibility | Supported; game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch. |
| Resolution enhancements | Enhanced 1080p on Switch; 4K on Switch 2. |
| Additional features | Improved UI, extra Storybook Chapters and a new Assist Mode. |
| File size | 3.6 GB. |
| Release date | October 2, 2025. |
| Cloud saves | Save Data Cloud support through Nintendo Switch Online. |
The official release also gives you Nintendo’s versioned update path and console-targeted performance. That is a different proposition from Dolphin, where the result depends on your Android hardware, emulator build and input configuration.
How to troubleshoot common Android problems
The game starts, but performance is inconsistent
- Confirm which Dolphin channel you are using. Return to a current stable build if you began with a development build.
- Change graphics or backend settings one at a time, then retest the same scene.
- Remember that the “Playable” label is not a device-specific performance guarantee.
The spin or pointer action does not work
- Check the controller mapping for motion and pointer functions, not only the ordinary buttons.
- Use a gyro-capable Bluetooth controller if a button-only mapping feels incomplete.
- As a fallback, test Dolphin’s touchscreen approximation for pointer actions and motion substitutes.
A savestate fails after an emulator change
- Close the savestate workflow and start the game normally.
- Load the most recent in-game save instead.
- Restore from the backup you made before changing builds or configuration.
You are unsure whether an update is relevant
- Check whether you are playing the Wii game through Dolphin or the Nintendo Switch release.
- Switch update numbers, including Ver. 1.3.1, do not describe Dolphin versions.
- Dolphin’s stable and development labels describe emulator builds, not Nintendo game editions.
Which option fits your priorities?
| Priority | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Play on an Android phone you already own | Dolphin Android | Android builds are available and Galaxy is classified as Playable, subject to device performance. |
| Most complete motion and pointer experience on Android | Dolphin plus a gyro-capable Bluetooth controller | The controller better matches the Wii Remote shake and pointer design. |
| Simple, supported hardware target | Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 release | Nintendo lists the software as supported and provides its own update path. |
| Quick retry points | Dolphin savestates | Convenient for experimentation, but they should not replace in-game saves. |
| Long-term save resilience on Android | In-game saves plus backups | They are less dependent on a particular Dolphin build or configuration than a single savestate. |
The practical Android answer is therefore conditional: Dolphin makes Super Mario Galaxy playable on compatible phones, but the best experience depends on stable emulator software and complete motion/pointer input. If you want Nintendo’s supported release, enhanced presentation and console-oriented update and save handling, use the Switch edition instead.
