There is no defensible universal throughput winner between Sui and Solana. The better choice depends on how your application models state, how often transactions contend for the same data, how it composes instructions, and how much operational work you can support in production. Sui’s object model can parallelize transactions that touch independent objects; Solana’s account-and-program model gives explicit control over the accounts each instruction reads or writes and lets several instructions execute atomically. Neither design, nor either network’s published figures, substitutes for a matched test using your workload.
The decision in one view
Choose Sui when your high-volume paths naturally operate on many independent, owned objects and you can model storage creation, mutation, deletion, gas budgets, and epoch-based gas prices explicitly. Choose Solana when your application benefits from composing several account operations into one atomic transaction and your team is prepared to manage compute limits, priority fees, transaction landing, retries, confirmation, and RPC capacity.

For either chain, benchmark the same transaction mix, state distribution, geographic regions, concurrency, failure rate, and confirmation target. The official material reviewed for this comparison does not provide a current, independently measured, apples-to-apples Sui-versus-Solana benchmark for throughput, latency, or total application cost. Treat Solana’s published speed and fee figures as Solana documentation claims, not as comparative measurements.
How the two execution models differ
Sui: objects and parallel access
Sui is a Layer 1 network with delegated proof-of-stake, its own consensus and validation, and an object-based state model. Objects carry type, ownership, and reference information. Sui documentation describes independent-object transactions as capable of parallel processing. The practical question for an application is therefore not simply “How many transactions per second does Sui handle?” but “How often do my transactions touch independent objects, and how often do they touch shared objects that require coordinated handling?”

A marketplace, game, or asset system might assign each position, inventory item, or user-owned record to a separate object. That arrangement can expose parallel work. A global counter, shared order book, or single mutable configuration object can become a coordination hotspot. The protocol description does not guarantee a particular throughput for either pattern; your data model determines how much of the available parallelism your workload can use.
Sui’s gas design also follows the object lifecycle. A transaction can incur costs for computation and for storing data. Deleting previously stored objects may produce a storage rebate, so net cost depends on what the transaction creates, changes, and removes rather than only on instructions executed.
Solana: accounts, programs, and atomic instruction composition
Solana stores mutable state in accounts and executes programs over the accounts passed into each instruction. Instructions declare the accounts they access, and a transaction can compose multiple instructions. All instructions in that transaction succeed together or the transaction’s state changes revert.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →This model makes transaction shape a first-class design constraint. A transaction that creates a user record, debits a balance, updates an order, and emits an event can be atomic if it fits the network’s transaction and account limits. The same composition can also increase the number of accounts, signatures, serialized bytes, and compute units that must be budgeted. A high-throughput design should measure its real instruction bundles rather than assume that fewer submitted transactions always means lower cost or higher capacity.

Why the models are not a benchmark
Object parallelism and explicit account access are architectural properties, not measured results for your product. Two applications with the same nominal transaction rate can place very different loads on consensus, execution, storage, and RPC infrastructure. Compare state contention, transaction composition, failure and retry behavior, and confirmation requirements with identical workload traces on both networks.
Performance: what is established and what is not
The available official documentation supports a design analysis, not a current performance ranking. It does not establish a matched Sui-versus-Solana winner for throughput or latency. Solana’s payments documentation currently states “~400 ms settlement” and “Median fee ~$0.001 per transaction.” Those are vendor-published figures whose conditions and market assumptions are not a direct benchmark against Sui. Do not use them as a promise for every region, transaction type, or congestion level.
| Performance question | Sui implication | Solana implication | What you must measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| State contention | Independent objects may be processed in parallel; shared objects need coordinated handling. | Instructions declare account access; overlapping writable accounts constrain practical concurrency. | Throughput and confirmation latency as the percentage of shared or overlapping writes rises. |
| Transaction composition | Measure the object references and operations in each programmable transaction. | Several instructions can execute atomically, subject to transaction size, account, and compute limits. | Bytes, accounts, signatures, compute, and success rate per representative transaction. |
| Landing under load | Test submission, consensus progress, retries, and finality with your clients and regions. | Test prioritization, blockhash expiry, retries, confirmation, and RPC behavior. | Time from submission to inclusion and final confirmation, plus duplicate or expired submissions. |
| Published speed claims | No comparable current figure is established in the reviewed material. | Payments documentation claims approximately 400 ms settlement. | Independent measurements using the same workload and observation method. |
Fee mechanics and total cost
Sui gas: computation, storage, and rebates
Sui documentation states: “A unique feature of the Sui gas price mechanism is that users pay separate fees for transaction execution and for storing the data associated with each transaction.” Total gas therefore has at least two dimensions: the computation performed and the storage created or changed.
- Gas price: Validators establish a reference gas price at epoch boundaries using validator survey signals. The applicable epoch price belongs in your cost model; it is not a permanently fixed constant.
- Gas budget: Transactions require a gas budget. Budgeting too low can prevent execution; budgeting behavior and the final work performed should be tracked separately in cost analytics.
- Storage lifecycle: Object creation and mutation add storage-related cost. Deleting previously stored objects can generate a storage rebate, reducing net fees.
- Application accounting: Attribute cost to object creation, updates, deletion, computation, and failed attempts so that a quoted “transaction fee” does not hide lifecycle effects.
For an app with long-lived objects, the storage component may dominate economics differently than for an app that creates and deletes short-lived records. Model both gross charges and rebates under realistic retention periods.

Solana: signature fee plus optional priority fee
Solana’s official fee documentation gives a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature. A transaction can also pay a priority fee. For legacy and version-0 transactions, the documented calculation uses the compute-unit price multiplied by the requested compute-unit limit, rounded to lamports.
The requested limit matters even when execution uses less compute: setting it unnecessarily high can waste priority-fee budget. Estimate compute from representative transactions, apply a safety margin, and revise the limit as program code changes. Fees are charged whether a transaction succeeds or fails, so retries and failed submissions are direct operating costs rather than free experiments.
| Cost driver | Sui | Solana |
|---|---|---|
| Base mechanism | Separate computation and storage charges. | 5,000 lamports per signature. |
| Congestion or prioritization | Reference gas price set by validators at epoch boundaries. | Optional priority fee based on compute-unit price and requested compute-unit limit for legacy and v0 transactions. |
| Data lifecycle | Storage charges; deletion can produce a rebate. | Account and instruction requirements affect transaction size and compute; no equivalent Sui-style storage rebate is established here. |
| Failure cost | Include gas used and budget behavior in your measurements. | Fees are charged for failed transactions as well as successful ones. |
| Published reference | No single comparable median fee is established in the reviewed material. | Payments documentation says “Median fee ~$0.001 per transaction,” a Solana-published estimate that varies with transaction contents, congestion, token-account creation, and market conditions. |
Transaction design constraints to test
On Sui
- Identify which objects are owned, shared, created, mutated, or deleted on every hot path.
- Quantify the percentage of transactions that touch shared objects and the queueing or coordination they introduce.
- Record computation, storage created, storage deleted, gas budget, reference gas price, and rebate separately.
- Test object-version conflicts and retry behavior, especially when many workers target the same shared state.
On Solana
- List every account read and written by each instruction, including accounts created for users or tokens.
- Measure serialized transaction size, account count, signatures, and compute-unit consumption against the documented limits relevant to your transaction version.
- Use atomic composition where rollback is required, but verify that larger bundles do not reduce landing probability or exceed compute limits.
- Set compute-unit limits from measurements, then add a documented margin instead of using an arbitrarily large request.
Production operations are part of performance
Solana operational checklist
Solana’s production guidance warns that public RPC endpoints are rate-limited and carry no service-level agreement. A production deployment therefore needs an endpoint strategy, not just a working development URL.
- Submission: Select RPC capacity for your peak request rate and geographic users; test sustained load and burst behavior.
- Fee estimation: Feed recent congestion and workload data into priority-fee decisions. Official examples discuss APIs from providers such as Helius, QuickNode, and Triton; verify their current terms, regions, limits, and reliability before adopting any service.
- Retries: Make retries idempotent, track blockhash expiry, and distinguish “not yet confirmed” from “definitely failed.” Blind resubmission can duplicate application intent or waste fees.
- Confirmation: Define which commitment level your product needs and measure the time from submission through that state.
- Monitoring: Alert on landing rate, compute-unit usage, priority-fee spend, expired transactions, RPC latency, and confirmation lag.
Sui operational checklist
- Monitor reference gas price changes at epoch boundaries and update cost projections accordingly.
- Track gas budget, computation, storage charges, deletion rebates, and object-version or shared-state failures.
- Instrument transaction submission, retry, and finality times by region and workload type.
- Load-test shared-object hotspots separately from independent-object flows; aggregate throughput can conceal a bottleneck in one critical object.
The available documentation supports these Sui design and cost considerations but does not establish a complete, comparable inventory of Sui infrastructure providers or a measured developer-experience winner.

Fee sponsorship and user experience
End users do not necessarily need to hold the native token if your application sponsors fees, but sponsorship changes your security and accounting model. Solana’s payments guidance describes a designated fee payer and the operational responsibilities of a production fee-abstraction system. Decide who authorizes sponsored actions, how replay or abuse is prevented, how limits are enforced, and how the sponsor reconciles failed transactions.
Apply the same questions to a Sui design: identify the gas-paying account, authorize the user’s intent, cap exposure, and reconcile computation, storage, and rebates. Compare sponsorship by user journey and fraud risk rather than by nominal chain fee alone.
Run a matched benchmark before committing
- Freeze the workload: Write a trace containing reads, writes, object or account creation, deletions, instruction bundles, payload sizes, user concurrency, and geographic submission regions.
- Implement equivalent semantics: Preserve business rules and atomicity. Do not give one chain a simpler transaction merely to improve its score.
- Define success: Set targets for accepted submissions, final confirmation, p95 and p99 latency, failed or expired transactions, and cost per successful business operation.
- Warm realistic state: Populate the same number of users, assets, balances, and hot records. Include both independent traffic and the shared-state contention your production design expects.
- Measure fees correctly: On Sui, record computation, storage, rebates, gas budget, and epoch price. On Solana, record signatures, requested and consumed compute units, compute-unit price, priority fee, and failed-transaction charges.
- Stress delivery: Use production-like RPC capacity, retries, confirmation polling, and regional placement. Record endpoint throttling and outages instead of hiding them with unlimited client retries.
- Repeat across conditions: Run quiet, normal, burst, and congested scenarios. Repeat after code or protocol-parameter changes.
- Make a workload-specific decision: Select the network that meets your latency, reliability, security, and cost targets with an operational plan your team can sustain.
Common failure modes and fixes
Using headline TPS as an architecture decision
Symptom: A test cites theoretical or marketing capacity but says nothing about shared-state conflicts, transaction size, retries, or confirmation. Fix: Re-run with your actual state graph and report successful business operations per second, not only submitted transactions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOver-requesting Solana compute
Symptom: Priority-fee spend is high even though measured compute usage is modest. Fix: Lower the requested compute-unit limit to a measured value plus a controlled margin, then monitor failures after each program release.
Ignoring Sui storage economics
Symptom: A per-call estimate looks cheap until object creation accumulates. Fix: Model retention, mutation frequency, deletion timing, rebates, and epoch gas-price changes over the full data lifecycle.
Best Value
Treating failed transactions as free
Symptom: The budget includes only successful calls. Fix: Include failed-attempt fees, retries, expired submissions, and contention-induced replays in cost per completed business operation.
Relying on public RPC in production
Symptom: A prototype works, then rate limits and missing service guarantees appear at launch. Fix: Contract and test suitable RPC capacity, maintain fallback behavior, and set alerts for throttling and confirmation lag.
Which applications tend to fit each model?
Sui is a strong candidate when
- Your data naturally decomposes into many independently owned or referenced objects.
- Shared-state hotspots are rare or can be partitioned.
- Storage creation and deletion are meaningful parts of the business lifecycle, making rebates relevant to accounting.
- Your team is comfortable making gas budgets and epoch-based reference prices visible in operations.
Solana is a strong candidate when
- Several state transitions must succeed or revert together in one atomic transaction.
- Your engineers can explicitly manage account lists, transaction size, compute limits, priority fees, and confirmation semantics.
- You are prepared to invest in RPC reliability, fee estimation, retries, and monitoring from the beginning.
- Fee sponsorship or a designated fee payer is central to the user experience and can be secured operationally.
Neither is automatically the right answer when
- Your workload is dominated by one globally shared counter, order book, or queue that serializes execution.
- Your business cannot tolerate variable confirmation or failed-attempt costs but has no budget for delivery and monitoring infrastructure.
- You have not defined what “throughput” means for the product: submitted transactions, finalized transactions, or completed user actions.
Bottom-line decision rule
Start with the state graph, not the chain’s headline number. If independent objects dominate, Sui’s documented parallel-execution model and storage-aware gas accounting deserve a serious evaluation. If atomic multi-instruction workflows and explicit account access dominate, Solana’s model may fit, provided you budget compute correctly and operate reliable transaction delivery. In both cases, commit only after a matched benchmark reports finality latency, successful business operations, failed-attempt cost, contention behavior, and infrastructure requirements under your intended load.
