The advertised changes include HD backgrounds, redrawn portraits, added environmental sounds, upgraded battle effects, auto-save, battle fast-forward and a conversation log. It is a remaster of the two games—not a newly written sequel.
What changed visually?
Konami describes a presentation update built around the games’ pixel art rather than replacing it. Its official feature descriptions say backgrounds have been upgraded to HD, with lighting, clouds and animated shadows enhancing environments. Effects and scene direction were also revised. Nintendo’s official listing likewise describes HD backgrounds and updated effects over pixel animation. These are the publisher’s descriptions; they are not an independent, controlled comparison of the original and remastered assets.

Character portraits
Konami says all character portraits were updated in HD. For Suikoden I, original character designer Junko Kawano redrew the portraits. That specific statement applies to the first game; the announcement does not attribute the Suikoden II portrait work to her.
What changed in the audio?
The remaster adds environmental sound effects that Konami says were absent from the original, including running water, wind, insects and footsteps. Battle sound effects have also been upgraded to HD, according to Konami and Nintendo. These claims concern sound effects: the official materials cited here do not say the soundtrack was newly composed or remixed.
#1 Best Overall
- Features of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars
- All background illustrations have been upgraded to HD & updated effects breath new life into pixel art
- New environmental sounds effects to immerse yourself in this fantasy world
- Battle SFX are also now HD and add a new level of realism
- Newly added Auto-Save, Battle Fast Forward, and Conversation Log
What new convenience features are included?
Konami’s and Nintendo’s feature descriptions list a conversation log, auto-save and battle fast-forward. Konami also describes double-speed battles and auto-battle. These additions can make it easier to revisit dialogue or move through routine encounters, but the published feature lists do not establish that every option works identically in both games or on every platform.
Is the story different?
Konami says the remaster aims to preserve the original stories and the charm of the characters. Suikoden I follows a rebellion against a declining empire and the gathering of the 108 Stars of Destiny. Suikoden II follows the hero and Jowy during the conflict between the Highland Kingdom and the City-States of Jowston. The collection brings both games together; it is not a new sequel.

The official descriptions do not provide a line-by-line comparison of scripts or localizations. They support Konami’s stated aim to retain the stories, but do not establish that every line, translation or event is unchanged.
