In Summoner’s Greed, “damage,” “stun,” and “support” describe what a monster contributes on the battlefield, not three rigid classes. Damage monsters remove enemies with attacks and special abilities; control monsters interrupt movement and actions with stuns, freezes, or slows; support monsters increase allies’ damage or attack speed, or otherwise make a formation safer. One monster can combine roles, and its usefulness changes with placement, enemy elements, and the exact wording of its ability.
The practical way to build a team is to compare each monster’s primary contribution, target coverage, control reliability, buff range, and elemental matchup. The examples below come from mechanics descriptions on the community-maintained Summoner’s Greed Fandom wiki, so treat them as references rather than a current tier list; abilities and balance can change.

What the three monster roles actually mean
The role labels are a planning framework. They help you decide what a slot must accomplish during a wave, but they do not define mutually exclusive categories in the game’s code. A monster that attacks may also stun. A totem may never attack yet still be one of the most valuable units in a damage formation. A slow can function as support because it protects the team by controlling enemies rather than by buffing allies.

| Stun, freeze, or slow | Delay or interrupt enemies so they cannot advance or act normally | What status does the ability apply, how long does it last, and does the attack reliably apply it? |
| Support | Increase allied damage or attack speed, or hinder enemies to improve the team’s output | Is the effect adjacent, area-wide, or global? Where must the monster be placed? |
Use “primary role” rather than assuming a permanent class. An electric attacker might be both a damage dealer and a stunner; an ice attacker might deal area damage while occasionally freezing; and a slowing totem may contribute no direct damage at all.

Damage monsters: the direct clearing role
What counts as damage
A damage monster contributes by reducing enemy health with its ordinary attack, special attack, or both. The important distinction is not simply the attack stat shown on a card. You need to know the attack pattern and where the attack can reach.
- Single-target damage focuses on one enemy at a time and can be useful against a high-health threat.
- Area damage affects multiple enemies in a radius, lane, or other defined region and is valuable when waves bunch up.
- Global or wide-reaching effects can influence enemies across the map when the individual ability specifies that reach.
Coverage determines whether a monster keeps contributing when enemies spread out or arrive in a group. A slower, hard-hitting attack may be appropriate for durable targets, while frequent area attacks can clear crowds before they reach the gate. The available mechanics references do not establish a comprehensive, current damage ranking, so do not treat any example as universally best-in-slot.
How to compare two damage candidates
- Check target coverage. Read whether the attack is single-target, area, lane-based, or global. Do not infer coverage from the monster’s element or appearance.
- Check the special attack separately. A normal attack and a special attack may have different ranges, target counts, status effects, and cooldowns.
- Check the elemental matchup. Fire is described as strong against lightning and weak against ice; ice is strong against fire and weak against lightning; lightning is strong against ice and weak against fire. These relationships should influence your choice for the enemies in the current stage.
- Check for secondary control. If the attack can stun, freeze, or slow, count that as additional value, but verify that the specific attack actually applies the status.
For example, a monster with modest raw damage but dependable area control can buy enough time for a stronger attacker to finish a wave. Conversely, a high-damage monster placed where it cannot reach the relevant lane may contribute less than a weaker unit with better coverage.

Stun
A stunned enemy cannot move, attack, or use special powers. That makes stun a tempo tool: it creates a window in which your damage dealers can attack without the enemy advancing or retaliating. Electric or type-less attacks can cause stun, but the element alone does not guarantee it. The individual ability must state or demonstrate that it applies stun.
Sparky is a concrete mechanics example: its monster-page description specifies an area stun lasting two seconds. That makes Sparky useful as an illustration of area control, not proof that it is the strongest stun option for every stage. The duration, affected area, and ability cooldown all matter when you evaluate it.

Freeze
Freeze has a similar immediate effect: a frozen enemy cannot move, attack, or use special powers. Ice attacks can apply freeze, but not every ice attack does. Read the ability rather than assuming that an ice element automatically freezes.
The wiki treats stun and freeze as distinct effects for immunity purposes. An enemy that resists one may not necessarily resist the other. At the same time, a shared control cooldown prevents a team from permanently locking enemies by alternating stun and freeze without interruption. In practice, control should create damage opportunities, not replace damage altogether.

Slow and control-oriented support
Slow reduces the pace at which enemies approach the gate. It is less absolute than stun or freeze because a slowed enemy can still move and act, but it increases the time available for attacks and can smooth out difficult waves. Sluggy is described as a totem that slows enemies, making it an example of support through enemy control rather than direct ally buffs.
How to judge control reliability
- Application: Does every attack apply the effect, or only a special attack or chance-based hit?
- Coverage: Is the effect single-target, area-based, or global?
- Duration: How long does the enemy remain unable to move or act?
- Cooldown: Can the monster apply control often enough to matter during the wave?
- Immunity: Does the stage contain enemies that ignore stun, freeze, or another status?
Do not label an attack a “stun monster” merely because it is electric, or a “freeze monster” merely because it is ice. Status effects are properties of individual attacks.
Support monsters: multiplying the team’s output
Ally buffs
Support monsters improve other units rather than competing with them for damage. Mighty and Speedy are clear examples of nonattacking totems. Mighty increases the attack damage of adjacent monsters, while Speedy increases the attack speed of adjacent monsters. Their value depends on the attackers standing inside the buff range, so the same totem can be excellent in one formation and nearly irrelevant in another.

The buffs page also identifies Horus as an attack-speed buffer and Hellhound as an attack-damage buffer. Use those descriptions to understand the type of contribution; the correct choice still depends on the current ability values, placement, and the damage dealers you are supporting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSupport through enemy control
Support is broader than “a monster that raises a stat.” Sluggy’s slow supports the whole formation by extending the time enemies spend in attack range. A control monster can therefore occupy a support slot even when it has no ally-facing buff. The decision is whether the time or safety it creates is worth more than another direct attacker in that position.
Why adjacency changes the decision
When a buff applies only to adjacent monsters, placing the support unit is part of calculating its value. A damage dealer receiving both an attack-damage and an attack-speed buff may gain more than a second unbuffed attacker, but only if the formation keeps the relevant units adjacent and within the monsters’ actual range. Check the current descriptions for the precise shape and restrictions of each aura.
Element and role are separate axes
Elemental matchup and battlefield role answer different questions. The element helps indicate how well an attack performs against a type of enemy; the role explains whether the monster is killing, interrupting, or amplifying. A lightning monster can be a damage dealer, a stunner, or both. An ice monster can deal damage without freezing. Do not substitute one axis for the other.
| Attacking element | Described strength | Described weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | Lightning | Ice |
| Ice | Fire | Lightning |
| Lightning | Ice | Fire |
These relationships are a reason to change your damage lineup for a stage, but they are not a substitute for reading the ability. Some elemental attacks also provide control, while others do not.

How to build a role-balanced team
- Identify the wave’s main threat. Note the enemy elements, whether enemies arrive in groups or as durable individuals, and whether a special ability can punish an unprepared formation.
- Choose a reliable damage core. Select attackers whose target coverage fits the wave. Favor area coverage for crowds and appropriate elemental matchups for the enemies you expect.
- Add one or more control answers. Use stun, freeze, or slow to interrupt dangerous advances. Confirm the exact status, duration, and reach of each ability.
- Fill support positions. Add Mighty, Speedy, Horus, Hellhound, Sluggy, or another support option when its buff or control effect improves the specific damage core you selected.
- Place units according to their mechanics. Put adjacent-range buffers next to the attackers they are meant to improve. Keep area controllers where their effect can cover the lane or choke point.
- Observe the failure point. If enemies reach the gate, determine whether the problem was insufficient damage, a missed elemental matchup, poor coverage, control immunity, or a support aura that was out of range. Replace the role that failed instead of changing the entire team at random.
“Toteming” and practical placement
The wiki uses “toteming” for placing a strong damage dealer between buffing totems. In a typical version of that arrangement, the attacker is positioned so that adjacent damage and attack-speed buffs both apply. This is a common strategy, not a universal formation requirement.
Toteming is worthwhile when the attacker has enough reach to keep firing from that location and the totems’ auras cover the intended target. It is less useful when the damage dealer’s attack cannot reach the active lane, when enemies bypass the buffed area, or when a stage requires control in the same slots. Treat formation space as a trade-off among damage, control, and coverage.
Examples without turning them into a tier list
| Monster or example | Primary lesson | What to verify before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Mighty | Adjacent attack-damage buff; nonattacking support totem | Which allies are adjacent and whether the current aura reaches them |
| Speedy | Adjacent attack-speed buff; nonattacking support totem | Whether faster attacks improve the chosen attacker more than another damage slot would |
| Sluggy | Slow as support through enemy control | Slow effectiveness, coverage, and whether enemies resist or remain dangerous while slowed |
| Sparky | Area stun example with a described two-second duration | Actual area, cooldown, immunity, and whether the current wave is vulnerable to stun |
| Slime King | The Joint Revenge guide gives it as an example of a special attack that stuns globally | Current ability wording, cooldown, and the stage’s control rules |
| Horus | Attack-speed buffer example | Buff range and compatibility with nearby attackers |
| Hellhound | Attack-damage buffer example | Buff range and whether the formation can keep high-value attackers inside it |
These examples explain mechanics and evaluation criteria. They do not establish a universal ranking, a guaranteed late-game lineup, or a current best-in-slot choice.
Common mistakes and fixes
Assuming an element guarantees a status effect
Symptom: An electric monster does not stun, or an ice monster does not freeze. Fix: Read the specific normal and special attack descriptions. The element makes an effect possible in some cases, not automatic.

Best Value
Stacking control while neglecting damage
Symptom: Enemies stop briefly but survive every cycle and eventually advance. Fix: Keep enough direct damage to defeat targets during the control windows; the shared control cooldown limits indefinite stalling.
Ignoring elemental matchup
Symptom: A familiar damage dealer performs poorly in one stage. Fix: Compare its element with the enemies in that stage and test another attacker whose element is described as strong against them.
Choosing by reputation instead of the current ability
Symptom: A monster recommended in an old guide underperforms after a balance change. Fix: Confirm the current in-game ability text and treat community examples as mechanics references, not permanent rankings.

What can change over time
The cited mechanics come from a community-maintained wiki, whose buffs and crowd-control page was crawled roughly three months before the material used for this article; individual page revision dates were not established. Game updates can change durations, ranges, damage, cooldowns, immunities, or elemental behavior. Before making a current-meta recommendation, check the live game’s ability descriptions and the stage’s enemy rules.
The durable lesson is the framework: select damage for the enemies and coverage you face, use stun, freeze, or slow to create time, and place support so its buffs or control actually reach the fight. A monster’s role is what it contributes in that formation, not a permanent label attached to its name.
