Evolution and star promotion are different systems in Summoner’s Greed. Evolution uses a specified type and quantity of Evo Gems on eligible monsters. Star promotion is duplicate-summon progression through Bronze, Silver and Gold star bands. Decide what to upgrade by identifying your current bottleneck, checking the exact cost shown in the Evolve Portal, and comparing that cost with leveling the damage dealer or support unit your team actually needs.
The game does not have a reliable, universally correct “first evolution” or a confirmed level at which every monster should be evolved. Costs, eligibility and balance can change, so treat community tables as examples and the in-game portal as the authority before you spend rare gems.

Evolution and promotion are not the same upgrade
Players often use “promotion” and “evolution” interchangeably, but they consume different resources and solve different problems.

Evolution does not require duplicate summons, and duplicate summons do not substitute for evolution gems. Keep the two decisions separate when planning your roster.

How to evolve a monster
The community-maintained Summoner’s Greed Wiki evolution page describes the following interface path. Labels and eligible monsters can change, so use the live game screen for the final check.
- Open the Summoning Chamber.
- Select the Evolve Portal.
- Review the monsters listed as eligible. A monster absent from this list cannot be evolved through that portal at that time.
- Select the monster you are considering. The portal displays the gem family and the number of gems required.
- Confirm that you can replace the spent gems and still fund your other planned upgrades.
- Read the displayed result and confirm the transaction only after checking the current version’s effect.
The portal is more dependable than an old spreadsheet or forum post because it reflects the eligibility and price presented to your account. If a guide gives a different figure, record the in-game figure, region or event context and game version before deciding.
Requirements to check before committing
Being able to see a monster in the Evolve Portal is only the first check. Make sure you have identified the exact gem family, not just the total number of gems in your inventory. Generic Evo Gems, Fire Gems, Ice Gems and Electric or Lightning Gems are separate currencies in the community descriptions. A large generic balance cannot pay a Fire or Lightning bill unless the current client explicitly says so.

Also check the upgrade’s displayed outcome. The useful question is not simply whether the monster becomes stronger, but whether the shown change solves your current failure: insufficient damage, missing control, weak buff coverage or a mode-specific problem. Screenshot or note the requirement if you are waiting to farm, because event rotations and balance changes can make an old note misleading.
Finally, leave a reserve for the rest of your team. Spending every elemental gem on an attractive upgrade can leave the carry under-leveled or prevent a necessary support purchase. Evolution is irreversible resource spending in practical terms, so treat the confirmation screen as a budget decision rather than a routine level-up.
Which evolution gems do you need?
Community documentation identifies generic Evo Gems and elemental gems associated with particular eligible monsters. The broad categories include Fire, Ice and Electric or Lightning gems. The exact gem family is monster-specific; having a large balance of one type does not make every evolution affordable.
Master’s Challenge as a gem source
The wiki says Master’s Challenge unlocks after you summon 18 unique monsters. It describes Evo Gem rewards for completed waves and occasional enemy drops. It also associates elemental evolution gems with Ice Queen’s Tempest, Wrath of the Volcano Goddess and Kami Pantheon’s Retribution. These unlock and reward details come from community pages, not an official mechanics reference, so open the mode’s current description in your game before planning a farming schedule. Check the source before farming
- Confirm whether the portal asks for generic, Fire, Ice or Electric/Lightning gems.
- Check whether the gem is earned in a currently available challenge, wave reward or enemy drop.
- Do not assume an elemental challenge is permanently available or that its reward table is unchanged.
- Farm only after you know the exact quantity displayed for your monster.
Planning a realistic farming route
Start with the number shown for the specific monster, then compare it with the rewards you can currently collect. The community description of Master’s Challenge links gems to completed waves and occasional enemy drops, but it does not establish a universal drop rate or a guaranteed number of gems per run. Therefore, avoid promising a fixed number of runs or hours.

Use a simple inventory plan: write down your starting balance, the target shown in the portal and the other upgrades competing for that currency. Recheck the balance after a few runs rather than assuming every wave pays equally. If an event or challenge is unavailable, pause the plan instead of substituting a different elemental currency. This keeps a historical guide figure from turning into a misleading farming schedule.
Community cost examples—and why they are not a current price list
A 2022 player FAQ on Reddit’s r/SummonersGreed lists these examples:

These numbers show why evolution costs can differ dramatically by monster and element; they do not establish a complete price schedule. The portal’s displayed amount takes precedence over every dated community table.

There is no evidence for one universally best first evolution. Use a bottleneck-based decision instead of copying a tier list that may reflect an earlier balance state.
1. Name the wall you are trying to clear
- Damage wall: your main attackers cannot defeat enemies before they reach the goal.
- Support wall: a damage dealer is strong enough on paper but lacks a needed buff, debuff or survivability effect.
- Crowd-control wall: enemies move or regenerate faster than your stuns, slows or freezes can contain them.
- Mode-specific wall: a challenge has a resistance, wave pattern or rule that makes your normal team inefficient.
An evolution that does not address the active wall may be less valuable than ordinary levels on a unit that does.
2. Start with the central damage dealer when damage is the constraint
A player-written beginner guide recommends putting early coins into the main DPS and nearby buffing units, while avoiding heavy early spending on example stalling units. That is strategy advice, not a rule coded into the game. Read the 2025 beginner guide as a framework: if your carry is the reason a stage fails, compare its next levels or evolution against every alternative before buying a low-impact upgrade.
3. Evaluate support by the job it performs
Do not dismiss every support monster, and do not fund every support monster equally. A support upgrade is worth considering when its buff, debuff, stun, slow or elemental interaction directly fixes your failure condition. If the unit is merely occupying a slot while your carry is under-leveled, coins and gems generally have a clearer immediate use on the carry. The beginner guide’s recommendation to leave some stalling examples unupgraded is a player opinion that should be adapted to your own formation.
4. Compare the portal cost with the expected benefit
Write down the monster’s current role, the gem family and amount shown in the portal, the mode you want to clear, and the alternative use for those resources. A costly evolution can be correct when it removes a progression wall; a cheap evolution can still be wasteful if it changes nothing in the mode you play.

5. Account for farming time and opportunity cost
Rare elemental gems may require challenge runs that could otherwise advance your account. Compare the time to farm the requested amount with leveling a carry, improving a necessary support unit or saving for a different eligible monster. Because current drop rates and reward tables are not established by an official source here, do not convert the historical cost examples into a precise farming-hours estimate.
Decision examples by bottleneck
If a campaign stage fails because the boss survives with a small amount of health, compare the carry’s next several coin levels with the portal evolution. If those levels already provide enough damage, the gem purchase may be unnecessary; if the displayed evolution directly increases the damage type you need, it has a clearer case.
If enemies reach the goal while your damage is adequate, a control or support candidate may be more relevant than another damage evolution. Test whether the unit’s displayed effect changes the timing of the failure. If the stage has an unusual elemental or wave pattern, judge the upgrade in that mode rather than by its performance in a routine farming stage.

A theoretical upgrade that requires an unavailable challenge cannot help today’s wall, while a modest evolution you can fund may let you progress and unlock better farming options.
Evolution versus star promotion: when each makes sense
Choose evolution when you have a defined gem-funded upgrade
Evolution is the relevant choice when the Evolve Portal lists your monster, you possess the required gem type, and the displayed effect addresses your current bottleneck. It is a targeted resource purchase, not a consequence of summoning duplicates.
Choose star promotion when duplicates are already arriving
The 2022 community FAQ describes star progression as nine duplicate-summon steps across Bronze, Silver and Gold bands, with three stars in each band. It further says that duplicates beyond 3 Gold stars convert to gold. This explanation is useful for understanding duplicate value, but it is not a publisher-confirmed specification. Do not spend gems expecting duplicate summons to unlock an evolution, and do not count on the conversion rule without checking your current game behavior.
Do not compare the systems by a single “power per resource” number
Evolution consumes a named gem stock and may unlock a particular effect; promotion depends on summon luck or duplicate access and follows a separate track. Compare them on role, availability, mode benefit and opportunity cost rather than treating one star as equivalent to one evolution.

Does leveling cost more after evolution?
Evolution and leveling use different progression actions: evolution spends the gem amount shown in the Evolve Portal, while leveling uses the coin price shown on the monster’s upgrade screen. The available community material does not document a universal surcharge on level-ups for evolved monsters, nor does it provide an official formula proving that evolved status leaves the price unchanged.

Before committing, note the coin price for the next level, evolve the monster only if the portal benefit is justified, then check the next level price again. That simple before-and-after check is more reliable than assuming an old guide’s multiplier or cost claim still applies. The 2022 FAQ contains cost and multiplier statements that commenters flagged as needing updates, while the newer beginner guide warns that balance recommendations can change.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Following a fixed level threshold
No authoritative source in the available material establishes “always evolve at level 400” or any other universal level. Your carry’s current damage, the stage’s requirements and the portal’s cost matter more than a copied threshold.

Saving the wrong elemental currency
Generic Evo Gems do not replace Fire, Ice or Electric/Lightning requirements when the portal asks for an elemental type. Identify the gem family before farming.
Spending on a support unit without a role test
A support monster that does not change the result of your current mode can wait. Test whether its buff, control or debuff changes the point at which your team fails before committing rare resources.
Assuming community mechanics are official
The evolution wiki, Reddit FAQ and beginner guide are player-maintained or player-written sources. They are useful for terminology and planning, but the live client is the final authority for current eligibility, prices, rewards and balance.
What is confirmed, and what remains changeable?
Pixio’s official company and games pages identify the publisher and list Summoner’s Greed, but they do not provide a detailed evolution or promotion manual. The mechanics described here therefore come from the community wiki, the approximately 2022 Reddit FAQ and the approximately 2025 beginner guide. The newer guide explicitly notes that further balance changes may occur.
For a decision you are about to make, verify four items in-game: the monster’s eligibility, the exact gem cost, the current Master’s Challenge unlock and rewards, and the effect of the upgrade in your installed version. That check prevents a historical recommendation from becoming an expensive mistake.
